I know that there are several of you guys that have really nice examples of CB1100R's out in the garage. Can some of you post some good clear pictures of your tanks? I was talking to a friend of mine who is pretty damn incredible when it come to metal working and I asked him about making an aluminum tank for me at some time in the future. He said Sure just let me know what you want to do! I really like the R tanks and even though it might look a little goofy on a std F think it would be pretty trick. I would send him a normal tank so he can take measurements of mounting points and such. Then let him work his magic. I worked with him for a little while and even though he is in his 20's he truly is good at what he does. He did the ENTIRE nose on this Ferrari 275 GTB all from flat sheet metal. Turned out better than the original.

Hope these help… they don't really do justice to that lovely side bulge though.
My pro lenses got smashed by a friendly airline baggage handler and are away being repaired. I should get them back next week, so can take clearer images should you need them.
Excuse the dust and background shite… my conservatory has become my winter garage.

Andy those are beautiful! Do you have an approximate total width at the bulges? |

At its widest point it measures 400mm or 15.75" in old money (approx)
There are so many swoops and curves and bulges it would be difficult to give accurate measurements other than width length and depth mind.
Hope that helps?

Best bet at replicating these tanks would be using a composite although it doesn't like fuel. |

There was also an aluminum tank for the F bikes that works with stock body work, although it isn't as beautiful as an R tank that requires changing the "F " look.
I think they were called a Gimbel (sic?) tank.
I have one that needs some minor repair.
I bought mine from Florida and think it may have been a castoff racing part used on a bike that raced at Daytona.
I think a tank like this that was polished with Silver 82 decals would look sharp.

I'm not looking to get an EXACT replica of an R tank but they look SO nice that I'd like to have one that looks similar, particularly those bulges...
I'll send him the stock tank so that the bottom near the back will still line up with the body work and he can do as much work on the rest of it as he wants. I'm also going with the flush mounted gas filler. I'm going to send him some info on all this soon but who knows when I'll actually have him do it. I guess most of that depends on what he want to charge me for it. |

I expect however if you get something a lot closer to exact that it could become a demanding supply ..... |

I told him when we worked together he ought to do something like this on the side. He likes bikes just not as much as most of us do plus his boss is really strict when it comes to side work even if it is at your house on your own time(conflict of interests he says) I'm sure what ever he does will be great I just hope that I have the $ for it and I get the engine done so the whole thing can go back together! |

Sure you can. You just have to use the right materials. |

Yup, even just a regular old polyester resin works fine. Ive built lots of fuel tanks for boats out of it. Epoxy resin is better though. |

I prefer vinylester to polyester as it resists osmotic blistering better, but yeah, epoxy is better. |
