Hey, new to this site. Going to look at a 900f on Tuesday. They're asking 2000 American for it. The bike is at a harley dealer. Haven't seen it, only pictures. Looks pretty nice, what do you think??

If it's at a Hardley dealer, act like your not really interested in the bike. Offer him a grand to get that Jap thing off his showroom floor!! Wink

Good luck,
Chris

If it's at a Harley dealer they're asking too much.

It's part of the culture and lifestyle you sign up for with them.

Don't forget your $35 genuine "motorclothes" bandanna while you're there! Want some
Harley pajamas for the kids, or some leather panties for the old lady? You'll all look really cool!

Sorry for the rant, but my last visit to a Harley dealer the sales person was extremely
arrogant and put out by the fact that I wasn't there to a buy a $20,000 bike on the spot.
To top it off, he didn't know shit about the features and specs of the different models
but he was ready to close the deal by offering to "throw in a lid". The whole experience
was just absurd.

Good luck finding the right bike!

Tom

OK you guys, enough Harley bashing. I've been to many HD dealerships and haven't come across any ornery personnel. Perhaps they can smell a HD hater when you walk in.

Maybe I'm getting old but the last thing I expect to find when I walk into a big motorcycle dealers is someone who actually has any interest in the bikes, let alone 'talking' with potential customers!

Any bike in a dealers is going to have a profit margin factored in - unless that margin is justified to you by some exceptional quality (originality/extreme low miles/expert modifications) then you'll find a cheaper deal in a private sale somewhere else....maybe not close to you which is perhaps another "cost" to figure in when comparing to another deal...

What's it doing in an HD dealership and what's the history they have.....

Chances are it belongs to one of the salesmen or mechanics that picked it up, cleaned it up, tuned it up and is trying to make a quick buck.

The Harley dealers around here do that quite often. Funny thing though, all (or a large majority) of these guys that have the "Harley attitude"
now began riding on a Honda, Kawi, Suzuki etc years ago. Now the've bought into the lifestyle to be "accepted" and need a $20,000 acceptance fee. I stop in once in awhile to see if there is something of interest there.

I have had my share of Harleys and ride today with a bunch of guys, a few with Harleys, on my Shadow. These guys are all good and low key but they are in the late 60's early 70's and just like to ride. Doesn't matter who or what is riding next to them.
The ones with the attitudes seem to be the guys in their 30's and 40's and they are the ones on the street that are looking down their noses at ANYTHING that is NOT HD or HD motor clothed. It's sad really. I don't need to pay a $20,000 fee to enter a club, any club.

Print out this page and take it with you - http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/retail/1981/honda/cb900f-supersport/69184/.

It shows the dealer retail price of a 900F at $1510. That assumes it's in excellent condition, and 'fully reconditioned', whatever that means. Either way, the frist question I would ask is what makes this bike worth $500 more than the book value?

Truthfully, if it's not perfect, I'd start subtracting from the price for each thing I could find that's not 'excellent'. Then I'd start asking about a warranty, and I understand the factory warranty is expired, but how about a 30 or 60 day warranty from the dealer? If they balk, ask them about service. Can you even bring it back to the Harley shop for service in the future if need be?

The end result is, what's in it for you to pay a premium price for this bike? By all means go, look at the bike, and see what you think. Who knows, they might have a good reason for the asking price, and the bike might be worth it.

Also, use the argument that it will be very hard for you to find decent service. They will not work on it after they sell it and most Honda dealers will not either.
