Is not infallible. I had an oil leak from the ignition cover, found some metal inside the cover when I pulled it, so I pulled the whole thing apart and found this:

So ... I guess I need a new starter clutch. Anyone have a good one they can sell me?

Thanks ..

I don't see any oem part number markings on that bearing. Cheap bearing off eBay?

That does not look good Steve

Was that a pattern part?

The photo below is a genuine Yamaha one, it has some part numbers on and you can see some colouring on from the hardening process

I have been using 2 of the R6 ones in my 1123 engines using genuine Yamaha ones, I have not checked them since i fitted them in the spring of 2014 but I will inspect one to see how it is holding up

Keith

My clutch has been installed for 3 years now and travelled approximately 8,000 kilometers. Can't say how many "starts" that equates to but it sounds the same as the day I installed it. I think the one other documented failure on this board had a non genuine part fitted also.

Was it still working? Did you get it from Headless? Did you contact him?

Yeah, it was working and it's one of Cary's, but I certainly don't hold this against him and wouldn't ask him to warranty a used part like this as I don't think it's part of what he mods. I don't know how to explain it, but there's a little "chain", partly visible in the pic on the left and top, that goes around and holds the rollers in. It was part of this chain, much like a link, that I initially found, and when I pulled it off the insides just fell out all over the place.

A little bummed ... but that's how it goes sometimes with old girls like this. Part of the charm, right?

BTW cliffie - did you get the PM I sent you?

Yes, I did, and I'm in Abq, but it's been to busy to try to ship the backrest. Sorry, I'll get it to you next time (hopefully not another 3 months, LOL.

Steve, Just send it back to me and I'll take care of it. The manufacturer will stand by their sprag units and I'll rebuild it and get it back to you. I sent you a PM with my shipping address.

I think the problem is the missing centering Ring.
It is not possible to center the Clutch only with the 6 Screws.
When the 6 holes are bored and you put the Screws in you still have clearence.
The Srews are not a tight fit in the Holes.
This is how I have done mine, with a thin plate that has a ring on the outside to center the Clutch.
And Screws with a short 8mm Shaft that fit tight in the Holes.
