I prepped my 82 CB900F tank for painting this weekend. I took the silver paint code NH104MU to my local paint shop and low and behold that number doesn't exist in their computer. I then went to an auto repair place to see if they could mix me up a pint.......nope no such paint code. So I started to search the internet, hey I found someone who sells it "color rite" $86 a pint plus shipping so that is not going to happen.
Does anyone know an automotive paint code that is close to the NH104MU? or I will have to take the paint shop a sample to see if they can match it. |

There is another thread on this topic a few days old. I am having the same problem. My painter is a "Dupont" shop. The Dupont distributor has not yet been able to cross reference this paint code. Another forum member produced a PPG equivalent. Code is PPG-37915. I talked to the PPG distributor and he said that this is an old paint system "Universal Base". I know it's a basecoat/clearcoat system, but not much more than that. He said that this system is not very popular anymore, but they can still source it. If you are painting yourself, or if you painter uses PPG, then this appears to be an option. My painter isn't sure if he can work with it, as all of his other materials (i.e. reducers, clear coat, etc) are Dupont, and there is no way to say if the are compatible. In the meantime I am still searching for an answer. I am sure that among the legions of silver cars out there, one is pretty much spot on for Pleiades Silver, but as I have no original sample to compare to, I am stuck at the moment. If anyone knows of a "modern" automotive color code that comes close to replicating the Honda color, please speak up. I am aware that Colorite is out there, but they are expensive, and again the painter I am working with isn't happy with using a non-Dupont paint.
Thanks, and good luck! |

Any paint shop using PPG paint should have a paint analyzer that will allow them to match original paint. I have never used original Honda paint codes as they mean nothing to the general paint industry. Also Honda used a base coat under the top coat that affects the finished look and that does not spell out in the Honda paint code. best way to go is to match the paint. |

Yes that is the best way to get a color match. Paint ain't cheep these days hope you know that before you get them to mix it for you? |

I called the local paint shop and gave them the PPG-37915 code, it came back as a gold color.
I wouldn't be too concerned to get an exact match if I was painting the entire bike but I am only repairing and painting the tank so it has to be at least close.
I am going to drop off a side cover at the paint shop and they are going to try their best to match it.
I kick myself for not buying the brand new tank that was on ebay this week, it sold for $293. By the time I repaired and lined the tank I had, buy the paint and the decals I will be well over $300 |

I agree that matching an existing sample of paint is the easiest. My problem is I have no sample available - my 900F had previously be repainted (more than once) and badly.
I would like to get close. I can walk into any paint shop and pick a "silver" out of a book of 1000 1" paint chips, but want to hopefully come at least close. How warm/cold of a silver, how much metallic, etc. Thats why I am looking for a code that means something using the current crop of automotive paints . . . |

I spent last Friday looking through countless paint books at my local autopaint dealer. I found a real close match "2012 Chrysler code GSA Tech Silver"
I painted the tank this afternoon and am very happy with the colour, I will see how it looks once the decals and clear is applied later in the week. |

Chris, I didn't realize you are still having an issue matching the silver paint. As long as you're not in a hurry, maybe we could meet up at your painter's with my nos silver tank and get it scanned. I wouldn't be able to do it for a few weeks as family commitments are keeping me busy. Let me know. |

I finished painting the tank on my 900F project. I was very happy with the silver paint I found and hopefully the Chysler code I supplied helps others when it comes time to match the silver paint. I applied the new decals yesterday and then cleared the tank this afternoon. Wet sanding and buffing and it will be ready to mount back on the bike.
