This might be what we were talking about in the other Chrome thread, but this is crazy!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-1cTpSZ1l8

This stuff isn't any more durable than paint, but it sure as hell looks like chrome to me!!

I think it's durability and resistance to chemicals/fluids would depend on that final clear coat. I wonder how heat resistant it is, say for a valve cover?
I would definately re-do my 11F chain guard with that shit!!

Cheers!

If you can tint that clear coat as well it has possibilities for restoring comstars too.

Well impressed…

I saw this used on a West Coast Customs episode, about a year ago, and they did a entire car. There was 1 guy painting and I think 2 guys rinsing it off. The car was a R8 Audi.

Its a standard lorum ipsum filler text Mike… us graphic design monkeys use it when we are working out font styles and colours and size etc.

Looks like he stopped bothering with that website quite some time ago.

Jebby - I think a fairly substantial investment is needed in order to get set up to do this. The German company's web site (mentioned on Jay Leno's Garage) appears to be frozen in time with no recent updates, no contact info, pricing, etc. There are several other companies out there offering similar spray-on chrome set-ups, but you're looking at an initial expenditure of a few thousand bucks.

The finish is beautiful and could be a lucative business for restoring chromed plastic pieces in old cars, as well as other areas. I wonder if it's taken off yet?

No idea of pricing, but these guys in the UK seem to be using the same process:

fxChromespray

and these guys seem to be selling home sets:

Chrome Illusion

There must be loads of people doing and selling this process in the US ...

Regards,

Max

I did a helmet paint job in this stuff called Mirrachrome as the base color, its as durable as your paint would be and as chemical resistant. It's a pain to apply though.

Its called mirra chrome here in the states.

Your helmet painting is second to none, Nunzio. I see all sorts of possibilities in the future. Maybe a VF helmet? Smile

I can get it right about half the time. The difficulty is it sprays on with higher pressure and you don't have much paint coming out of the gun. It's very difficult and I won't really do it for anyone as its hit or miss. Go on YouTube and watch some videos.

You have to have a black base, followed by a perfectly smooth clear coat, then the MirraChrome goes on. You don't scuff the clear, just mist the MirraChrome on till it looks chrome, follow with their clear urethane. It really is hit or miss.

There is another process that is even better, its called vacuum metalizing. The only issue there is you have to strip the helmet down to nothing but the shell. All the inerds and the rubber trim. They can do the plastic vents separately. That yields the best and is what most of the helmet painters like Troy Lee uses. Oh here is a picture of a Helmet I did for Patrick Dempsey the actor. You probably seen it in his DocuDrama Patrick Dempsey Racing LeMans on Velocity. And his Partners Joe Foster.
