I've got a 42 year old outboard, a 30 year old car, and a 27 year old motorcycle. Is there something wrong with me?

I've got a 1950 Johnson 7 1/2 HP in my basement that my dad bought new. We used it on the St Lawrence river and the Finger Lakes for decades. The rest of my family have moved on to Big boats with Big motors on them but I still like the smell of the 7.5. I guess I don't like sitting in an aluminum boat with wet feet anymore, though...

The hardest part about being a young guy (33) I missed so much of that cool old stuff. So many of my generation are into this new plastic garbage be it cars, boats, bikes....they dont get why I love the old muscle cars and the vintage bikes. I just look at em, smile and say......"Cuz you dont, thats why."
My first car was a 78 mustang and I spent a whole summer yankin the engine, puttin in new cams rods lifters painting the engine bay etc. etc. All my buddies and there little turbo mazdas and wanna be four bangers couldnt understand it. Well I dont have the mustang but I still got the knowledge and meantime I could retire on what they have paid others like me over the years cuz they cant even swap their own oil!!!
Keep your old stuff man and be proud of it!!!

My first vehicle for driving on the street (in 1969) was a '37 Dodge truck that my grandfather bought new. Sure wish I had it now |

I have a number of customers in and around the York area so I'm down that way every couple of weeks. One of these days I'll take the old girl down to York and swing over your way . |

That would rule!
If it's nice weather, bring a helmet for an OMT experience. |

The outboard is a 1966 Evinrude 6 hp. "Fisherman" I got it brand new from my parents for passing grade 8. I have only used it about 5 times in 42 years. The gas tank is still in the original cardboard box.
I need a small outboard to use on my dinghy but I don't have the heart to put the Evinrude in salt water so last week I went out and bought a brand new 6 hp Yamaha to use in the ocean.

Yeah, don't use your good, old stuff in the salt. Yuck!
I've got a 1962 Johnson 10 hp outboard, well used but, still runs good. Bought the old Johnson after having a series of three middle 70's vintage 7-1/2 hp Mercs stolen from our place in northern Wisconsin.
Also have two '76 outboards that serve regularly on the summer week-ends. An 85 hp Mercury and a 40 hp Evinrude. Great stuff, those old two-strokes! |

Very cool.
I am running a '77 70hp merc on my '69 16' Dixie.
Its fun, because the package is cheap to maintain, and run. So if I only use it a couple times a year, I am still happy.
To bad the transom is going on the boat. It is such a nice looking boat. Gel coat even shines. Not sure if I am up for that much work! Who knows what I would find in there. |

Old stuff does rule! I may only have a 12' alumcraft jon boat, yet I am proud to say it is powered by a 1978 7.5hp 4-stroke HONDA. Granted it has a custom paint job, it still runs like a champ! The whole set up is a bayou speckled trout and Redfish assasin. |

I get made fun of a lot for the same thing, I'm 23, my car was made in 72, my bike in 80 and my dirt bike in 79. Every vehicle I've ever owned except my 91 Thunderbird I just bought have always been older than me, I still don't have a picture of my dirt bike (79 Yamaha MX175 btw) but heres my car

I forgot about one other old thing I failed to mention. The scariest dirt bike in the world. You spoke of the front wheel just jumping of the ground on the 175. Lemme put it this way when friends or whoever happens to come over and we're in the garage they point at my 1978 PE400 and ask "what is that?" I simply reply "SCARY BRO". I'm Still young, but I consider myself a lil' bit wiser than I was when I was flipping that thing over backwards on top of myself. No real harm or injuries other than minor burns and bruised egoes plural ( my older brother got some as well). Way cool bike, but for all I care it can sit there and try and put itself back together. |

That is way cool that almost everthing you drive is older than you!! Nice 442 by the way.
I always think that anybody can go out and buy the new stuff, but how many people have a nice old car, boat, motorcycle etc.
