I still have the vac valve on my '82 CBX and I address the "empty bowl hard start " issue with blowing into the vent line. Easy to do.
On another bike, I have installed an electric fuel pump from a Kawasaki GPZ that I got at a motorcycle graveyard. That unit stops pumping when it gets back pressure from closed float valves.

Rob that is fine that the pump shuts off against the floats, but in the case of an accident and the bike is laying on its side, ignition still on, the pump will continue to pump fuel everywhere with the potential for a fire. I know a lot of the VFR boys say to get rid of the fuel pump relay because it can be a problem on those but it was fitted for the above reason, exactly for the same reason our bikes were fitted with the vac valve, motor not running, no fuel can flow from the tank

True. You should also wear a fireproof suit. Only ride bikes that are equipped with airbags. Never drive a convertible, because they provide no protection during roll-overs.
On second thought, you should never leave the house.....

I may finally get my 900 out for a ride this weekend but first I'm going to check that there is no fuel in the float bowls. It has been sitting all winter with a full tank. You've got me thinking Rick..
