A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a CB1100F motorcycle

when he spotted a well-known heart surgeon in his shop.
The surgeon was there, waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his bike.
The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey, Doc, can I ask you a question?"
The surgeon a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up,
wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out,
fix 'em, put 'em back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I get such a small salary and
you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"

The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic...

"Try doing it with the engine running."

Except for the fact that it isn't true. The heart is stopped while all the blood flow is routed to a heart/lung machine.

A penguin takes his car to a mechanic. While he's waiting he goes into an ice cream parlour across the road and has an ice crean sundae.
When he goes back to pick up the car the mechaic says "looks like you blew a seal"
"no" says the penguin, " must be a little bit of ice cream?"

OK , this is a true story : I was working at a Suzuki
shop Many years ago and a friend was working on a
GS 1000 on the lift next to mine. I noticed he was paying
very careful attention to the shop manual while testing
the alternator but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary
until he threw down the test leads, backed away and
yelled a long string of profanities at the bike ! I stopped
and asked "what the hell is wrong with you ?" as he's a
very mild mannered guy. he said calmly " look at the
manual." I went around the lift as he pointed to the
sentence that read " make sure the alternator is properly insulted" I couldn't work for about 20 minutes !

And for the fact that the mechanics patient can't die.

When I worked field service, I use to say the same thing. The only difference between me and a surgeon was the fact that if the surgeons patient dies, he moves on to the next, I have to stay on till mine is running again

The difference between a mechanic and a surgeon is that the mechanic gets all the parts back in and has the right number of tools on the bench as when he started.

True, but once the job is started, the Doc can't just stop working Friday at 4, go for a beer with his buddies and re-start working on it monday at 8..He can't even stop for a piss.
The damage to the blood, through the bypass machine is quite bad for your blood, unlike the oil in the shop catch pan, so the time in the HL machine is kept to a minimum.

That and the human body is WAY more complicated than a engine, though they are similar, none are identical, parts are for the most part non-interchangable. (though advancments in tissue matching is getting better)
The mechanic doesnt have to ensure that his engine is sedated, so it can not feel, or remember anything, and doesnt have to worry about it waking up or becoming brain dead.
Or having to explain to a wife/husband, son/daughter mother/father, that he failed..

I think doctors are due the respect they deserve..

If you can't fix it with a hammer, it is an electrical problem
