This is me at Roebling Road 1985,18yrs old,big guy holding the bike is my buddy big mike.I'm the skinny guy w/the mullet .We bought the bike off a pro racer named Larry Shorts, this bike was 3rd in the 83 pocono F-1 national(used to be his superbike but they went to 750 & 83 & he built another bike for that).
What a mistake to learn how to roadrace on this beast!.

WOW! Great photo. It's cool to see something like this and I'm sure it brings all those memories back.
What did you mean by a "mistake" to learn to roadrace this beast?

Meant that i should've started on that stock gpz 750 to the left! or a 550 or anything else!
See how the back of that thing is jacked up!.It would turn in like it was going to wash out but then it would catch itself.Scary shit for a novice!.
Ok years later it morphed to 17in wheels, better shocks etc.
As for details,ex factory honda frame,neck deraked & pulled back,Larry had the swingarm made,fox shocks,dymag rear,turbo front.
1123 motor,a bunch of wind!,stock head,31mm cr's(old style),3 mm longer crower rods,lightened crank,no alt/starter |

Oh forgot, goldwing forks, handmade billet tripleclamps, neck is so far back it has almost no steering lock before forks hit the tank.I have a 900f stockframe racer my buddy built in the garage & the difference looks like at least 1 inch. |

Yep that was a fun time, was newly married,w/a baby & it was tough trying to race & have a family on 6 bucks an hr!.
What was really cool was things are fun when you don't know any better.
It worked out good for Larry he needed better equipment cause these things were no match for interceptors.Gotta go to my buddy's stupidbowl party now, more later. |

You think you had a bad time as a novice. I don't know what Larry started on but when I met him in 79-80 he was riding a 6cyl CBX at Nelsons.
I had one of those and they were not a real good handling bike - plus they were huge.
Larry actually did pretty good on the thing - I was with him on the track several times and - trust me - it looked like a wrestling match.
By the way - nice hair

I bought the bike Tryg rode at Daytona, and several tracks in the midwest. They called it Dirty Mary. I fixed it up for the street, and then sold it to Lars.

Why did they call it "Dirty Mary"
In the summer of '87 I bought a 900f that Tryg used to race before the 1100. I wonder if it had a pet name.
I remember watching him race at Hallett around '87-'88. I remember him having that HRC VF750F, a VFR750F and some other really cool bikes . I mostly remember him racing a 600 Hurricane though. I should have some pictures somewhere. I'll have to see if I can dig them up. |

So Tryg has told me. He seems quite occupied helping his son these days.

Tryg never really knew why they called it Dirty Mary. He said it was loud (had a hand bent OMT pipe when I got it) and was black, and was nasty...
Tryg told me liked the F bikes but they were no match for the V4s when they came out. would be cool to see some pictures. |

Hi guys...
Thought you might enjoy this note I got from Tryg after buying Dirty Mary from Stout.
"Hello Eric! So you ended up with ‘ol Mary huh? Good job. The history is as follows. I was a Honda dealer in 1983 and took this bike off the floor to roadrace in the club stuff. It was originally a blue/white/w/red stripes. I broke it in on the street putting about 700 miles or so on it. With minor mods it went to Daytona for its first race in ’83 and won its class(Open superstock) with me riding. From there it won numerous other club races until we decided to hop it up to run open superbike stuff. The original pipe was a hand bent unit, although I think the Supertrapp is way more streetable. We put in some Kaz Yoshima cams, cleaned up the ports a hair, added a 1125cc piston kit, and added the carbs. I had on this bike at one time an RSC total loss ignition and no stator with magnesium covers for both sides of the motor. I also have a set of 31CR Keihin carbs, a close ratio transmission, dry sump system, and a dry clutch all by RSC for the F series bikes. All these pieces are still in my keeping. As only the ignition and the engine covers were used, it’s all new stuff still in the box. Anyway, back to the story. I raced it with the stronger motor and better tuned suspension to a few victorys as I was concentrating more on the new Interceptor 750 for AMA superbike. The motor was plenty strong when I returned it to the street as it had not been thrashed for a whole season. It was such a handful that it became hard not to get busted as it was fast and loud with that hand bent pipe with little baffling. There are subtle mods to the inside of the motor as well so it should last well. I always built my stuff to run endurance races, not just sprints. It looks to me that you are loving the ‘ol girl well. She took me to many a win. The name “Dirty Mary” was coined after a pit tootsie that used to hang around the shop after hours named Mary, and she was fast, mean, and a bit tatty around the edges. Just like a real race bike we thought. Why is it black? I should have left it stock but I thought black looked good at the time. I like black anyway as you can tell with some of my other Honda projects. Check out the “American Flyers” section of December 2006 Cycle World to see my CBX project. It has details linked to “Dirty Mary”. I’m glad you have her, enjoy. Cheers Tryg."
ps...I'm still riding her every chance I get and loving every minute. Martin did a great job putting her together and she's still running strong. All I need is a new rear tire and maybe that speedo conversion kit we talked about
Cheers,
Lars |

Hello Stoutblock,
can you tell me where did those front brake disks come from ? I've got that very same wheel set on a shelf, and I was wondering if the stock disks will fit. [added later] Here's why I believe stock disks will not do:
thanks,

Thoose are EPM mag wheels and I believe the disks are also made by EPM. |
