It is not the riding part, they are still a decent bike.
It is the trying to make a modern bike out of an old one.
There is effectively no aftermarket support,it dried up 20 yrs ago. The bike was not that popular to make faster even back then. My guess main reason was the head would not come off with the engine in the frame. You can get the head off a Z-1 in about 10 minutes in the frame. The Z-1 was much simpler as well to work on.
So even today some 35 yrs after it was new,you can buy brand new billet cams for the Z-1 for around $250 and be laughed at to get them for a Honda, never mind it will be more than $600 for a hard weld regrind. Same for pistons and everything else.
For the same reason you do not see a Model T Ford cruising the highway or a Triumph Bonneville, but they do show up at car shows.
It is just sad. The prices for the dwindling parts compared to the falling prices of bikes made recently pass each other on the money scale. I have seen ZRX 1100/1200 Kawasakis in the $4000 range and I mean nice clean bikes and this is close to just a big bore and set of cams,or special carbs.
You basically ride it for what it is and maintain it. If it is apart you improve it,ie stock pistons cost more than a Wiseco kit,but no real gain to take apart a bike that still runs decent. |

My cb750f is just cheap transportation, a $1000 bike that I will fix when it needs it if it costs less than $200 or so, I wasn't looking specifically for a cbf when I got it and if it costs more than it's worth to fix it then it's time to look for something else. |

I don't know call me stupid crazy what ever I love both of our 9's and would not trade the in for something else. there is just something about these bike's that has struck a cord with me. we thought about buy a new bike for me a couple of years ago but I was persistant with 9 and with the help of other's from this site I got her to look good and run good.
I don't need the high end speed or the high tech stuff. I am quite content crusing aroud and having fun with my 9. I think after all I have been through with her this year there is a bond if you want to call it that.
But whatever it is she will always be with me. |

I probably have as much time on these as anyone, but sometimes I do desire new stuff that I don't have to wrench constantly.
(Maybe Miss Aprilia will sell me her TUONO!) |

An Aprillia would be nice or even a Bomoto.
Still would keep and ride my nine |

I've got a ton of money in a farkled up 2007 FJR1300 that I bought new. The custom seat cost more than the original purchase price of my 1100. Very comfortable, fast, handles well for a bike its size. First valve adjustment is at 26k. Runs like a swiss watch.
Yesterday I got the chance to play hookie far a couple hours, what did I do? I took my F and tore the snot out of blood mountain. I need some new toe sliders for my boots.
To paraphrase Tina Turner, "What's logic got to do with it". |

All you have to do is meet Nitro..once...and you'll know who is crazy..
Besides, who need to change these old bikes...not me..
They work fine, right out of the box...and have been doing so for 26 years now... |

What really gets me is:
1983 CB1100F - 108 hp. I belive this is the stated HP.
1998 - 99 CBR900RR - 113 HP.
Ah - Progress.
Now can anyone measure the comfort index?
Don't get me wrong. I love both machines.
I know my choice for a ride of over an hour. |

Well, to be fair...
1983 CB1100F 586.4 lbs
1998 CB900RR Blade 396.8 lbs
Both according to Bikez.com |

Well it helps to remember that my 1100 had been sitting outside under a canvas cover for 8 years when I got it. Lets just say I didn't pay a pristine price for it. It has had a lot of restoration since then.
I would still like to know however how my brother got it into and out of the back of his pickup with two flat tires and the brakes locked up. I'm still impressed. |

NO excuses! just get something that wasnt made in the dark ages you guys! These things have parts in them made of wood !!
OK.. I did go shopping yesterday....seems the $$$$$$$ sent me home again empty handed..although I do want that nice fz1 te and the 08 leftover vfr i rode...But turns out i only bought gas today.....for my relic..
Seems it comes down to buying that new bike or having enough cash to travel a lot with the old ones...hmmmm
Hows this for relic-ing..will be off to Vancouver island for 4 days tomorrow with wife on the old relic, as its my 2 upper now, then will be off to MB solo after that, and I expect to do the 2000km non stop as usual. Not taking the vfr as the tires have just enough left for my august trip and thats all..so...back on my relic
I still want to hear who took my advice and got a new bike today? |

Nitro I recently bought a low mileage 98 VFR. try one you'll like it. Some think it's crazy but it fits right in with the 2 7s, 3 9s, one 11, fj11/12 and the little xs400 |

I'd love to have a newer bike--a Blackbird would be nice--but on my pay, it ain't gonna happen.
Of course, I'd still keep the 900F, 'cause I'm nuts. TB |

Thought I could be happy poopin around on old XS650's which are fun and great for looking around while riding, but when the 11's showed up I hadda have em. Been trading seat time between the stock exhaust one and the Yoshi. Strike me dead but I love the
brat brat look me look me sound.... Just not always. And yes I still want MORE HP Some things never change. Seems I'll never grow up, the urges just aren't as constant. |

Don't try to rationalize what we do with our F bikes.
Why do people build these?

A wise man once said "With absolute power comes absolute responsibility".
I wouldn't trust myself on a new crouch rocket. I've ridden a blackbird it's too easy/effortless to go fast and I need my licence. When I was buying my 900f it was my first "big" bike and I had images of wrapping myself around a tree on anything faster.
I knew it didn't stop or turn like a new one so I didn't try.
Since owning my F I have tried other bikes all newer, My brothers 1200 sportster is a buzz but nothing instils more confidence than getting back on the old girl. I can keep up with many newer bikes........ and I can ride all day.
With this old bike my wife encourages me to get her registered and doesn't appear to mind me going for a ride on "my old man's bike" Little does she know.
I don't think she would be so keen if it looked like a racing bike especially when you see all the motorcycle deaths and the bikes that they generally happen on.
I once pulled up in front of the local coffee shop and there was a small crowd gathered around the new CBR600 they heard me coming and it wasn't long till the young pup had been forgotten with the crowd now gathered around the old warrior.
And finally maintaining these bikes is as much of a hobby as riding them. If you don't like that side of it go and buy a Hyosung.
