Just a little project, I just brought a CBX for myself to ride on the street. We had one of these just the same (Red 79) as our first race bike all those years ago and which makes having one again so cool.
however it will never intrude on my work with our "F" Superbike as that is far to interesting and rewarding.

First I'm going to install the OEM exhaust and change the tires as the front is oversize and then ride it around until the end of summer.
During that time and as time permits, I'll start taking measurements and weights to sort out what needs doing to improve it. Talk to a few people to get advise, listen to what they say, and plan accordingly. However I'm in no rush and will take my time until I have a clear picture as I don't want to destroy the aesthetics that make the CBX so cool. That's the part that makes it difficult.
Haste makes waste and I don't want to screw this up.

If OEM is your short term goal then you are ahead of the game having the OEM exhaust, solid OEM exhausts are getting rare and expensive, the comstars it's has now are from an 80, being a 79 it should have the mat colored side covers but the rest looks stock from what I can tell and that is a good looking CBX.

If you decide to mod it, being from OZ you have a lot of aftermarket choices exhaust wise, those SS Bassani replicas are the bomb.

Beautiful CBX, Captain. I love that color and the paint looks to be in excellent shape.

Keep us posted on your progress and put up some more pictures when you can.

Very nice. It has the sport kit for the controls as well - I wish mine did.

As far as side covers go, I always thought they should match the bike, so that's what I did! Wink

Nice! My '82 had crash bars that I removed for aesthetics, but I like those sliders.

Not that you can change this, but the '80 would have a lidded tailpiece and different rear shocks. Most likely a 79 with later wheels. In the picture, front wheel looks smaller than 19"

Nice find, Captain! Did you get it in OZ or did you bring her in from someplace?

The pic isn't super clear,,Look closely and notice what appears to be "Koni" style 2 spring shocks, see how tightly coiled the upper part of the spring is wound? Never saw a stock Honda CBX rear shock spring that tightly coiled, nor a black upper body . .

Leads me to think the rear shocks are aftermarket,, at least from what I see, they don't appear to be stock Honda CBX shocks . . .

Nope, it's a 79 with 80 wheels. Found it here in Auckland NZ which is about 9-10 miles away from where I live (don't know why some of you think I'm in OZ). Australia/OZ is another country that is across the Tasman Sea about 1800 miles away.
The picture is misleading and it is shadow and angle that makes the shocks look as they do. They are all OEM chrome, no upper black body and are the correct OEM shock.

Sorry, Captain, I need to start reading the IDs more thoroughly. For whatever reason, I thought you were in Australia. That actually triggered my question, because I know of several CBXes that went to Australia from the U.S. recently

Geez, no wonder you aren't a Phillip Island regular. I had to go look at a map because for some reason I thought Australia was just a short ferry ride away - like 50 miles of water, give or take. Not only that, I thought NZ was up where New Guinea was. Embarassed

At least Australia had the foresight to situate Phillip Island in the general direction of NZ.

You guy's need to get out and travel a little more.................... For the record NZ is down in the southern hemisphere, 1800 miles directly east of Australia. There are no "Ferries" from NZ to Australia as it takes 3 hours by air to get there. You cannot swim it !!!!!

Nice place to live as there is only 4 million people so it is empty compared with most countries. Temperate climate 6 thru 28 degrees (winter/ summer) in the north. Fantastic scenery and outdoors, no terrorists, no social unrest, shootings, or anything else negative for that matter. It's not perfect but it's certainly got a lot going for it compared to most. All in all a safe and rewarding part of the world to be.

Captain

My brother vacationed in New Zealand and the Cook Islands a decade or two ago. He came back raving about how wonderful both places were. I asked him where the Cook Islands were, and he replied "east of New Zealand" so I asked him where that was and he said "east of Australia". I looked the Cook Islands up on a map, and they were a dot in the middle of the Pacific. That ended my geography lesson.

The longest distance I drove to race was to Daytona, which was 1800 miles one way from where I live. I only went a couple of times because it was a heck of a long trip on land, but a piece of cake compared to going anywhere by ship at a whopping 20 knots or whatever. I couldn't tell you how many times I've been asked if I fly in to my races all over the U.S. I tell 'em no; they won't let me take my bike as carry on.

Back to the thread's original topic - I have two red '79 CBXs. I bought one new and it still looks great. The other is a 'project', but not as nice as yours. I had to buy another frame for it as the previous owner had looped it and bent the livin' bejeezus out of the whole back of the frame. It runs good and looks okay, but sits in the garage awaiting it's turn for attention. Too much else for me to do, like work, to spend the time on it that I want. I like riding them, though.
