I can see how the "open" 4 studs at the centre would collect any rubbish it's exposed to, but what about the 8 outside studs that are completely enclosed? The only way in I can see is from the top, which is sealed by a copper washer, under a dome-nut, under the valve cover??

I know it gets in, but I'll be buggered if I can work out how? Am I missing something?

I plan to drill some drain holes before I reassemble everything, but that's not a cure is it?

Ian

Hello Ian,

The crap comes in at the cilinder head, between the exhaust ports.
You can drill a hole without problems, i have done it many times now.

Wout.

Well that's the bit I don't get Wout, because at least the 4 outside studs on each side are fully enclosed? The head gasket should seal that surface so how the heck does it get in?
