I do not have a centerstand on my bike(s) and I get the back wheel off the ground by using a floor jack and a jackstand. I won't describe exactly how because I don't want anyone trying this at home.

My method is probably not the safest or the smartest but it works for me and I'm careful.

How do others do it?

For my 900, I have it set up so that I install the centerstand when I need it and remove it when I don't. With a 4-1 pipe, if you install the pin from the left, you can install and remove at your will.

yes, i also use the same method solman describes, it works . but if its going to be apart or on the stand longer than an hour or two. i like to also hang it off a convienient ceiling beam ( if you have one available.) using pull or ratchet straps. sefety first. ever try to catch one of these as it tips over during a rear wheel swap? Cool

For any length time I take the seat off and strap it to my engine hoist.
Can go as high as I want.

Pep Boys has a mtorcycle lift for $49.95 Great investment and you can get both wheels safely off the ground... Laughing

The only prob with the jack, is the exhaust is in the way.
Any good tips on using one without removing the 4into1?
I am thinking about making a block of wood system to do it.

I use a 2 ea. 18"X2X3 boards laying across the lift, one on each side directly under the frame member....3" side horizantal...steady as any bike I've ever had on the lift...

Heres what i did a few days ago:

I positioned one jack stand under an appropriate point under each rearset. I put the jack stand at a good height and then offset them behind where I wanted them to end up. Then i got behind the bike, held it striaght, lifted it up, moved it back a couple inches, and set it own in the stands. presto. Took 30 seconds. Hope it didn't sound too confusing.

You should talk to Bryan (BBrandt11) - he welded up a pivoting stand that acts as a center stand without removing the 4-1 and takes about 10 seconds to setup.

Start the bike, ride 1/2 a block 'til you have a bit o' speed.

Squeeze the right lever. Twisted Evil .

Repeat as required.

Come on now. Our beasts are not that heavy. Just lift with your legs.
I only weigh in at 139 wet right now and I can lift the back.

Ya, I'm 6 foot 190 and in the worst shape of my life. Just pull the seat off and grab those frame rails!

This is a great reason not to remove the center stand! I use mine EVERY DAY. It's better for the bike to warm up not slightly leaned over anyways.

wrench the throttle back fullboar - drop the clutch whilst pulling back on the bars...this should hopefully put the bike upside down resting on the seat & handlebars Very Happy sorry about that i was inspired by the rat

but seriously i have an idea that might work - put a stand either side under your rear footpeg mounts...and make sure they are really close then carefully remove your rear shockers

this may / should allow you to lift the rear wheel off the ground then Question

If you really want to do it cheap, put a jack stand under one side of the swingarm arm, rock it towards you and put the other one under the other side
