86 VF750F wheel conversion to CB1100F

good upgrade, ? or bad idea?

i think i can get all the parts ,(swingarm, suspension, etc), its just a matter if its worth it?

i bought the complete VF750F minus all body work its in many boxes, picking it up tomorrow, so i have all the parts and some good friends,, i think i have a Project to build

the wheels look the same ,as the VFR and the brake disks,,, but i didnt see any bodywork

I also think Griz has a set of gold rims like these on his...or at least he did.

After breaking my one-off super-special Dan Gurney 18x3" magnesium wheel at Barber I stuck a rear one (also 18x3") from an '85 interceptor straight in. I don't remember anything being difficult. I used an 1100F front wheel though instead of a 16" front.

The wheels on my 750, although they look similar in style, are not the same as the VFR wheels pictured above. My wheels are magnesium Dymags which are now advertised as the "Dymag Three Spoke Classic" pictured below,..stolen from the Dymag web site.

I would expect that very little re-work will be required to fit these wheels (VFR wheels sets) to the front end of an F bike. Many of the mid 86 wheels share very similar dimensions with those of the F bike chassis in both axle size and brake caliper bracketry. Now,..that's not saying that it will be a dead nuts bolt in,..but it may be very close. A possible down side might be the front wheel's diameter which for many or most VFR's was a 16" dia. unit. I say down side only in that there is the pre-connecption that finding good rubber will be somewhat difficult to source for this wheel diameter. I say that knowing full well that I myself have never gone on the hunt for 16 dia tire stock,...it is just, once again, one of those common lines we throw out here abouts related to tires and wheel sizing. I believe the spec's I found on this 1986 VFR state a wheel size of 16 x 2.5 for the front and 18 x 3.5 for the rear wheel. The rear may also bolt into the stock swing arm of the F bike with little trouble as it has been done before.

As for this VFR.....

.....I'd say yes, there are parts here that may also work should one choose this path. Again your looking at a 16" front wheel diameter, be it an issue or not. I'd believe that much of it will bolt up to the F bike chassis.

Some of you may remember mrmike who drag races a mildly built 1123 motor in a 1100F chassis. He used a VFR tri spoke rear Wheel of 18" diameter to gain both an inch in diameter over the stock 1100's 17" rim (this enabled a drag slick to be mounted) and then he swapped out the front 18" gold Boomarang Comstar for a 18" V-45 Sabre rim of Tri spoke design to somewhat match up the rear wheel look. No major mods to either end that I remember to make this set up work...hmm...maybe had to work the rear brake stay a bit to clear the tire I think? but they did bolt up by degree. May be worth looking at anyway. His drag machine sporting a 900F 39mm front end is pictured here:

I have no spec's to relate about the V-45 Sabre's front wheel size other then it is an 18" diameter piece. It may not be as wide as you'd like though. Shod in drag race rubber it looks rather narrow in the above picture. Mike also lowered the front fender to sit closer to the drag race tire as the tire is a low profile unit. The Sabre rims are also duel rotor equiped, but Mike removed one rotor for weight savings.

All the above commentary is based on loose dated info that I sort of remember. Do your own home work and check the data before you drop your cash on the "easy bolt up" item. I hope this helped somebody rather then confuse the issue.

I use front wheel from VF750 for my front end and the wheel from VF1000 on the back with no problems so far.
Back you'll need the disk also, but all other fit without a problem.

thats good news, i was a little worried about the 16 inch front ,,,
i should have every bolt washer and part from a 1986 VF750F except the seat, tank, front fender, and fairings

thanks for all your input ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i think im going to put the swing arm and the pro link too!!!

I would maybe try and fix the bike... depending on condition. I want a V powered bike again one day.

One thing you might consider is the tyre choices you have on 16" which is not big. I forgot to mention this which can be a problem in the future. Now I find Bridgestone a good tyre choice but I don't know for how long

I had VF wheels on my 900F, in this pic I have a GSXR rear wheel (18x3.5). BT45's are very good tires, 120-80-16 front and 150-70-18 rear.

If its a 750 Interceptor, then talking to Stoutblock is the plan.... He knows these bikes inside and out, ALONG with its OILING and cam pounding issues...

Course all the V-45 designs had cam pounding issues to some degree or another...

So did the early Kawasaki Ninja 900s. They had wash out issues. Thats why you see mostly 17" front rims nowadaze. The 16" were to quirky, & with extremely stiff sidewalls, the tires would wash out without warning under heavy, loaded up cornering...

My Ninj went off a 150+ foot cliff because of the 16" front end... front end washed out w/o warning. More then once, I might add, but I was able to save my arse on those previous times. Twisted Evil

its definetly a VFR i got it today ,, and it did come with the seat and some body work (BONUS)

body work looks like its all there ,, seat needs to be reupolstered,one fork bent , but i have all pieces,, over 2 thousand of them ,,lol
