new to me --- CB900

I joined this forum about a week ago as i was about to buy a 1983 CB900 F2D, well glad to say i collected it this morning. its a runner but needs some tlc to get it back on the road, paint work is original on the fairing,tank,sidepanels and tail fairing. paint it is a pearl white metalic and deep red. the bike also has a motad 4 into 1 exhaust fitted. so it looks like a good wash and brush up a couple of tyres, and the calipers sorted as they are seized at the moment and hopefully it will be back on the road again. pics to follow.

Thanks for the welcome. heres a couple of photos of the bike, needs a bit of work also got to strip the motor to find out what's wrong as there is a clattering noise at tick over from the starter motor area got an idea it may be the primary shaft, but will find out when i strip the motor, i am going to renew the cam chains and tensioners while it's stripped down as better safe than sorry Rolling Eyes

She looks complete & tidy enough...but wonder what's the story with the missing grab bar and rails?

Our Colonial Cousins will love the wheels and rear sets Very Happy

The clatter a tick over that goes away as you rev could be the primary chain (hydraulic tensioner).

Have you gone to the Dave Silver website to price out the parts for the motor refresh yet?

Hi Pete just had a brief look on Silvers website seen cam chains and primary chain (after market) but did not see a primary chain tensioner, but i'll worry about them when i have stripped the motor and had a look at the internals hopefully it's not to bad. I did not realise that there was a grab bar and rails missing Embarassed

i know that the covers for the storage compartments in the fairing are missing and i suppose these are unobtainable now. Not to worry maybe i will find some on Flea bay on day Rolling Eyes

Dave, Don't be in a hurry to strip your engine down. The clatter is likely to be loose bolts and/or bad springs on the starter clutch. This is an easy fix. No need to even drain the oil. Just put the bike on the center stand a remove the left covers to access the starter clutch.

Headless is right (though mine didn't get any quieter above tickover) and its well worth a check over anyway! I'd not rush into an engine strip for the timebeing...just eliminate the obvious and give it a good service so you can use for rest of summer before tearing down completely!

Your bike is on the cover of the Haynes manual for the model IIRC

Not sure about covers for the fairing pockets, weren't they little "bags" like this CMS website for fairing pockets which also gives you another source for spares (though expensive with euro/pound exchange rate at the mo) and an indication of availability...NLA as you expected!

Hi Dave Welcome
I wouldn't rush to strip the motor either,this motor is well known for a rattle at tickover and
will normally disappear with revs up and under load,just run the bike for the summer.
The fairing was fitted with pockets/bags fastened with two press studs at each end and with a zip
down the side.

I removed the leftside cover to check the starter clutch and yep the 3 bolts that hold the starter clutch were very loose so they have been re-tightened to the correct torque, could not see anything else amiss so i refitted the cover and started the engine, it made less noise than before but there is a knocking noise from the clutch which i couldn't hear before which does go a little quieter when the clutch is operated i know that these motors are a bit lumpy when the carbs are out of ballance but this is noisier than that, so thats the next job have a look at the clutch as it's been standing idle for over 18mths or so. Once you get the carbs synched, the clutch will quiet down.

Hi Dave and welcome
As others have said do not rush to strip the Motor
These engines are well known for rattles on tickover,best to balance the Carbs,adjust the Camchains,be carefull with the front tensioner bolt as these are easily stripped, and then wind the tickover up a bit,most noises disappear when the Clutch is pulled in.
Also re the starter clutch,these bolts need loctite on them and doing up with a 12mm 6 point socket.
Looks like a nice Bike and they are good to ride with the Fairing
