So, as some of you know I was on a quest for a vf1000r, which almost happen. Guy got cold feet with the sale. http://www.cb1100f.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=73103
however CL popped up a second place finisher for $600 bucks w/title...all the fairings are included just not pictured. I guess I have a winter project. Carbs are wrapped in plastic...hasn't run in 8 years.

This is the kind of thing I wouldn't post about until the deal was done. lol Too many people more than happy to be trolls and nab it out from under you. Too many sellers more than happy enough to sell it out from under a deal, too.

I thought about that too...however I'm a man of my word and we shook hands with the agreement that he gets the title and I'll pay his full asking...if he goes behind my back and sells to someone else, well I guess it was meant to be. I'm not feeding my kids with buying old bikes so its all good |

Well I jinx it...guy wants $1000 now...he has gotten a ton of calls someone offered him $1000...i would have to match it. I offered $800 and he said he No, that was going to re post on CL for $1000. Oh well. I guess a hand shake and verbal commitment mean nothing now a days. |

Your handshake may certainly mean something but obviously the sellers handshake means crap. Hope it was not someone on this forum that went behind your back. |

That sucks!! I had a similar situation happen to me years ago on a Honda CR500R. The rich kid selling it was asking $1K for it. I show up, take it for a quick spin down the street, I don't dicker on the price and give him a hundred to hold the bike until I go to the bank the next day and get a trailer.
He gives me a hand written receipt for the hundred with $900 owing on pick up.
I call the next day to set up a time for exchange of the money and bike and he tells me the bike was stolen out of his garage during the night...
He obviously got a better offer. When I said I was coming over to get my hundred back, he wouldn't let me come to his house. I had to meet him at his
familiy's business. I called the police to see if they had received a stolen motorcycle report from his address, and they said no.
It's hard to trust anyone these days.
Good luck with that bird. $1K is still a killer deal if you get it with the ownership.
Cheers!

The bike has been sitting for 8 years outside...not covered. 40k miles. Missing some small pieces here and there...Not sure if there is engine damage etc...Tried to talk some sense into him...still wanted 1k. I just cant stomach that unless I was planning to part it out...which i would hate to do. |

Personally I wouldn't even talk to that guy anymore. If he's willing to bump the price $400 on you overnight he's obviously willing to screw you over on something else. My guess is there is more story to the bike that he's letting on to.
Sounds like a good one to just move past. Keep looking, something else will come up.

That sounds like good advice!! I didn't realize the bike had been sitting outside for 8 years. On that note, I wouldn't give him 1k for it. He may be bluffing about the other offers. |

Something else I've found from personal experience....get it in writing. Verbal contracts don't mean squat. I'm sure you're good to your word, Dave, but I'm here to tell you very few other people are. Everyone's out to make a buck, be it by lying, cheating or stealing.
While it may not be in stone, a written receipt gives you a little more leverage. You hold the right to sue in the worst case (not that something like this would be worth a court case).
Just my experience after many screwings.

I think the bike had something else going on...I'm over it now. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I blame it on Halloween 10/31/13...something strange in the air. |

Good lesson, don't post it hear or anywhere else until you have it on the truck and on the way home . Maybe it was the best thing to happen not knowing the condition |

And we won't stoop to his level and all make offers on this bike, plan to meet him somewhere, then never show up. We are all better than that. |

When money has exchanged (most of the time to hold) I write out 2 receipts Signed by both and dated, what the money is for, vehicle info, registration and vin# and insurance company, policy # if insured. People then really wonder if they want to play any games with all the info I have and how serious I am. I have been screwed before after the deal was supposedly done.
Have not had a problem since, even two times when some else upped the anti. I asked the one gentleman were his local Magistrate office was.
I got the bike. |

I know it sucks when a deal goes south like that, but I've learned to be patient. If it's meant to be, it will happen. I can promise you that. |
