It Has Been Fun - Sold my 1100F

Ten years ago I bought my 1100F to keep my 1983 CBX company in the garage. In that time I've only ridden it 1,400 miles and sold it with 8,750 on the odometer. Always enjoyed it and it NEVER let me down. One of the reasons is that my brother, CBX-tras, kept watch over it for me.

About a year ago, my wife told me she would like to see that bike gone when I turned 70 a certain age. I was born in December (Christmas day) so I thought I would have another summer to ride it. However, the day after my birthday she asked why the bike wasn't sold yet. I told her I thought she meant before my NEXT birthday, NOT the day after my birthday. Anyway, I decided it was time to go and I had already sold my CBX 4 years ago.

During the sales process I was looking at Craig's List, eBay and other sources to an appropriate asking price. While doing that, I came across an ad for a 2007 CB919 Hornet with only 3,300 miles on it, dead stock and at a good price. JR and I went over to look at it, I took it for a test drive and we shook hands on a deal. So, I will still be riding, but at least I sold that bike.

Now the bike is sold and going to a guy in Atlanta - he seems very excited about it. Me - all I can say is I've ridden her for the last time.

I'll still stay around on this site, but probably not posting as much.

His 919 is the exact same Candy Glory Red that made the early CBX so popular. The plan is: over the winter have it two-toned in the CBX theme. Yeah, that's the ticket!

I absolutely LOVE the Hornet. I hope to have one of my own one day. The CBX paint is going to look perfect on it. That's a great idea.

One thing I've seen that I'll suggest looking into is a low-mount exhaust. I believe there are certain years of CBR that share the 919 engine and therefore have a straight swap exhaust. The couple that I've seen with this modification look fantastic. To me. And I realize it might just be me. But it's an idea.

Sorry- wrong J.R. I bought a brand new 919 Hornet in 2008 in the Candy Red; at the time I was restoring a '79 CBX and when it came time to do the paintwork I went into lengthy detail with my painter trying to decide whether the 919 Hornet red was a match to the CBX red. We came to the conclusion in the end that the 919 Hornet red was an ever so slightly darker deeper red than the CBX. Having said that if you sprayed all of the CBX bodywork with the 919 Hornet red it would take an expert with a sharp eye to pick out that the shade isn't quite right. I've attached a pic of a section of my Hornet- do you think that color matches the CBX red?

Don't be sorry. Color is subjective to different folks. Candy Glory Red is the same Honda color code on both bikes.

Your '79 most certainly has faded over the years. Case in point: you can take almost ANY red CB1100F that has the original paint, remove either side cover and see that the red on the top of the panel is lighter than the bottom where it's curved under slightly. The earlier paints didn't have the UV protection that today's materials do.
If you want to talk paint matching, bring it. It was my job for 15 years to make certain that the colors the parts my company sprayed, matched perfectly to the OEM we were providing. Including M-B and BMW.

I'm not wrong, you were trying to match ~28 year old (at the time) paint to fresh. Not going to happen.

Edit: BTW, the OEMs can't get it right either. I recall that one plant was spraying solvent borne while another plant, building the identical vehicle in another part of the country was spraying water borne. They couldn't get the 2 plants to match. My company (with the blessing of the customer) had to blend special mixes of all the colors to compromise the two plants since there was no way to tell where the finished parts were going to be shipped to. Same color code, different result. And no one ever complained.....

Roger, Congrats on the new ride! Your red 11F was museum quality and a true collector piece with the low miles. I bought my blue 11F in the spring of '08 and have put on almost 60K kms.
I still get people asking me if it is a 'new' bike!! I also get...'when are you going to sell that thing'?!
Your Hornet is a beauty too, low miles and not EF'd with!!
