I recently picked up another rough, but good running 1100F and a PO had gutted the stock exhaust mufflers which were beyond fixing, etc...
I always wondered about making my own system from stock header pipes and this was my chance to give it a go...
Here's a video clip showing the 1st version my experiment...Stock 1100F headers with Old School appearing M-4 mufflers (eBay auction )...
The sound is clearer and much better in person than in the video, but the deep throaty sound really rings my chimes as the clip demonstrates....
I did a test run with this system on my red 1100F, but it will be incorporated into an 1100F that is under construction...More on that later!
Performance seems much stronger low end and it keeps pulling strong until it slams the tach to redline, etc..
Ground clearance seems a non issue anywhere...

Sorry Papa, maybe its the audio on the clip, but I think it sounds muddy, almost like listening to a stero with a torn speaker. |

Looks great! I bet it sounds much cleaner in person, but I also think it sounds great on the video. How did you attach the mufflers? Welded them? |

Sound isn't too bad on my 1500 watt hifi, a bit of wind rumble, but the throaty sound comes through...

Here are some stills... The "look" is definitely growing on me...
The sound on the video is so not accurate..I just lit it off again and is is throaty and crisp... I guess I'll leave it on for riding with Peter & Grump Monday &/or Tuesday and get their 1st hand opinion...
Gene... You're right about the balance... And Ray...Yes, I'm going to adjust the timing chain(s)...

That growl at idle sounds really cool... When you rev it, it sounds good too, but not as nice as when it's idling...

My stock exhaust is running on it's last leg, want to keep the 4-2 ain't seen anything mfg'd that looks good.

1) I used large pipe cutter leaving as much of the header pipe as I could manage.
2) Found something I liked on eBay...These were not cheap, but I had a high degree of confidence that I would like them and they would do the job.
3) Using my parts bike, I mounted the header as normal, and loosely bolted the mufflers to the peg step using the existing tabs on the mufflers leaving the head pipe hanging below and overlapping the mounted stock headers...
3) Trailered the whole bike to my local welder with instructions to cut the mid pipe on each muffler to the proper length and weld them to the header...The head pipe diameter was approx 3/16" larger, but the weld filled rthe gap...
4) After handing him a $50, I trailered the bike home the next day...
I then removed the whole thing from the parts bike and installed same on the red bike for testing... The "Custom" tolerances were really tight so I had to loosen the peg steps on the red bike so everything could move around...Once in place all tightened down nicely... I hope it fits the bike I'm building, but it's just another 1100F so I'm optomistic...

OK Luke, I will see about being there on Monday if I can. I have been working again temporarily at Marcelo's while he is out of the country because of a death in his family. So I am helping out at the shop where I can while he needs me. |
