A few weeks ago, I tried to use the fiche at my once favorite ServiceHonda website only to find it down. I tried again today and could not find any bikes earlier than 1980 and could not find the CB1100F. The site is under new ownership and explains that:

"The old microfiche progam Service Honda used was very expensive and charged Service Honda each time there was a click (even if nobody purchased products). The links below take you to a more affordable parts diagram program that will enable you to locate what you need, and allow us to continue to offer great pricing and excellent service."

I decided to chat with a rep and had the following conversation:

I can no longer find my bike in your "new, improved" system. Can you help? 1983 Honda CB1100F
Wes has joined the chat.
Peter (10:34:03) : Hi Wes.
Wes (10:35:20) : Hello I assume you are looking at www.servicehonda.com correct?
Peter (10:34:51) : Yes.
Wes (10:37:41) : Service Honda went out of business last september and we bought their website. The company we use for micro fiche doesn't have that model listed unfortunately. The easiest thing would be to call in and we would be happy to place a phone order for you.
Peter (10:37:57) : Do you have a list of other World of Powersports outlets that use the same system so that I don't have to waste time trying to find the fiches?
Wes (10:40:07) : No all of our sites use the same company to list the micro fiche.
Peter (10:40:09) : I understand that, but I need a list of "all your sites" so that I can avoid them for this bike.
Wes (10:41:53) : www.worldofpowersports.com is our only other retail site.
Peter (10:42:50) : OK, Thanks. It's too bad. I would much prefer to pay slightly higher prices for service and parts than to pay lower prices (or in this case no prices) for no service.
Wes (10:45:31) : We may still have access to look up older parts for you. It is just not listed online. If you have a list of parts you are looking for you may call in, or e-mail using our contact link online and we can look into that for you.
Wes (10:47:19) : Did you have some parts we can look into for you?
Peter (10:47:57) : The thing is, the fiche system is a fantastic reference source for more than just purchasing parts. It is good for assembly help, for determining which parts can be used on other bikes and so on. I would gladly pay a portion of a subscription along with hundreds of other customers to have access to such a resource. If the old way is partly what drove Service Honda under, then they perhaps erred by not offering access on a subscription basis.
Peter (10:49:04) : So, the only parts I am thinking about right now, actually, is float valves for a 1979 Honda CB750F. Are they available and at what cost?
Wes (10:53:05) : Honda shows the float valve set as available. It retails for $25.91 each.
Peter (10:53:0Cool : What's in the set besides the float valve, can you tell?
Peter (10:53:5Cool : And do you have a part number for that?
Wes (10:57:17) : Looks like two pieces. It is the float valve and an oring, or clip it is hard to tell.
Peter (10:57:04) : OK, probably a small spring clip. Part number?
Wes (10:59:14) : Sorry, but we don't give that out, but can place the order for you if you would like to call in and speak with our parts department. 217-423-6521, or 1800-407-7218.
Peter (10:58:57) : Wow. Thanks for your time.

Lost a useful resource there. I wonder if other sites like BeaverDam Powersports are charged per click as well.

Peter

Try www.partzilla.com

Use them often and costs are reasonable.

Scary stuff as time goes by and parts and resources disappear. The fiche's are still available to view at bikebandit.com and also partzilla.com.

Thanks, I have used them in the past and will resume now.

I just hate the dishonesty of a company making a change to help their bottom line and spinning it like they're doing it for the benefit of the customer when the actual result is a loss of usefulness.

I use Partzilla all the time. They do not cover off any models specific to the Canadian market but I can deal with that. I've got (you may find this hard to believe) an extremely friendly and helpful local Honda dealer that does parts searches for me (and my friends,.."What up Ricardo?") when needed to, on Canadian spec stuff.

Peter, I'm very much with you on the "slightly higher price versus service" idea. Nothing I like better than giving my local dealer a shot at providing goods even if it's a couple bucks more than some of the on-line vendors. I like to think I'm helping keep their doors open in a way when I patronize their store front. They in turn try and give me a break on cost. This "break" comes after having built a rapport with the dealer over the years. I also like that I don't end up paying shipping charges when I order via the local dealer, which may be a savings again, even in this day and age of "free shipping". Many deals are available in the U.S. via on-line outlets. The shine is often times worn off those purchases when it comes time to deal with Canada Customs and Duty and the like. (Taxes may be collected on the Canadian dollar value of the items) Brokerage fee's are a real kill joy to, if you get nailed with them, when shipping into Canada. Rare is it that I actually have something shipped from the U.S. into Canada though as I'm lucky enough to live on the border with a U.S. shipping address available to me. But even doing my own importing, the cost now is and extra $12.00 to 15.00 to do an on-line US purchase (bridge toll and parcel pick-up fees).

T.

I get dealer pricing from www.ronniesmailorder.com. They have the usual parts fiche that most of the dealers have and I can almost always match Partzilla prices. Their retail prices aren't anything to brag about, but if I can save the members here some money, I'll be happy to. I can have them drop ship right to your door and their shipping costs are reasonable. All I ask is that you provide me with a list of part numbers with the Partzilla prices.

Tom

I scanned and made the US CB1100F parts manual available here when I found a copy and would do so for other bikes if I had access to them.

Of course it is much easier to find the microfiche version than the printed version. Crying or Very sad

Prior to the "upgrading" of Honda dealer fische software, there was a print button which printed out the diagram, part numbers and price. I order from Honda Direct or from tomk1960 lately.

However, http://rockwallhonda.com/ still uses the old software... I don't know for how long so go there and print out what you need. Use the Print button on the page (not from the browser) to get the diagrams, part numbers and prices.

If you'd rather purchase a hard copy of the parts manual you could try here:

http://www.helminc.com/helm/homepage.asp?Style=helm

Here's a link to there 1983 1100F parts manual priced at $39.95usd

http://www.helminc.com/helm/product2.asp?Make=AHC&Model=CB07&Year=1983&Category=16&class%5F2=AHC&mk=Honda+Motorcycle&yr=1983&md=CB1100F&dt=Parts+Catalogs&module=&from=result&Style=helm&Sku=14MG5DE2&itemtype=N

These are direct copies of the factory manuals/fiche and of very good quality. I've ordered from them a few times.

FWIW,

yup
I have every honda including atv, scooter and power products on Fiche, (up to early 90's)
but without a reader/machine to convert it to pdf, it's kinda useless anymore.

I bought a portable reader like this one years ago. Folds up and stores easy when not in use:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Visidyne-Portable-Microfiche-Reader-MK-II-A-/262800583262?hash=item3d3022aa5e:g:5BEAAOSw-0xYauTG

Several available from different sellers on eBay, just do a search.

Nice to know they are there but I feel better copying a paper one than sharing copies of a purchased PDF (those pesky copyright laws).

Goose,
The Helm Inc products are officially sanctioned re-prints so no issues with copy-write, at least not that I'm aware of. They most often come as soft cover bound volumes just like the factory manuals. Some come as loose-leaf/hole punched reprints, but you can purchase a "Honda" logo binder to store them in if you like. Very cost effective. Although the digital media has it's place, when I'm wrenching in the driveway/garage I like the printed hardcopy close to hand.

I understand that, I was implying I would not purchase a catalog from them and make copies for others. I have less of a problem of doing it with an original Honda manual (even though it might be a Honda copyright violation).

BTW, my PDF prints out very nicely if you need a paper copy. Now help me out with the pages so it also covers the Canadian 1100f (which I have a few).Very Happy

I have Cookie's bike, which I know you are a little familiar with, ready to go back on the road:

Cookies bike!!! Holy Cow...how'd you come by that one? Wondered what happened to him and the bike, on and off over the years. Total agree/understand your comment re: copywrite now, thanks. The Helm stuff is so nice (IMHO) that it's worth the cost, rather then even attempt to scan and print a copy of same. It's nice to have that factory binding and cover and such. Re: Canadian spec parts. I've got a Canadian 1100F spec parts manual that I ran off at the local library. They had a micro-fiche copier/printer that you could print from their micro-film archives. Its' not the best but it does the job. I've not used it some time as my local dealer has been the ref. provider.

Still blows my mind that you've got Cookies bike. Last time I saw it was St. Thomas (Sparta) drag races a long long time ago.

Thanks for the memories.

basmn has been great getting me some of the CDN 1100f pages I needed but I could not make a full parts catalog out of them (he might have done something similar to that you did).

As for Cookie, Doug's name and phone number are written under the seat, perhaps I could try ringing the phone. And this is how it came to me from the PO on NJ (yes the shop just sat the engine back in the frame), I did leave the Stratford Cycle Centre and other decals on the swingarm to keep it original:

Image

Of course I would not know this little bit of the bikes history without your wonderful commentary back when the bike was first listed for sale so I owe you one.

As for "Cookie's" bike, he must have been on this forum before my time? Was he from St. Thomas Tony?

I use the same one but the images are very poor resolution and not suited for being blown up to a standard sized page. It does let you copy and paste part numbers though which is helpful.

I don't think Cookie goes way back, long before this site was born.

Here is some info (and the only post by the PO), the bike seems to have been on a tour of Canadian provinces if the PO got it from PEI:

And the name on the seat pan is Doug Cook (or Cooke, I can't remember now) which explains the name 'Cookie'.

When I met Doug "Cookie" Cook it was at St. Thomas drag strip during the summer of 1991-92 I think. Mrhemi and I were campaigning his 1983 Harley FXSB Lowrider off of my motorcycle trailer that year I think. I bout crapped myself as he (Cookie) was the only F bike in street trim that I'd every seen at the drags. He haled from Stratford Ontario and had work done by Stratford Cycle Centre and there was a rather loose sponsorship of a sort which included him and a couple other Stratford racers as I recall (according to Cookie) There was a guy (Cookie's friend) on a built 1980 GS1100 in full on race trim that raced with him. His name was also Doug (I think) and he was a hairdresser by trade. The Suzuki was yellow with gold Kosman wire wheels, struts, wheelie bar, airshifter,Dyna ignition, raked out front end, etc etc, a nice looking unit.

Cookie worked at the Stratford Hospital in the kitchen ergo the "Cookie" moniker . At that same first drag strip meet up, there was another F bike, 1100F but it had a big block in it, aftermarket cast cylinder block, maybe MTC?, and it was bored to 1200cc or close to it. I had a short chat with that guy and he was all about the "sleeper" machine. Other then the gold Trispoke comstars there was nothing outlandish about his F It was a deep maroon or that cherryblack color (that was the rage back then) without any factory decals at all. It went rather well and was street driven. I think he was from St. Thomas area or London maybe (no idea where that machine ended up either). Anyway over the next few weekends I continued to meet Cookie at the drags as Mrhemi and I ran his Harley. Cookie ran a 4-1 pipe on the bike but no canister..it just dumped out the collector. I forget what brand of pipe it was. He said he had a Wolf pipe at home that he was looking to get rid of and did I want it. Which I did. I traded him a scratched up U.S. spec 1100F 1/4 fairing for the pipe, which turned out to be the lower entry level Wolf street pipe. It was not the Wolf Pro Pipe I was really looking for. I later sold the pipe to a local kid with a 1980 750F. Cookie said he was going to make the F a full out drag machine and the fairing would work well with the plans he had. Goose, your picture looks very much the way I remember the bike back in the day. I remember the red grips, cut down seat, and the script on the tail piece. Doug was a good shit and we talked at every meeting. I don't know if a wife and kids came along but at some point I only every remember seeing Doug the hair dresser at the tracks, both St. Thomas and Grand Bend after a while. Money may have gotten tight I think but that's a guess based on a vague memory. Saved your picture to my archives...thanks for sharing.

On the manual front: I may have confused the parts manual with the FSM..as I do have a photo copy of the FSM for the Canadian/Euro spec machines. I'lld double check the shelf to make sure.

T.
