Hi Guys
I have 1980 1100 rb1 ,been sitting in shed for years ,
needs restoring, the id plate on steering head is bit damaged from some
issue in the past ,I see ebay guy selling reproduced ones & would like to grab one.
Problem is I cannot read month of build to get printed on new plate, does anyone
know when the first 150 were produced, engine number is less than 2000110
They were raced in Castrol 6 hour that year ,so I guess very close to that time .

Hello Danny,

I'm sure someone will chime in with the info you need. Sounds like you have a valuable piece of history sitting in your shed, and well worth spending a few dollars getting
it back and running again. Some pictures would be great if you have any to share, we are all interested!

G'day Danny,
I would be a bit suspicious of someone offering to reproduce ID plates on the interweb,especially some thing as rare as an RB,identity theft and all that. I remember back in the 70's & 80's there were reports of people taking GTHO's in for service and dodgy people taking rubber castings of ID plates to build fakes. I'm not saying this person is doing this but if it was me I would be very careful about who I gave the details to.

As far as photos go I am not sure if I have any previous ones & its bit
cramped in with stuff to get much of shot . I bought one when they came out
in 80 so have photos of it around some ware, might be some with them, seeing I bought new one
you think I would now the compliance date, but no. the one pictured in the add has 9 month 80,
That may be right as they raced in Castrol 6 hour that year in October I think ,seems a bit close to me.
Yes you have good point about fraud thingy, but what do you do?
Search ebay for item 282039758864 to see plate .

There is an ebay seller in Switzerland who does Honda VIN plates with the numbers and all. Don't have a link right now but should be easy to find.
You say your RB is an RB1. Do you mean it is one without the fairing? I thought there were only 50 of these made.

No idea how accurate this is, but the Honda parts catalogue for the RB states the the RB1 as
Australian market only frame numbers SC05 2000009 > 29.
That would mean only 20 and I've often heard the figure of 50 being produced.

That's correct, but it also does not list any RBIIs for Australia, which would mean there were none sold there. Confused

HI guys
The plate I am looking at is from Switzerland,
Von ,September is around the date ,but how long before did they get
the aust adr plate .
Stueecat , I also bought new one in 1980 ,engine number 1 different
to bike I have now ,eng no frame no, 28 different with frame lower
with neither fitting into that bracket, I believe there had to be 100 or
more available to public for them to be allowed in 6 hour production race
wich was on late October 80 . From memory I thought number was 100 to 150 bought in
There were no rb2 sold in aust ( with fairing)

Either 112 or 113 RB 1 were made.
Had to be more than 100 to compete in the six hour.

Just to add confusion to the question of how many RB1's were produced, here's a link to an 'International CBX Owners Association' web page were they had the opportunity through the Japanese 1100R owners club to ask questions of the designers and engineers involved in the 1100R at the time of its production, and other CB's and CBX's too.

4th question down is, how many RB1's were produced, the answer given is about 20.

hi guys
Certainly some confusion about numbers of rb1,the -number I said was really
only from gossip back in the day .there was fair number raced with team Honda , plus other teams
also the ones used to make superbikes, then the road reg ones ?
Anyway I called Honda mpe at Melbourne yesterday trying to get compliance date on plate
told me was to old to find electronically but if I email all details to him he will look up the old fashion way,
in the email I will ask how many were compliance for aust &see if that goes anywhere.

Date on my compliance plate is 9/1980.
Shipment must have been air freighted to Australia?
More than twenty were sold here.

Just to be clear, the ID, or compliance plate gets attached by the importers. It does nothing more than confirm the bike meets relevant local Australian Design Rules at the time, and the number stamped into it is the Frame Number stamped into the head stock (the VIN). As long as these 2 numbers, and the relevant ADRs match (7, 28, 33), I can't see an issue with attaching a reproduction plate.

However, if the numbers on the head stock have been obfuscated in some way, I would be concerned.

Don't know about Australia, but here in the U.S., the bikes came from Japan with the VIN plate riveted to the head stock. Yes, there is a number also stamped on the steering neck and there is an additional compliance plate on the bike, but the latter has no ID information, like VIN number or build date, for example.

Hi Danny,
Unfortunately, due to the age of your machine, it is not possible for us to provide you with the Build Date. Nor is it possible to tell you how many bikes were produced at that time. I can tell you that the CB1100R's were only imported into Australia in limited batches of around 100 units. However, there were two distributors of Honda motorcycles in those days, and we have no records of any units imported by Bennett Honda, in NSW.
As for the replacement plate from Switzerland, it is Federal offence, under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1985, for anyone, other than the Compliance Plate Approval holder to manufacture or fit Compliance Plates. Honda Australia can arrange for a new plate to be made, but cost is around $350.00, due to the fact that it is an etching process that would have to be set up especially to make one plate. Hi guys ,
So the above is the email I received from Honda MPE in Melbourne.
I was never after build date , just compliance date in aust to make correct .
I still have rego papers from last rego MARCH 1998, so no prob with rego , number stamped o frame fine.BUT still no accurate number imported.

I think the only reliable record of numbers made are the official Honda VIN listings in the parts manual. They are pretty darn accurate for the CBX and the other DOHCs. No reason why they should not be for the R.
