Hey this is where I live and I can confirm that most car drivers here wouldn't know what's going on outside their windscreen.

Especially volvo drivers with cloth caps and fish stickers.

Oh I do hope there are no cloth cap wearing, fish-stickered, volvo drivers who are on this forum. If there are, .. um sorry.

1) ANYONE with oregon plates
2) handicapped plates
3) any lexus
4) any SUV
5) phone-whales
6) people running from police
7) other motorcycles lane splitting (other bikes can be just as dangerous!!)

there was an episode of mythbusters on discovery where they tested to see if cell phones where as dangrous or more so then driving drunk...

the results where cell phones made them fail more tests then drunk. But concluded that it is possible to put a cell phone down if there is trouble.

IMHO I think cell phones should be used for emergency purposes (accidents, crime, medical) or if you get lost not for carying conversation with your best buddy or your wife telling you to bring home milk.....

In some other studies cell phones were third or forth on the list of distractions while driving. Talking to a passenger or dealing with small kids was much worse.

My ultimate pet peeve, drivers who have to constantly look at their passengers while talking to them. I know it's rude not to look at someone you are talking to, but killing them is even more rude.

Just like gun control and a hundred other issues, it's not the inanimate object but the idiot holding it.

I know another way cell phones are Dangerous.
Mine was in my left brest pocket of my shirt in my leathers {thank god}
It was broke in three peices & it broke my sturnum, abunch a ribs
& punctured a lung.
So never put anything in your front pockets, you never know when
your gonna take a hard cross check from the right & do a One bank
off the pickup truck & into the corner ditch.
Funny how your always so suprised when you wake up saying

Exactly! Typical CNN surface reporting with no depth. How exactly was this study conducted? What questions were asked of crash victims? Four times as likely compared to what?

Never just take these "Studies" at their word. There have been lots of faulty tests that are reported as "news". Remember the exploding Chevy pick-ups of years ago? Or the "unintended acceleration" of Audis back in the '80's? There have been lots of others.

No doubt distractions of any kind increase risk while driving or riding. The roads are full of people who can hardly drive anyway - without distractions. What should we do? Ban radios and CD players in cars? Ban the carrying of passengers? Ban mirrors (so you can't check your makeup, hair, etc) Ban ashtrays? Ban climate controls?

Ever get stuck behind some dope who is looking everywhere but down the road, wandering over the lines at 10 mph below the speed limit? Maybe they should ban side windows so you won't be distracted by scenery?

How about some better driver training... and raising speed limits to reasonable levels so driving is brought to a level that requires focus? Most speed limits are set so low that if you drive at that speed, it is a total bore, and the mind wanders. I am amazed at how many places I can safely drive 15-20mph over the limit... AS LONG AS I PAY ATTENTION!

I had to laugh when I read number 6.. (true story, sorry 'bout the hijack);

I was heading home from work, driving a Honda Prelude. This is about 10 years ago, and I'd only had the car a couple of months (loved that car). On a busy three lane highway, I was suddenly surrounded by cop cars on either side and behind me - no flashing lights, just lots of cop cars. I continued at the same speed, while they slowed down - turns out they were doing a slow and gradual moving block to stop ALL traffic in ALL three lanes. I was the last car through the block, so I continued on - in the rear view mirror I could see that the cops had completely stopped all three lanes, but after a mile or so I thought no more about it.

After a while, I came up behind traffc that had slowed (normal 5:00 drive home traffic), so I slowed and stopped. The highway behind me was completely empty for as far as I could see, but then I see ONE car coming, being pursued by four cop cars. I sat in stunned amazement, as I watched this car get closer and closer. In the last seconds I realized (too late) that the driver wasn't stopping - he rearended my stationary car at around 70mph. He never even tried to swerve or brake Rolling Eyes

Turns out the driver was blind drunk, and had been spotted weaving through rush hour traffic. The police had attempted to box him in by stopping all of the traffic, but he had managed to break through. The police had effectively given him three or four open miles of highway in which to build up speed before he found me. The prelude was demolished - front and rear windows exploded, and neither door would open (car was folded), but I managed to get out and walk away with no injuries.

OK just how do you drive a standard transmission with a cell phone in your hand?

I have seen speaker phone type cell phones,I have no problem with that.

The massive rise in cell phone use in vehicles makes one wonder just how important job these a$$holes have that need constant comunication.

Put the damn phone down and drive,or stop and talk,most people can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

Another example of accurate statements are the above quotes.

If you ride a motorcycle ten to twenty thousand miles a year on public highways & byways in a State or Province that has enough of a population to have a fairly complete network of Cell Towers established you are going to have a painful & dangerous encounter with a driver using a hand held cell phone sooner or later. I sincerely hope you are able to survive this encounter un-crippled.

It would be wonderful if you could get on the ban hand held cell phone use whilst driving bandwagon before said encounter.

How about & RF device that broadcasts, "Shut up & drive. It is your legal responsibility!", to all or most phones with 100 meters. Of course you would need an on-off switch so as to be able to use it only when threatened & to avoid detection directional finders.
