Well today was a dull cold day, so plan was either paint the house, clean the garage, fix the riding mower that i wrecked knocking over the birdbath thing...but..saw my local favorite dealership had a vfr800 on trade so decided time for a ride. I am on the hunt for a modernererrr?? bike to replace my f's as I dont need to totally wear them out as I plan a lot of long trips in the future..so anyway... Cool bike..almost comfortable for me, but still too much forward pressure on the arms and it even had the heli bars..I think i could easily enjoy it for the short runs, but not for my 500 mile days...power was nice...thing motored and no problem carrying the front end a foot for a few gears..very predictable wheelies..I like !
Thing makes a different sound than any straight 4 I have ridden, kinda a weird cross between mine and a vtwin..just weird, but nice..I like it too. As for cornering..wow..beyond my capabilities at the moment as i only rode it 60 miles , but sure made the old f feel like a sack of spuds!
I think this would be a good compromise between a full on sportbike and a naked bike...but I knew it was tooo sportbike for me as I felt wayyyy better hoping back on the f...other than wallowing around the corners I just did on the vfr...OH well...still lookin....But they are getting a zrx1200 in on monday so will be back to try it out...then got a ride on a vstrom lined up, so will see how the hunt goes...

Then gonna try the fj1300 and the st1300 as thats as bulky as i want to go....

But looking like will take the old f's on the 2 week mtn trip again this summer as #$^# things just work to good for the tour!

Anyway...Ive tried the bandit, the vfr, a the yammy 1000, waiting for the zrx and the vstrom..
No triumh dealers around here so they are out., anything else close to the f posioning to recomend??

crap..going to paint now....

You might want to check out the Yamaha fz1. Its a naked bike, sit up style ( easy on the arms ) quite comfortable to ride and has lots of ZIP!!! based on the R1 motor. handles nicer than a zrx, little more power too. good to tour with and great around town.

Haha...NO traitor!!!!...I am still keeping my old girls!! I am actually just gonna be nice to them and not wear them out any faster as I expect to do a very lot of riding in a few years, as in ALL summer!!! and as good as they are theycan wear out on me! so just looking for a replacement for touring semi naked. the bike not me!

Yep tried out the fz1..nice also..Smile problem is none of these have near the protection my f does when i put on my trip plastic deflectors, and these new bikes have the usueless baby fairings and they are in the way and I dont wanna have to remodel them..so either a naked with just a headlight,so i can put plastic on it for the trips, or i will go with something with a bigger fairing..

I amlooking forward to my vstrom ride and the zrx without the baby fairing.

will see.

And to be not a traitor I will be doing 2 weeks on them again this year and posting it to make sure!! Smile

The stock windshield on both the fz and zrx provide a little wind protection. the fairings do provide more or less as the 1100f's. Both bikes have great aftermarked touring wind shields that work great! My brother has a zrx and loves it ( he too is a devoted honda fan as am I ) The Fj is a big heavy sport touring winabago. What ever you get just have fun, take care.................dean.............no traitor

Kewl,

I would suggest trying a v-twin like the SuperHawk or SV1000.

If you ever go v-twin you might not ride the in-line four near as much.

I still enjoy my CB750F, but by far i like my V-Twin SuperHawk a whole lot more.

I sat on a VFR800 at the dealer and fell in love with it but didn't want to spend the $10,000. I found a slightly used one local and the guy let me take it for a ride. Like you said, a little too much pressure on the arms and too stiff at low speeds for me. I like the riding position, handling, and Cadillac like ride on my F. I don't think I could replace it.

hey Skid...I also like the wobble that my f has that keeps me from cruising at 120 mph all the time!! I could never go under 120 on the kids zx, so its GOOD the f shakes and keeps me slowed down..I gave up a while back trying to fix it, and now I am happy to leave the "speed limiter" on..I found myself slowing down to 100 mph on the vfr in the 50 mph zones..arggg.!! I would really have to learn to go slow or go broke....

as for the fj, Ive ridden them.. will blow a way my poor f, Id have one in a sec if I had the cash..and I might wait till I do as my monthly trips will be 1300 miles each way when i start.head ding west into the mountains will be fine, coming back onto the prairie I will need speed to get it over with!! Smile
so the little windscreens on those naked bikes dont do it either....they are fine for my local driving, but i like to do some long distance a lot and that dont cut it for that.
..what i use on my f's right now is fairly small, but with the lowers on its makes a perfect bubble that I havnt been able to match without going to a full fairing and I dont care for those. In fact my small plastic stuff works better than my hondaline fairing did on my last 900. So thats my problem..I like the feeling of my small screens, and it works great, so I either need a complete naked version i can use mine on, or %& it will just get me a fj or a st and go fast. I will always keep the f's for playing.....\

thumper..gonna try a vtwin..but its the 1000 vstrom as like the positioning....butt ugly tho..

naw..maybe just find me a Dneper !!! anyone got one??

Stout was there. He had his 160+ mph modern Crotch Rocket. A Kawy 900...Sold it and bought an 1100F...WHY? Shocked Mentioned in joking that his new bike was BORING after awhile!!! Just another Belly Button bike, anyone can buy off the showrrom floor. A 45 mph corner is BORING on a new bike unless you take it @ 70+. The new Rocket doesnt even sweat. Ho-hum. On an ancient F, 70 can be a basket of weavng fun. Wanna do 150? Fine. Where? Around the ton, the F is breathing a bit, letting you know its working hard for you. After a while, on the new stuff, you take corners faster and faster, pushing the limit, for the bike is neutral as sin. Not the F. Its always telling you how it feels, keeping you cautious and within your limits. The New Crotch? One day you will exceed your limits, and the neutral bike will just spit you off.....Not its fault though.......you just thought you were as good as the bike is......thats all.......and with no feedback, you just go faster & faster...until..... Just thinking outloud.......Shocked

Hey Blain; where do you come up with that stuff??????? But you know,,,, you hit the nail on the head. I can always tell when I am pushing my F a little to hard. No matter what you ride though you have to know yours and the bike you are on limits. V twins or inline fours its a choice you make. I will always go with inline 4. nothing sounds better too.

Wow, so that makes 3 of us superhawk/F owners? awesome!

The more I ride newer bikes, the more I realize just how freakishly high their limits are. the good old F keeps me in check, much more entertaining at slow speeds, and healthier for my license.

there is a good point here.....yes I am safer on my f because of the speed limiter wobbles, and the wibbles on the sharp corners, and the lack of traction with the skinny tire, and the fact I cant launch it with the goofy carbs, so yes I am safer on it because It always reminds me of its limits early and thats ok! And my kids have f"s also and after watching the kid blow by me with his zx, its nice to have him on the f! just makes me worry less.

And yes you sure gotta think more on the modern stuff because its sooo easy to get in over your head...But having to think more really doesnt hurt...biggest problem is the speeding tickets cause I cant go under 100 mph with any new bike...It would be too easy to get to jail with a fj or any other new rocket..crap..I rode my electra glide at 100 all the time too!!!.........Now that was fun passing all the sportbikers who were doing the limit!!! every time I saw a guy ahead on a bike I could never resist blasting by them on the big H, because as we all know you dont do that!! Smile
Maybe just pick up a old 900C for two upping instead and stay outa jail!!

Naaaa....out here on the prairies 100 is just a nice cruise..I want a new big one!

EXACTLY....... Maybe even higher then most peoples reaction times..... NAW!!!! Shocked

Wish Stout would post in here on why he sold his 900, but basically it was in a real high speed sweeper, leaned over to beat the band, when all of a sudden, a gust of wind pushes him over 10 feet into the other lane!!! Shocked No warning @ all.....

Sure it could happen on the ole F, but we would be going nowhere NEAR the speed he was.......and with all that weight its packing around, it prolly would take a week for it to slide lanes anyway Cool

what the f#@$ is wrong with you people?!
Its very obvious that these f's where not built to go 180mph or go knee scraping... the sport bikes of yesterday where ment to be FUN RELIABLE transportation! If your bike wobbles there is something wrong with it... plain and simple if you don't want to fix it fine and dandy....

If you want your bike to handle better then rebuild your forks have some good tires put on... put some progressive springs in there! FOR GOD SAKES replace those sad excuse for back shocks with new aftermarket ones... your bike will handle 10 times better... still not enough? lower the front end.. highten the back end... lose some weight (you or the bike) Laughing ... hell go all out and do a full CBR conversion with new meats.

If I want to ride a V twin I will go cut the grass... if I want to ride a motorcycle I ride my 900F though some twisties!

Hey razor///// I like the way you are thinking. These f's have so much potential. V twins are ok for cuttin grass, but sometimes you just gotta kick it up a notch.

I agree completely. Like I said, I just can't find anything that will replace my F... the "do it all" motorcycle.

I think your ride on the V-Strom is going to be interesting. There is some protection to be had behind that fairing. The SV...for a bike that is suposedly 'not committed' (conventional forks, de-tuned motor, etc...) that bike has a bitch of a riding position. My wrists were hurting after 30 minutes on the highway.
Too bad you don't get the ZRX1200 with the frame mounted fairing...maybe that would cover all the bases.
Oh, I have a solution: CB1100F with an 'R' conversion theme, brace the frame, graft on some inverted forks and 17s, then punch the crap outta the motor! Razz Shocked Laughing ...it's a thought. Idea Wink

Not sure badkaw about the zrx being a frame mount fairing. The 2001 and less are steering mounted. Now the FZ1 is a frame mount fairing
