Hi.

I admittedly don't post here that often now as it is a bit clunky compared to other social media available without mentioning names haha. But that's not to say that CBF.net is irrelevant as it certainly has its place when it comes to detailed advice and guidance, parts contacts, for sale etc. Its definitely THE one stop shop for all things F. It's also been a source for meeting like minded individuals and I've met some great people through here, one being Jim Sawtell when he was out here at the Barry Sheene Festival of Speed. I had my R there and over a couple of beers or three he convinced me that I need to do a bit of work to the girl since I hadn't done anything more than a couple of oil changes since its rebirth, 6,000klm ago. So to a lot of you guys it wouldn't be much but for me it was a lot more than I would consider doing myself which included removal of the belly pan to check for any surprises of the plastic kind from deteriorating tensioner and guides but happily the strainer and pan were fairly clean with not much crud at all, and I also took the opportunity to put in one of Headless's strainers. While the pipes were off I had the headers ceramic coated black rather than the chrome I stupidly had them done first time, took the cover off to check the valve clearances which all checked out well with plenty of clearance which I was happy about as I'm not sure I'm ready to do shim swaps yet, one day no doubt but not just yet. Adjusted front and rear cam chains, thought I'd have a look at the starter clutch for good measure but the mechanic that did the original top end re-build for some reason decided it would be easier to bond the cover on rather than source a gasket and since it isn't making any noises I decided to leave it for now as it will be a bitch to get off.

So now she's all back together, new plugs and filters, fired right up once I found the coil earth I missed and boy doesn't she sound good, purrs like a kitten, no cam chain noise at all, no leaks, all ready for the first Spring ride happy in the knowledge that everything is as it should be thanks again to this great resource.

What exhaust do you have on that has separate headers?

Interesting question. I got the bike off my sister in-laws brother who bought it new in '84 and I know he never changed the pipes so I assume it was delivered with separate headers and mufflers which are clamped with the same clamps as the others and the original mufflers were of the reverse cone type. I checked the parts fiche and your right it shows it as a one piece part so in short, I have no idea. Would be interesting to hear from other Australian delivered R owners to see if theirs is the same.

And unfortunately I'm not the Stig because I don't get to race around in really expensive and rare cars which would be the worlds best job wouldn't it?!!

Gday Chooky, how's it going.

Another meeting you need to plan for is the Island Classic in Jan. If not Jan 2017 try to make it to Jan 2018. Jim and the Kiwi are both planning on coming.

Well done on the bike man, perfect timing as the days are warming up and getting longer.

When it comes time to do the shims I reckon a big part of the job is getting the valve cover off/on. If you have checked the clearances it is not much more to change shims if needed. Maybe order a shim tool now so you have it for next time and a micrometer isn't all that expensive or you can borrow the stuff from me along with heaps of shims and then have a beer at the same time while picking the stuff up.

Have a good one
Scott

G'day Scott. How's your rebuild going? Getting the cover off isn't a drama, just need to remove everything, coils, fairing frame, bit of work disconnecting all the electronics but no choice really. I was very happy to see that the guy that did the motor was generous with the clearances, must have known his stuff so I wont need to check them till next winter. Probably wont get to the Island Classic next year (unless Jim goes!) but will definitely be there to see his bike run the year after and already looking forward to the BSFOS, fantastic event. The CEMCC show is on the 25th at Cooper St Engadine which I will put the bike in again which is always a good show, heaps of bikes and variety, worth getting to. I cant compete with the chrome trailer queens but good fun anyway, always a good excuse to give the girl a wash haha.

Will have to grab the other guys and head over for a ride some time.

G'day Chooky.

As luck would have it I'll be in NZ when the show day is on so I'll miss it once again. Would have been good to put my 3 on display.

Definitely need to get a few guys together for a day out now the warmer weather is upon us, maybe start planning a day for early October?

Pete.

Hi Peter.

October ride sounds good, a few mates are doing a ride tomorrow so I hope the rain clears up. Too bad you'll miss the show, your bikes would look great together. I suppose they'd be trailer queens as well since you cant ride them all haha, but then you'd just be taking votes off me Very Happy

Sounds like we'll need to start a dedicated thread on this? I've booked accomodation for the weekend, so I'll have to hook up with as many of you guys as I can.

We are going to be at the 2018 Island Classic with our Superbike with all the latest tricks at that time. Not to keen in entering the International Challenge races due to my disagreement with the rules but there is the possibility to provide our bike as a back-up for Jim's entry or if conditions need it. This is a big step to allow someone else in the seat and it may never be required so will just see just how this unfolds.
Never the less we will be there.

Captain

If this is a fresh rebuild you might want to consider checking the shims in another 800km or so, after everything has had a chance to run in and find home

Thats what this exercise was about. Jim's insisting I check the clearances since the rebuild "or you will regret not doing it" gave me the frights as I'd done 6k without having a look and the fact that not having had a running motorcycle for 20 odd years meant I was having far too much fun ridding it every weekend to want to take it off the road and do a major service. But having now done it I have a much better knowledge of the motor and piece of mind that all is as it should be.

Now if this bloody rain would just disappear. Why does it have to wait till the weekend to rain!

[quote="Chooky"]G'day Scott. How's your rebuild going?

I've been busy with other stuff and haven't even thought about touching the engines. But I guess it needs to be done so maybe soon I'll have a go.

I just booked a house only 2 weeks ago myself, so I'll be there for sure. Don't know if I'll ride or drive till the last minute, but a catch up is in order for sure.
