Going to reproduce CBX pipes. Any interest?

Hey guy's just bought these CBX pipes to reproduce and checking to see if I messed up or not? I will also post on the CBX site.

Sorry its a small picture but it's all I have at the moment.

What brand are those pipes Jim?

I have no idea Alan? They looked like a decent design but the mufflers and mid pipes were rusted through. The seller also lives in OR so I should have them this week and know more about them.

Lets see a picture of the end of the muffler. I think I know what brand they are.

I beleive those are Ontario headers. I keep looking at them but I already have several CBX exhausts.
I will be instrested in what you develop.

Jim, have you thought about reproducing it for a 750/900/1100? I would be very interested in a set for a 900.

That's what I'm thinking to JT. That tapered end of the muffler looks very familiar. I didn't know that OMT made any pipes for the CBX.

Here's what the end should look like if they're OMT pipes.

The end of the muffler looks just like what JT showed and what I thought they looked like. I just talked to Melchiro and he thinks the same thing.

Now I'm happy that I spent the cash on them!! Very Happy

I will either role cones exactly like what they come with or also offer the headers with my AHM replica mufflers.

They should be here this week and I will show more of what I find out.

Yes, I also plan to build new systems for the CB-F bikes but you got to remember that there is only me and I can only do so much at one time. I wasn't planning on any CBX pipes but when I found these for a very decent price, I took them.

JJ what material are you thinking of making them from and what finishes?

Mild steel? just paint them with stove black and let the buyer have them Powder Coated or chromed?

Be thorough in your research before you spend any money. There is not much money to be made with repro CBX pipes. The CBXers all tell you : "Yes, make them" and then nobody buys any or doesn't want to spend any money. Your best bet making repro CBX pipes would be to try to duplicate the Supertrapp design in SS if they would take the original tuning plates in the back, which are still available. You could probably ask $1,100 to 1,200 for a set like this. These OT duplicates in black would not fetch more than $800.- is my guess.
Both Delkevic and Sankei original design repro pipes are still out there and they go for around $1,200.- in chrome. It is getting thin in this price range.

I fully understand that I'm not going to sell a thousand of them or even get rich. I'm not concerned with that. I do this because I love my work and like new challenges. These I will make by hand in limited quantities Pre sold.
Mainly I want a cool set of pipes for the CBX that I may or may not ever own. Laughing

My friend had an OMT exhaust system on his 80 CBX for a while. It sounded sweeeet!

Weren't they originally out of California? just a small outfit as I recall, a Canadian friend ran an OMT exhaust on his CBX for awhile, sounded great and had good ground clearance.

Yes. I visited Kaz at his shop in the San Fernando Valley to purchase some parts for my old CB550F.

Go throw a line out over at CBXWorld too.

I bought a set of OEMs many years ago with the thought of refurbishing them. They are collecting dust in my rafters half a nation away from you. I have $285 into them.

If I ever get off my ass and do my CB750F kit bike I'll need a set for that too. The set that came with it are sketchy at best.

Bob, I'll stick to this OMT style for now. Lots to learn in the up coming months. The Schule pipes are really cool but when I get to the CB-F pipes I have a plan. My plan has been done before so I won't ever take credit but what I want isn't made any more.

Galen, The Yosh style is nice but those MGPWerks pipes hang to low for my liking plus they already have that style covered and it's a pretty small market so anything I do will be a new/old style.

Here are the pipes I bought. Glad I found them as they are perfect for replicating.

The headers and mid pipes could still be used but the mufflers are rusted through but they are all there so perfect for my use!! Cool

And Yes they are OMT.

I got a CBX head off of Louis from the CBX site for free just paid the shipping. I will use the head to use as a jig while welding the new ones up.

Hi Jim,

I was able to get an '81 CBX last year and I absolutely love the ride. Cost would be a factor (at least for me), but I would be interested in set.
I always thought the six into six looks really cool and have been thinking about how to reproduce my own.

Let me know if you need a guinea pig.

I love the sound of the 6 into 6 but hate the look and who wants all that space to burn your leg on and pack the weight? Not me.

I think that when I get to this project that when the first set is done, I'll drive up to Melchiros place with some beer and sweet talk him into removing his pipes for the day.

Hahahaha.. No prob.. Come on up for the day.. This will be fun...

And no, I am not a fan of 6 into 6 pipes.. I don't like the look of it or the weight.. 6 into 2 Stainless CBX pipes would be killer!!! Hopefully, I'll have my 68mm OMT pistons inside the motor.

If I were going to pick a CBX pipe to reproduce, it would be a Racer 1. First choice would be Schule but it is far to complicated. That is why they are $3000.00 The Racer 1 is a 6 into 2 into 1 and works very well. Let me add that the OMT is a good pipe and there are not many that I will say that about. The Supertrapp 6x2 is also a good pipe.

My two cents, the Bassani 6 into 2 into 1, the Hindle 6 into 2 and the first generation Kerker Megaphones ( the real ones not the fakes out there now) all these pipes are discontinued except for the Bassani, its being reproduced.

jjam you have a good pipe to reproduce, it may not have the name recognition of some of the bygone larger pipe manufacturers but if you can make them for a decent price I'm sure you'll sell them.

Here is a pic of a Racer-1 pipe for all CBX's. Would love to know the difference between the Racer-1 and the Bassani as they look mostly the same to me.
