I'm sure that most of you know that Nicky Hayden won the first ever Moto GP race in the States on a Honda. Not only did he win on his home turf, this was his first Moto GP win ever. The race was great. Just as cool as the race (maybe even better) was the Honda booth in the infield. They didn't have any F bikes there but they did fire up a real rc166 and rc 181. For those of you who may not know what these bikes are let me enlighten you.

Both these bikes were Gand Prix winners in the early 1960's that were ridden by the likes of Mike Hailwood. The rc166 is a six cylinder 250cc four stroke bike. Yes, that's right, 250cc's and six itsy bitsy pistons with two overhead cams and four tiny valves per cylinder. This bike idles at 8000 rpm and redlines at an earshattering 19000 rpm. All the noise comes through six open megaphones. Zero muffler action. What an amazing sound. An absolutly bone chilling wail.

The rc181 was a 500cc four cylinder twin overhead cam four valve engine that could even be considered a predecesor to our beloved F bikes. This bike also reved to some ungodly rpm and made a wonderfull noise.

Both of these bikes are much louder than the current Moto GP bikes as well as better sounding in my opinion. Keep in mind that the current bikes also run no mufflers and are about 130 decibels loud. 130 decibels, in case you don't know, is very, very loud and these two bikes were MUCH louder. Great stuff.

At anyrate, the races were great and the vintage Honda GP bikes were amazing. Oh yeah, I also got to meet Nicky Hayden at dinner late Sunday night.

What a great weekend.

That's right, forgot to mention that Colin Edwards got second, making the weekend even better with not just one, but, two Americans on the podium.

Damn near brought tears to my eyes.

Fella's;

Hee-hee, I heard 'em both live in Europe, way back when. Gotta admit that I would'a loved to make the show here though.
