Bone work is brutally basic.
I doubt he was pulling your leg when he said "a Sears Craftsman drill made for medical use."
They use a hammer and bolster for re-breaking bones.
It wasn't long ago when they started using electric drills, before that they used carpenters hand drills, especially for trepanning (drilling holes in yer skull). |

Made an aluminum AHM style race can for the bike. Its 5.12lbs lighter then my steel version.

The recommendation from AHRMA is for an oil absorbent mat inside the belly pan, this needs to be secured in place, a bung or drain plug is also a good idea. Get caught in the rain and the pans fill with water, easier to pull the plug than remove the pan. |

Thanks Nathan there ok but still not up to my expectations from myself. I need more seat time.
Jim, Dennis doesn't use anything that I know of? I'm not going to worry about it unless it comes up. That's an easy fix.
Thank you for the tip though. Some fuel foam would do the job easy enough and weighs nothing.
Peace, Jim |

AHRMA may recommend a mat, but I wouldn't run one and like I said previously I'd only seen them on 2-strokes. The rule book quote earlier in this string shared why, so I'm now educated. Kinda. Having a mat only adds complexity and weight without any real benefit unless you've got a motor with more than it's share of oil leaks that needs a diaper. The hot-tech that occurs after EVERY practice session and race checks for those kinds of leaks and you'd get your tech sticker pulled until it was fixed. Having had my tech sticker pulled a couple of times enables me to speak from experience that virtually no engine could leak enough oil to need a mat yet still pass hot tech.
If your motor grenades or spits a seal and pumps oil out, all a mat does is stop the pan from filling as it doesn't instantly absorb the oil dump.
The bung or drain is a good idea - I've raced in the rain plus had a carb stick and fill the belly pan with gas. You'd have to safety-wire the drain too, plus have some kind of built-up area to have the bung or plug fasten in to. |

I don't know of any racers with a oil mat in a 4 stroke. The 2 strokes can run with just a mat and wire mesh to hold it in place. Sometimes belly pans are an impossible fit on 2 strokes, not enough room between chambers and frame or too bulky outside of chambers causing loss of ground clearance. |

OK, here's the new motor design and last that I can see.
The RSC rods came and they turned out to be 900 length rods with the 15mm pins. This would mean that I would have to do a lot more then I wanted to spend on this motor while I continue to build the ultimate 930cc motor. I talked with Brent and we came with a design but the local motor machine shops didn't have the tools to do what I needed and neither did I.
I decided to use stock 1100 pistons that I got a few years ago from CBXdog, 1100 rods, the RSC short cylinders (they just need a hone to fit the used piston), a .010" and .005" set of copper base gaskets with a .080" aluminum spacer between them (This will get my deck height back to zero), and a .043" copper head gasket.
Then all of the goodies inside of Brents head.
I like this combo as I have everything here to do it. Just need some new rings and they are on the way. This gets me back to a 930cc motor and the long rod will take some of the whip out of the stroke. The only draw back is that there are no domes and I don't know if I will use the 750 A cam chain or the 1100? I may know that later today?
If this doesn't transform then my back up 811cc motor will have to do. Wish me luck PLEASE.
I'm cutting in the cylinder skirt windage notches today so maybe I'll have some time to show on here?
Peace, Jim |

That didn't take too long.
I had to do the ouside of number 1 and 4 due to shipping damage. One was badly chipped and the other side was dented in .020". This took care of the problem and hey it saved weight.
Now its time to machine the cooling holes and repair the broken fins.
Cya later, Jim |

Yeeeeeeesssssssssssssss!!!!
I'm running out of time so I took the Yoshimura header that Dennis sent over to a fab/welder buddy of mine to ask him if he had some time to repair the header for me. He said no that he's swamped just like everybody else I know.
Then I asked for the 100th time if he would sell me his nearly perfect Bassani that's on his 80 CB750F. I had been offering $400.00 for the last few years but upped the anny to $500.00 today and he said OK. I loaded that puppy up before he could change his mind. Its mine. Been wanting one ever sense the day I sold my last one many years ago.
I will only use the header part and make a new mid pipe and install the aluminum AHM style race can that I made. Also started on the 82 AHM replica swingarm made from scratch. I had to ditch the idea of making the nice dog leg bend on the right main tube (I will need to make a die to do that) and am making it more like the Cal Fab street version of the AHM arm with only one bend in the side tubes.
The factory arm had a nice sexy dog leg curve on the brake side and the chain side had just one bend in it. The Cal Fab had just the same bend on both sides and that's the easiest so I'm making it that way for now.
Anyway pretty stoked and its coming along but going to be very tight for my departure on April 7th to Willow Springs raceway to deliver the bike to Dennis.
I'll do my best to show some pictures asap otherwise go to my "JES BUILT Motorcycles" FB page to see the updates.
Peace, Jim |

Sorry for not updating more guy's but I'm behind the 8ball and don't have much time. Lots to do still but here is were I'm at with the build.
Got the chain all lined up.
Made the rear caliper a floating caliper style with bronze bushings
Made an aluminum battery box and vent breather tank.
Got the oil lines figured out.
Made custom shock spacers/eyelets
The swingarm collars have an internal oring instead of the steel stock collars, Saving weight wherever possible on my budget.
This was while building the AHM swingarm.
Made a bushing in a 1000c oil pump cover to support the shift shaft better.
Some earlier mock up. The mid pipe is going to be a BITCH as the Bassani collector is in the m idle of the swingam brace box. It will be a cone mid pipe similar to Petrats bike.
Here it is to date.
Keep it in a wheelie, Jim |

Really like what you are doing and I wouldn't like to be one of Dennis's competitors.
Now you know just how much work is envolved but you are almost there with not much more to go.
There is bound to be last minute issues and if I can be of help just call day or night (24/7) and I'll answer.
(I like the yellow, never seen this before, but it works for me)

Thank you Brent. It's getting down to all of the little stuff that seems to take forever. The two hardest things that I have to make are the front caliper hangers and the mid pipe. The rest is just time with not much thinking involved.
Thank's Gene, Nich and Darrin. I'm doing my best to keep the bike era correct with no CNC'd parts and trying to do the type of work that a race mechanic would have done to the bikes back in the day. Good thing for me that most of the mechanics back then were multi tasking and weren't professional welders or machinist's. They were get it done kind of guys. It's more of a raw look instead of the robot made parts that are all identical and perfect on todays bikes.

Hey guys,
I don't know if many of you have heard yet but last week I jokingly asked Brent if he would come help me get the bike ready for Dennis. Can't be told no if you don't ask. Four days later I picked him up at the Portland airport and he is here helping me build the bike and especially the motor. I have learned more in the last few days then in my 46 years of being on the planet.
He will be riding with me to Willow Springs but has to leave on the 24th which is next Friday. If your near the track on the 24th? Come and meet him.
I'm VERY LUCKY that's all I know.
Keep it in a wheelie, Jim |

Good one Brent & Jim. Would just love to see the grin on Jim's face when that engine bursts crisply into life for the very first time.
Stay focused, and don't forget to take time out for ever so important sleep between now and race day, regardless of how the build is going, you're gonna need it.
Looking fwd to pics but only if/when time permits. Keep your eyes on the prize lads.
Cheers..Tony |

I drove for 7 hours total, yesterday, to go hang out with Jim & Brent... Well actually help work on this bike too.. A Whole Lot of TRICK parts on this bike!
This will be a fearsome, Brent Hyde/Jesbuilt, ARHMA Track weapon!!!!!
Jim, on the next Track Day at the Ridge Motorsport, I'll bring my CBX out and maybe we can swap bikes for a few sessions.. |

Are you planning on racing this bike at Road America June 5-7 in the ARHMA race?
If so, and you don't mind, I'd love to see the bike.

I had an unexpected visit from JJam and Captain today! They stopped by on their way to Willow Springs and I got to see the race bike and meet Brent. I picked up some tips from Brent and I'm anxious to try them out. |

Jim,
I estimate a compression ratio of 9:1 or less with stock 1100 pistons.
The Super head, #110 Web cams and the CRS35s should go with a 12.5:1 to give a real punch.
But there are so many things to set up, that you'll have time to address this at a later stage ... |

Well I'm at LAX waiting for my flight home to NZ. I spent the day at Willow Springs Raceway with JJam and his friend "Phil" giving the bike it first run. Small issues to attend too but all in all it past the first hurdle and ran successfully all day. It took at bit of convincing to get Dennis to use a higher-rpm range but he is starting to get the picture. Lots of little adjustments to get the set- up to his liking so he can ride it and use the power but he is getting there.
My job is done and the bike is now in good hands with Jim and Dennis and I believe that they will tune it to be the bike to beat.
Good luck to all and thank you for everyone's time and hospitality. It made my stay and efforts a wonderful memory And one that I will never forget.
