Any one here retired? We've been thinking about retirement in 2012, but I would like some input.
Work is a very laid back social environment which I very much enjoy. I do most of the fabrication work which is challenging, rewarding and I love to do. Also gives me personal access to a nice machine shop for my projects. (A big plus)
So, my initial thoughts are I will not like being retired.
So a bit of input from anyone already retired.
Do you get bored? Miss the structure of a work schedule, miss working, the people, the work environment?
Any thoughts appreciated, Happy Sunday on a cold, damp wet day here in NE Indiana |

Im not retired, but I do work at home. Done it for 2 years now. I do miss some of the things you mentioned, especially the people. I do not however miss ugly, grumpy bosses. Once youre retired, you will lose track of what day of the week it is sometimes, as they all become the same. Have you given any thought to a semi retired lifestyle by perhaps working part time |

you are only as RETIRED as you choose to be ! If it is a matter of daily time structure, i've been retired for many years ! however you won't find me sitting around playing solitaire either. the gears are always turning,
just a little taller gear ! |

I am retired two years now. To me worse thing ever. You get bored fast, and spend more money.....fixing this, doing that. Not I am not saying not working 45 hours isn't nice, but working part time would be ideal. You stop meeting people and get lazy. I had planned to work into my 70's. Was an automobile parts manager for 35 years. But the bean counter came in, and I like old inventory was thrown out .... not needed anymore. And having a common sense brain and good work practices means almost nothing now days. Work as long as you can, you will be happier. Just my 2 cents. |

I retired when I was 45, 10 years ago. Then worked for a couple years to restore a couple cars for some friends. Now semi retired again. I love it get up when you wake up, go to bed when your ready. Most days I work on MY bikes or go see friends that are at work that own there business and go to lunch with them. If you have a hobby or a lot of friends you can go see and like your wife I say go for it. Tattoo |

when you need to retire is when you start repeating yourself.
you know you are getting old when it takes twice as long to rest as it did to get tired ! |

I am retiring at age 62 (18 years from now). I am counting the days until my 62nd birthday. It cannot come fast enough.
If I win the lottery, I for damn sure will never work a single day in my life again. |

I retired 4 1/2 years ago @ 53. Have had a blast since. Do a lot of traveling, messing with m'cycles, have become the househusband. Find that I actually enjoy putting together menus and getting groceries.
Someone mentioned being put into a forced retirement. I would suspect that if I had been told I had to do it, and had made no plans for my retired future I wouldn't be as content. |

That lottery thing attracks for sure Pete But if you have to work for 18 years, man make the best of it.You only get grumpy counting days, grab a bike and fresh up.If you work 40 hours in one week you have 168 hours left in the same week.

semi. I work 4 week on 4 weeks off. Who ever commented on structuring time was correct. I've started carrying a pocket note book to write things down in so i don't forget to do stuff.....it's hard to read while napping though.
My advise try to ease out a bit more, see how you like it, if you do ease out more, if not ease back in. If you do retire make sure you guard you wallet as another astute scribe suggested.
OH yea the most important thing i blew it on don't let your wife bullshit you into being the cook!! |

I have to work but I'm getting to do what I would if I was retired, which is work on bikes. So I am retired and I love it.
Just keep working and playing with bikes and I think you will be OK. |

If I only worked 40 hours a week, my whole outlook on life would be different. I work 50-60 hours a week, carry a BlackBerry and am expected to monitor it and respond to emails/cell calls at night and on weekends. I am not allowed to relax. Yes, I have one of those cushy salaried jobs. |

He just meant he'd be buying lots of porn...
I plan to retire in 2025. (Hey, I'm kind of a young'un here, at only 39) I'll be 53. However, that's just retirement from my law enforcement job, as it won't make any financial sense for me to continue to work past 25 years. (Well, if I wanted to stay an additional 9 years, it could, but I'd do better in another job...) We'll have a retirement party at the Northeast Spring Ride 2025!
I plan to keep working after retirement, probably commercial driving of some sort. But who knows? 13 years is a while to go yet.
My dad keeps busy by working with Habitat for Humanity, building homes. Gives him a schedule to structure his life, but gives him plenty of free time for things like motorcycle riding (2002 Wing), visiting grandkids, etc. (Often combining the two!) |

Why not see if you can go part time? If you are in fabrication and have some room, buy a couple used tools and do work out of your home. You could probably make a decent amount of money just making stuff for us! |

I work fly in/fly out in the mining sector here in Western Australia on an 8/6 roster;8days on & 6days off.Gives me plenty of time for riding and tinkering,so I suppose I'm semi retired.

I am "semi-retired" at 50 and I stay busy with keeping my bikes healthy. If I didn't have the bikes I would have to find something else to do ( gardening is out of the question ). I guess it depends on what you choose to take up your time.....Jebby's idea of becoming a porn star sure sounds tempting. |

I agree with MikeG. You should go part time. That way you have access to your equipment for your personal use (and maybe ours). You probably could make money machining parts for people on the side. As I get older (43) I realize that the time is more important than the money. I am just starting to reprioritize my life a little. |

I would love to go part time, unfortunately the union is iron clad rigid and will not allow part time employees. If the union allowed part time, I would jump all over it as that would be the best scenario by far and away. |

I got retired in 93,squashed the 5 lower disc's in my back! At times I find it difficult to get things done. I have plenty of things to do, Bike wrenching a lot, But I really do miss the people I worked with! every body else works so the social side is at a minimum! If I had access to the tools that I had at the machine shop and the companies that were part of the trade,
:ie: heat treaters, casting shops,Metal coating, metal suppliers,to name some. I,d spend lots of time fabricating things and probably a lot of money! Since my settlement, then it was pretty good, but the inflation especially the last 3 years has made me cut back on some things. I think trying part time would be the ticket, and it would help pay for the things you want to do,need to do, and the Inter-action with other people and the structure helps keep you young. Staying HEALTHY AND MENTALLY is #1,#2 is being able to afford life! Just some thoughts TWEEKER |
