Popcorn Popcorn

Would be very interested to see how this looks after a few hours on a hot OEM exhaust, ie double wall down tubes.

Dale, I would ask your local ceramic shop if they'd be willing to buy some and shoot a sample panel for you. Otherwise you might be waiting a long time before someone else gets an exhaust done with this exact finish.

Note that this particular finish requires that the final cure be done on the bike for at least an hour of riding.

My local shop said they would try it if you buy it. Wanna be a guinea pig?

LMK,
How much does an OEM 11F exhaust take to do ? Will 1 quart do a full exhaust , or do the down pipes with this then do the cans and shields in powder ? How much for his labor ?

I wouldn't mix it up like that since the prep for each is slightly different, along with cure temps. It's possible, but the shop won't like it and will have to add for the extra labor involved, masking, and two runs through the oven. $125 for a quart seems extremely high too. The oven cure ceramic that I have access to is half that price. Perhaps the gloss finish is what they're using to mark it up. Unfortunately, Columbia Coatings doesn't have it yet. Shop around - if PBTP can get it, then others can as well. They don't manufacture the powders or finishes - they're just the end seller. There are tons of suppliers out there, so there has to be more available.

I charge (at a minimum) $250 to do a 4-into-1 in high temp powder but can't do the stock exhausts since they won't fit in my 46" blast cabinet. If you can find a ceramic shop that can do it for this price or slightly higher, it's a steal.

If I ever expand to a bigger shop, ceramic will be considered. Not sure I want to though, since there are VOC's and environmental considerations that will make it more of a hassle than powder is.

Tom

Here's the benefit of QC Coatings:

1. Their blasting techniques and equipment are powerful enough to etch into the chrome for the best adhesion.

2. Their large oven is big enough to put a car in.

I've seen some pretty big things in there, they did a top fuel dragster frame a month or so ago.

I'll manage this for you (n/c) this one time if you elect to do it just so we all know.

I'll ask them if a quart is enough (I think it should be).

Email button at the bottom of this post if you want to discuss further.

It would be great to see these results. I have a set of CB1100F stock pipes that have already be blasted (probably need a touch up now) that I've been considering ceramic coating but didn't like what I heard on the black coatings to date (requires buffing to get a gloss finish). This sounds promising to get a higher gloss Black from this coating.

Thx for posting.

Mark

Just to be sure, this is a liquid, not powder...

Sprayed on as a liquid, baked in the oven like a powder somewhere around 350F usually.

Silver ceramics are then tumbled in ceramic BBs to achieve the shiny finish for about 30 minutes. But, not this stuff.

I've had some off-site communications but no one yet to commit.

Tom K. said his pipes weren't good candidates.

Wayne or Dale, before you buy the material, send me whatever you want to get done. I'll take it to QC, get a labor quote and advise you. If OK with you, then, buy the material and we'll get it done. My intention is to solicit them to do this at a reduced cost so they can do additional work in the future. To be clear, I make no promises on what they will charge. Just trust me to do my best on your behalf. I've only been doing business with these folks about 12 years.

After the first guy commits, everyone else can deal direct with QC Coatings or whoever you want to go to, at whatever their normal rate will be.

LMK.

Hey guys,
So has anyone moved forward with this new coating?
TomK has a set of my 4-1 headers + Pipe (not the can) that he is going to help me get Ceramic coated (he decided because of their condition they may not be a a good canidate for high temp powder coating) , if I like this new coating I'm also going to have a set of CB1100F OEM pipes done. My plan is to use this suggested coating.
Option may be that I have both done at the same time.

Please let me know if anyone has tried this coating yet.

Thx!

Of course I'll let everybody know the results good or bad when the pipe is done lol...I'm hoping it's exactly what we all hope for it to be. I haven't posted anything yet because I have no idea how long it will take yet and was planning on letting everybody know once we hear from QC Coatings as to time frame, and that's when it's convenient for J.R. to get it there to them. I just got the ceramic yesterday and was too busy at work today to get out and ship it up to J.R. So hang tight and I will keep everybody a breast of the progress.

I will be ordering a quart of this very soon and will be bringing Mark's exhaust to a nearby shop to coat. The owner is very reasonable and happy to work with me on this. He admitted that there are very limited finishes available and was surprised to hear that gloss black was back on the map. He said up front that with regular riding, 3-4 seasons might be all that one will get out of a ceramic finish. In the case of our bikes, which don't see heavy every day use, it will hopefully last longer.

Note that PBTP's finish is not high gloss. It isn't much shinier than the semi-gloss black that I use on many parts. (look at the examples in the link up above) f you plan on using this, go into it knowing that it won't come close to the original black chrome.

Dale - you've been patiently waiting for a gloss black finish. Now that it's available, are you going to try it on one of your spare exhausts that needs refinishing?
