Even if diluted don't leave them in to long , it will discolor them .

Perfect time to work on the garage, with a heater.

You're right Jacob. Luckily the temps helped, 50F today.

G'day fellas.
Started stripping the paint off the motor (fully dismantled). Using normal paint stripper and pressure washer. Most of my blue paint came off 1st go but the original factory black is a bit more stubborn. 3rd go now and there's still bits here and there.
Something that I didn't notice when I rebuilt the motor 10 years ago. The rear #1 cylinder stud was put in upside down by whoever was in there before me!
Cheers.

I have this oscillating tool to use with a cordless drill and use the rubber tube to grip the valve stem, makes lapping valves very easy

I painted the bottom half crankcase and sump. Used gaskets as templates for blanking plates (3mm MDF) for the clutch, oil pump and timing side cavities to keep paint off mating surfaces. Tomorrow the top half crankcase, barrels, head and side covers. Then it's wait for parts coming from all corners of the globe.
Cheers

G'day fellas.
Popped the cylinder liners out of the block.
200C for 30 minutes on the BBQ. One dropped on its own, the others helped by a Trihard 75.5 mm piston. Thought it might come in handy one day!
Waiting for parts. Still haven't found rings at the acceptable $$$
Cheers

With the help of my son I blew 15” of insulation into the attic space of my garage. That along with the just installed shop heater means my bikes can stay nice and toasty all winter. And I can continue to work on them in comfort. Just need the beer fridge now 😀

I picked up my first ever set of heated gerbring gear jacket liner pants liner windbreaker material. Gloves and the controller and wires for the bike it's used but in great condition. now winter riding is a go. Being local is one thing hitting the highway with no heated gloves at least is a bitch in ny weather even with 2 gloves on.

It'd be a good idea to pick up one of PGSmick's ammeter and voltmeter gadgets as well if you're doing that heated gear. Big drain on the charging system can mean bad things for the components as they are not meant for touring accessories. Just a friendly piece of advice from experience Wink

Decided i'd take the time and clean up the set of forks and wheels from a 93 CBR600 F2. They'll be going on a project of mine but were in pretty tired looking shape when I got em. Once I got the dirt and crap off them and got the dust seals off (which were cracked) I saw that it was time for a full refurb. The seals were deformed from rust corrosion and so were the spring clips and everything in there. The fluid I drained was pretty horrible too, mostly a silverish translucent green clouded up and stinky. YAY!
So I ordered new seals and fluid and cleaned up the internals and exterior. This week I'll scuff the lowers, clean, and paint with a suitable satin black.
The wheels cleaned up well with some grease remover and they're apparently poweder coated white, which I thought was paint. I might leave them white and see how it looks on a silver 900F?

brutalcafe, take a read here http://www.cb1100f.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=84654&highlight=charging+system+output+amps

The charging system can only put out 20 Amps max and the bike takes 9 Amps to run with the headlight and driving/tail lights on. That's what I was referring to when I said be careful of the heated gear.
I just stop riding when winter hits so heated gear is not necessary!

Gotcha . i have led turn signals front and back and my headlight is also led .your winter is a bit harsher than mine.it's nice out just cold .plus i have the fever lol yup i said it lol

The heating system says 15amp max output but it only really goes up to about 11 or 12. The headlight is only using 6w but I'm going to change it for a 50W its only 1400 lumens. And last night on the unlighted part of the hw wasnt fun. Lets say with my new headlight if i can't run the heat system what alternative do i have ? Adding a 12v 15amp battery to the system and run the heat off that battery?

Snowmobile clothing? When you get home it's probably mandatory as well to put the battery on a battery tender after the ride to insure a full charge and a healthy battery over time...The charging system on this bike is only designed to run the bike with a fully charged battery to start with....Not to charge a partially discharged battery ..so you are on thin ice if you are running heated gear to start with. I wonder how long your rotor and stator will last...

Very manly riding a bike in 20 degree weather., BTW..

Its gerbring heated gear. Jacket liner pants liner and gloves. Ill check my battery today i rode 30 miles stopped at a friends then rode another 30 started right up after the first 30 mile ride. Im a New Yorker man born and raised in Brooklyn 😬 ! Btw they was all highway miles @65 70 mph cruising i was the only crazy bike on the road haha ....the other night it was about 22degrees i seen 3 H.A on the h.w. lol #bikelife.

If the charging system on the bike is 20 amp max and the bike stock uses 9amps with a stock headlight running and rear lights i have a 6w headlight with led turn signals and a led brake light turn signal i can guarantee that it's not drawing no where near 9 amps not even close

I think you meant watts and not amps.

I'm not talking specific amperage draw numbers here although at the heart of it, that is the crux of the matter

I'm thinking you are drawing more amperage that the system supplies...

You realize the Honda system was made to run a fully charged battery while riding and isn't even suitable to charge a discharged battery as a regular practice...

The reliability of the rotor and stator can be horrible to start with, and once you start taxing the system with big amperage draw, I suspect reliability issues will be an issue.

If you had an ampmeter on the bike I suspect you would be discharging as you were riding with that clothing (Gerbing very Nice stuff)

If you are in the predicament of the average NYC dweller with the bike parked out doors and not tethered to a battery tender, I'm not thinking this will work out well long term.

Very manly stuff riding in those temps, but I see why NYC is loaded with Vespa's on the street, easier to get a lot of body behind some sheetmetal and out of the wind.

Good luck! Stay warm, and if not..time to subway around for a while

Im going to install a amp/volt meter. I don't park it in the street i have a driveway and yard I'm also able to hook it up to the tender after every ride that's no issue. So thanks for the headsup. I've kept the battery terminal wires connected for easy charging 👍. Vespas are easy to get around but they ain't as fun 😬

I have an upgraded stator but my rotor is still the same one.

Used heated gear is at a bargain. Almost a steal check ebay craigslist.

Most people selling is because they no longer ride so a motivated seller equals a great bargain

I put her on the battery tender👍

The heated gear is using 12.2 amps max power with jacket gloves pant liners .but right now I'm only using about 10w of led lights the headlight is 6w and the rear led bar I'm not sure

12.2 Amps is almost 150W...I think the ignition modules and systems to run the bike are taking some power too. You're on the verge, my friend. Like others have said, these old gals don't like to be taxed that far into the capacity of the charging system. Things will start to fail, due to the design never intending to use accessories.

Good luck to you Wink

Thanks for the info. The streets are filled with salt so no riding anywayz . bummer. Is there anyway to upgrade the charging system to a 30amp ? I'm not to worried i got another project coming soon that will def take my heated gear with no issues 😬 i put a 12amp fuse i used the gear at 3/4 and full power and it didn't blow the fuse. I used the gear for about 30 min parked came back a hour later and it fired up on the first click.I'm also going to double check with a multimeter to see if the battery is charging while the gear is on.👍

The heated gear is mostly for the highway it's impossible to stay warm going 60 70 mph for over 5min

Another good note is that it gets so hot that for riding in 20-30 degree weather 1/4 heat to half is all you need and you'll def will be turning it down

I put the multi meter on it to see ... At idle with the gear on half power im getting 12.7 volts at 1500 rpm shes charging at close to 14V i didn't rev much higher it's in the yard and i didn't want a neighbor complaining lol for the short commutes i don't think it should be a issue plus nothing more than halfpower is needed and then u have to lower it. Almost to off plus i can charge my battery with the tender but it charges cuz after that first ride with the gear i put the tender on it and a few minuteslater the light was green as in charged

The charging systems on these bikes don't start to charge until about 1800 rpm and reach full charging at 3000 rpm.....watch that bumper to bumper stuff with a big amperage draw..

Well f4f u said it starts to charge at 1800rpm but the bike was idiling and charging @ 14.5+ volts. When i put the gear on 3/4 power it dropped to 12.5 when i gave it some throttle just under 1500 about 1300 it was charging at 13.7 .i have a upgraded stator with accel yellow performance coils i have a extra rectifier but I'm not sure if it's the upgraded one came with the spare parts bin.ialso have a brand new yuasa battery

You have to take into consideration my ligthting system is not your oem lighting system if im drawing 10watts in power total its probably alot i have a led setup front to back my headlight is only drawing 6W. My turn signals are builtin the headlight and my rear led bar with the turn signals in the light bar is a few watts at that the headlight is drawing the most 6watts lol the stock system headlight alone was 55w probably another 55w in running lights tail lights ill be at 35watts max lighting with my new bulb

Been trying to rescue a '79 750F that was seriously abused last century, then left setting in the East Tennessee weather since about 1999 (last it was tagged). I've cleaned the fuel tank (luckily last run on non-alcohol gas), checked and adjusted valves, changed the front end (someone had put Kaw leading axle forks on it yielding a trail of ~3") to GL1000 front, corrected brakes, replaced wheel bearings, cleaned electrical connectors, cleaned the commutator (yech, that was bad!), yadayada. Doing nothing for appearance as I'll leave it a rat bike. Rebuilt the carbs (I've done several GL1000 carb rebuilds, and these are quite similar). She fires up and idles, but #1 cylinder hasn't joined the team. Carbs just remounted for the third time. I've swapped coils (#4 pipe isn't getting as warm as 2 or 3 either, but 1 stays cold) with no change. Ne plugs, wires, and caps. Building an aux fuel cell this weekend so I can attempt a balance (not going to do much good until #1 kicks in). Compresdion is 125, 125, 120, 125 psi. I'm sure that will improve once it can be ridden. No serious leaks so far. Charging system keeps ~13.2 at idle and ~14.2 when reved. Still needs a new chain and tires, but they will come once its running right.

Tried to join here last month, but found the Comcast spam blocker trashed the admin email.

I'mm pidfling with bikes as a retirement passtime. I normally ride a GL1800 and hope to do some grand touring on it soon. Also have a cafe-styled '78 GL1000 with '75 engine that I show some.
