Haven't posted in awhile. Happy New Year fellas. Haven't had much to do or buy on my bike guess that's a good thing?

A couple weeks ago with the awesome weather I started prepping my bike for a new paint job. Probably have it done in a month or so.

Here's where I'm at.

This isn't my bike. I wish, but those are the colors I'm doing it in.

That's one of Webike!'s scooters. You know, the $2400 stainless exhaust... It does look good!

Personally, if I was going to go with that grey scheme, I would not use the honda 'wing' on the tank. I think it looks like a nasty afterthought. The bike you have shown has an interesting decal on the side cover. It is the original stripe pattern, but in a contrasting darker grey/black. I think it would look really cool if you could get a decal maker to make the original tank decal in that same contrasting dark grey/black. I think that this somehow makes the proportions of the bike and tank work aesthetically MUCH better than the 'wing'. I think that it also acts as a visual link between the old and the new parts of the bike - modern suspension, brakes etc and modern paint colour, classic tank, engine and decals.

Anyway, just my thoughts...

Good luck with the project!

I quickly tried combining that wing with the 81 scheme and it doesn't work

The best graphics on the F-bikes is the original 79-80 750F striping.

+1. With the '80 in 1st place and the '79 in 2nd. But then again, maybe I'm biased.

Nice to see you active again Eric! Metallic gray with black stickers will look super on your ride.

I also am a fan of the 79 and 80 750 stripes. How can you not be when you had one back in the day!!

I realize the photo doesn't really show the black on the tank. Metallic meteor gray and a thinned down metallic black.

My other idea would be a champagne metallic gold and white theme like the bikes in ChiPS. That would be a bit too expensive.

I think your overall color strategy is awesome. I struggled with that Honda wing "decal" too. I decided it was too big. I had the wing on my bike hand painted by a pin-striping artist.

Consider what you can do without decals. The stripes on my bike are also hand painted. Much better than decals IMO.

I have been waffling for some time to add something more to the tank but just cannot get my head around it. Perhaps watching what you do will give me some ideas.

Thanks for posting your progress!!

Dave

I won't be using decals. Maybe only on the side covers since I'll have a 985F stencil made. Same with the wing on the tank. I might do a drop out of the wing so the gray shows through.

I used paint stripper. Not the best idea since it did heat up the one and sunk it in. I'll have to bondo that one and shape it again.

Ps. I ruined my 600f2 fender with the paint stripper... stupid idea with the ABS plastic. Good thing though, got a newer one that's actually the correct year for the forks.

My 2 cents worth, don't be offended by the fact that this bike (see link to video) is is a cafe build and I know it's not an F tank (maybe a K?) but when I saw your shot of the bare metal tank I thought of this bike -- depending on the condition of your tank, I think a really highly polished bare metal would look nice, don't know what you would do with the side covers and tail, maybe a complementing dark color so most of the focus is on the tank. Another idea would be a bright silver metallic like on some of the AMG Mercedes machines -- I think that would contrast nicely with the black engine. And you could still use the shadow Honda-Wing decal. I tried to copy an image file of this but couldn't -- I hope it's ok to include a link. ((((https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeaOJzYkS8k))))

That's a really nice looking cafe bike. I like the polished tank but I'm pretty set on the black and gray.
