Someone from this site; can't quite remember who it was but he posted a link with his restoration to the ngw site. I've tried searching but can't find it.
I've had an '81 GL1100 stored away for the last 3 years. It's a good runner. I've done all the basic mechanical restoration required and want to strip it of all the fairings. |

Yes! That's it, thanks. I figure if there is one to follow, it's that one. |

I sold that one and unfortunately my wife hated that I did she liked that one a lot. Here is the build on the Naked GL site:

Tdem, I was thinking about you when I read this thread and was wondering how you were coming along in the project. Start a thread with lots of pictures! |

I can't promise it'll be anything near as beautiful as Nunzio's, but it will get a fresh paint job and some modern and performance upgrades. Pistons, cams, USD forks, spoked wheels with modern brakes, GPS speedo, ignition, delkivic exhaust, etc. I'd be interested in that supercharger if there was a kit made, but sounds like it was a one-off.
I've been reading the GL forums for a year now, and i have a long list of things to get into. It'll be a several year project, but it sits as of now, waiting for the vapor blaster. |

Can't wait to see it finished. Have fun, these are cool bikes. Put a hydraulic clutch on, it make a big difference on how it performs and is easier on the arms. |

The one improvement that only a few have done is the brakes. It should be first on the list but, usually gets ignored,
The GL1000 has some of the worst, stock braking system that I've ever seen on any liter bike and ANY improvement will make a safer riding experience.
Go fast, stop fast is my motto. |

I agree. I put EBC rotors, EBC V semi-metallic (aka semi-sinitered) with stainless steel brake lines. Also replaced master cylinder with 5/8" and the bike stops on a dime! Incredible vast improvement over stock. |

Love that NGW with brembo calipers and floaters just above. Any of the GL's shown above, for that matter.
I picked up a pristine, bone stock '77 GL1000 with 6K miles on the clock a while back. It's down right now getting a complete brake re-build as the fluid looked to be also original and reached full saturation point with moisture absorption. Looks like congealed bacon grease inside the calipers and master cylinder, and they hang up at the most inoportune times.
In the interim of a full project like the brembos example, I was wondering if any of the more-modern stock Honda dual-piston calipers would fit the fork mounting lugs - like those seen on the 900F bikes as an example.
Anybody know of a Honda caliper upgrade that would bolt-on for the '77 GL1000 series forks? Something readily available on FleaBay?

Swapping the dual piston calipers from our F"s over to 78 and 79 GL's is a simple job - I did it on my 78.
I believe that the mounting holes on the 77 forks line up with the newer caliper brackets, but with the spoked wheels, some other modifications are needed as well. I know it's been done and I think it's written up on the NGW site, so it's worth doing a search over there. |

Nice NGW!
Thanks for the advice on the caliper upgrade from the F bikes. I'm going to check that out forthwith. I figured some of the existing calipers would fit the mounting boss pattern. Honda doesn't reinvent the wheel everytime they put out a different bike. Now that I know there are other references to stable mate GL's floating around here I'll have to search for additional posts. Didn't really expect to see any GL's posted here but makes sense there would be at least a few floating around.
Cool bikes come in many flavors and tend to run in familiar circles. After all, it's all about diversity these days, right? Isn't that what they mean by that? Maybe I'm just old and get confused easily.
That is a fine example of the species you have there in the photo with the F bike caliper upgrade. You have done an admirable job on that.
I'm inspired, again.

I actually used the single piston ones off my CB750F and used a CBR600 Master, and It was way better than squeezing a wood block feel with the stock GL1000.
The key with riding the GL fast is to just keep a good pace and roll on that rheostat power. The GL with a good suspension handles real well, all the weight is down low. |
