Photobucket ransom fix

Found this on another forum I'm on:

"If you're using Google Chrome, go to the three dots on the right side of the screen and click them. A drop down should appear. Hover your mouse over "More Tools," and when the next drop down appears, click on extensions. Go to the link towards the bottom that says "Get more extensions." In the search box, type "Photobucket Fix," and hit enter. Click the install button and once it's done, you should be able to see photobucket pictures again.

For FireFox users, click on the three bars on the right side of the screen, then click on add ons. Click search for "photobucket hotlink" and click install. Same result."

Installed on both Chrome and Firefox on my Mac, and both work perfectly. Not sure how long until they catch on, but works for now.

I may try that. When this all began, I went to Flickr. I used an old Yahoo email to log in. Somehow, Yahoo did something and now my old email address works, but I can't remember the password. No way to contact Flickr to see if I can get some things reset. I would have to upload everything again to a new Flickr account. What a pain! They're sort of clunky anyway, and I always liked PB.

Appears this fix works for now......Great tip......maybe some guys that posted tech how to's will try it to restore "F" tech archives?

Personally, I've bitten the bullet and begun the laborious process of transferring all my Photobucket photos to Dropbox (that phase is completed) and am now going through all my posts changing the links (about 1/5 of the way through). Once I know it's all working, I'll cancel my Photobucket account with a nastygram.

I sure as HELL hope that Dropbox doesn't someday take Photobucket's lead on this, but there are no guarantees, I guess.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to search for posts WITH PHOTOS? I can search for all my posts, but I get every thread I have ever posted to, not just those with photos in them. So I have to re-read all my past BS to find the photos. Actually, that's not a Totally Terrible Thing as it offers a nice trip down memory lane. Still, to get the job done, it would be nice to be able to search for HTML tags and Author, but I don't see any way to do that.

Not to be self-righteous about it, but some threads/posts really flop without photos and if your important posts have broken links because of this PB bullshit, would you please consider some way of fixing them? Believe me, I know what a PITA this is, so Huge Thanks.

The only universal fix is to move them and repost them some where else, I suppose they could break that browser workaround if they wanted to.

They all work for me using the fix. I realise it's only a temporary solution and more than likely PB will act to block this one day, but for now it works. I haven't used PB for hosting for years, and frankly I can't remember all of the posts I did use it for. Not sure I'll ever get back to edit them unless I get a request.

When I came back after going to eat, the picture wasn't there I know I had downloaded the add-on. I did it again and restarted FireFox, and there it was. What a pain!

So what is the lesson? Photobucket screwed millions of people and billions of pictures/links. Screw them. Stop trying to work to use their shit and move on. Bastards they are.

Well that's kinda why I posted this. Rather than comply with their demands, I can still view the images they no longer want us to see without extorting money from the individual posters. Screw them.

SteveG, I think the web extension is just a temporary workaround. Migrate any pictures from Photobucket to something else is the answer.

I tried Dropbox and it wouldn’t let me do anything unless I paid for and upgrade

If you can log in you should be all set, the free 3GB account (or whatever size they are now) is fine. Create/find the Dropbox directory on your PC/Mac, create a subdirectory cb1100f.net, then you can organize your forum photos in there.

Get to that point, let me know if you have a Mac or a PC and I’ll walk you through the process of getting your first forum picture posted.

I have been using Flickr with good results but they have just been acquired by a larger company Smugmug.
Wouldn't be surprised if big changes are coming as well.
