So I finally got to kick off my new shop project that I have been planning for a year. It is basically a 3 car garage, one bay for my car, one for my bikes and the third as shop space.
I used to have a car port here but my neighbor helped me take it down and scrap the steel. The orange string and posts make out the 700sq ft of garage the city allowed me.
The guys who came to take out the asphalt and dig the footings rolled up in a new aluminum F250. Kind of poetic I thought as this and the F150 project helped fund this little activity.
And so the work begins.
City code is 4 foot deep footings.
Then filled with cement
Then a couple of layers of block and leveled off the surface. Note the wood forms in the back corner.
Those forms were set over a hollowed out area on 4” of concrete.
Then the rest of the 4” thick floor was poured.
Finishing touches.
Once the floor is cured the forms will be pulled out and I will have two nice recesses ready for my flush mounted car lift. Two plates that rise up under the sills to get the wheels about a foot off the ground. Easy oil change, tire rotation, brake jobs etc.
The floor in the original two car attached garage was also collapsing so we had that broken out and re-poured at the same time. This will be for my wife’s car and yard stuff once done.
The lumber for the garage Has been delivered and they start to put that up on Thursday. This has all come together so quickly and I am really buzzed about it. Once the walls and roof are up and its weather proof I will take on wiring, insulation and drywall myself. Yes I plan to heat and cool it. |

Wow, Nick, that's going to be so sweet! You can never have too much garage space! Keep posting pictures as it progresses. I love seeing these go up.
Am I a contributor to this project since I bought a new aluminum F150?

Tom S, yes we moved about 3 years ago to Farmington and 14 mile. Have 2 acres now and this garage was on my mind when we bought the place.
The green barn in the background currently has my bikes in it. Not sure what we would have done without that.
I will be sure to post more pics as soon as it progresses further.
And Tom K, yes thanks for buying an aluminum F150. Every little helped. |

Got home from work today to find the walls up. Trusses go up tomorrow and it should have shingles on by end of Saturday.

Not as much progress in the last couple of days as hoped for. The weather has been a little uncooperative. However we have the roof well underway. Shingles should be going on Monday now.

The main house has shingles and we are having this built in the same style. We have matched the 12/8 roof pitch and 6" soffets also. The house will get resided the same time this garage gets done so it should all look right at the end. |

It goes up easier and faster, lasts more than a lifetime. My shop roof has a 40yr warranty on the finish alone. Can't get that from any shingle.
Cost is usually about double vs shingle, but when you consider you're only doing it once, it makes sense. |

And at a 12/8 pitch, metal would not be easy to walk on when wet. In addition, ice and snow will slide off it; tearing off gutters and causing untold damage to anything under the eaves. |

Why would you be walking around on it? And you know they make special fittings for your ice & snow problem, right?
Only reasons I can think of why people don't use metal... 1. Initial cost(not in budget) 2. Initial cost(no ROI, not a long-term investment) 3. Structure on a home roof too complicated (budget issue)
For every thing else, there's an engineered solution.
My shop roof doesn't match my house, and I don't mind. If I'm here long enough, I'll do the house roof to match the shop later.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you do inside, my shop is always evolving, it's part of the fun! |

I had a house with a standing seam metal roof and it seems like I was alway on it for some sort of maintenance. I hated it. Maybe it was because it was under 80 ft. Douglas Fir trees. In several ice storms (yeah we use to have those in Oregon) the ice slid off the roof took out the gutters. |
