hard to stop being an a-hole when your bike will go fast, rarely breakdown, comfortable to ride and last forever.... and maintain value. see? another a-hole. |
haa.... ya well...
Ya Beemer owners faking make me sick. They are easily the most pompous, Ive been snubbed by other Beemer owners. Furthermore, more Harleys wave at me than Beemers.
The next time some of those Beemer guys give me looks when they see my dented tank, Im just going to set down my GS on the crash bars, right next to their garage queen. |

There is nothing wrong with HD motorcycles. You just have to accept them as they are. It would be enjoyable to own one and to ride it around.
There is nothing wrong with modern sport bikes. You just have to accept them as they are. It would be enjoyable to own one and to ride it around.
In comparison to cars, I would compare a modern HD to a 1932 Ford Highboy roadster hotrod. I would like to own one, and it would be enjoyable to drive around.
A modern sport bike is comparable to a new Honda S2000. It is probably about the same price as a nice 32 highboy. I would like to own one, and it would be enjoyable to drive around.
Can you compare the 32 to the S2000? No…

There is nothing wrong with owning an early 80’s Honda F bike. You just have to accept them as they are. It is enjoyable to own one and to ride it around.
In comparison to cars, our bikes are like a 1971 Datsun 240z. Our super Fs are like a Z with webers, modern wide rubber and wheels, and improved suspension. I would like to own one, and it would be enjoyable to drive around.
Now can’t we just all get along, enjoy, and ride around? |

Do I hate Harley Davidsons? No. I hate the posers that go out and buy them thinking they are cool. And all the people who think that the HD is the only REAL bike. They are fooling themselves. They are slow, heavy, loud, (Fine if they made power), and 98% of the time they are ugly. I find myself pulling up to lights with them often. Had a guy on his decked out chopper try to race me the other day. He took off from the light like a bat out of hell thinking he was fast. Then commented on my bike being slower than he thought at the next light. I didn't know we were racing and told him that I am not even going to waste my time. My 27 year old 750cc bike could have blown his bike to hell. And if not in the straight, then it would have in the first corner.
How many 27 year old Harley's do you see on the road?
I don't see many. And when I do see an old Shovel Head/Knuckle head, I admire it a bit. Knowing the great amount of work it must have take to keep it going. Knowing that the person on it, is a real biker.
I am SICK AND TIRED OF YUPPIES BUYING A HD. They have no reason to own a bike at all, they are dangerous, and annoy the shit out of me just to talk to most of them.
Harley has sold the amount of bikes that they have thanks to shows like Orange County Choppers. They are more popular than they should be.
I will never love Harley's. They are down on my list way below Kawasaki's.
And it's not because I am not the type to buy a cruiser. Hate is a strong word. But if I buy enough other bikes, and I have the money I too might own one. But I highly doubt it.
The mentality that these people have should be embarrassing to them.
Now. I have ridden with guys on Harley's and I will again. Many of them are good people. But you won't see me ride next to a guy that just bought his bike for the image. I would rather diffuse a ticking time bomb. Or shove rusty razor blades under my fingernails. Or give myself paper cuts on my eyeballs.
If it were not for the support of dumbasses wasting money for image, Harley would possibly be out of existence.
Not to mention, many times when I am riding on a nice road, I find myself stuck behind traffic. Now I know that I have a 50% chance that it is a large truck slowing traffic down, or some group of Harley riders going 10 under the fucking speed limit. Many times I have been stuck behind them myself. I hate that with a passion.
The more I see Harley's doing something that pisses me off the more i want to start loathing them. But no. I can't blame them. Just the people that keep buying them. |

I was just pointing out that I had really enjoyed a great ride, on a great day, under great conditions. After returning home I was quite satisfied with the whole experience.
I later saw and overheard a conversation between an old harley guy (in all his brand name gear) and a young lady. I couldn't help wondering if the praise from the babe had him thinking the same thing. |

What the hell is wrong with you?
That is a well thought out, well executed, intelligent piece of writing! Not only that, you make several valid points that diffuse the entire debate! That leaves us with nothing to bicker about....what the hell!!

I went to a Kawasaki dealer the other day. Do they name their bikes something other than Ninja this and Ninja that? Seriously, I'd love to own an Eddie Lawson replica from 1982 or an original Z1. |

It is funny how the fact these issues seem to dominate the two wheel crowd more that the 4 wheel crowd. Granted there are still the age old Ford vs. Chev. vs. Mopar crowd. Also the anti Japanese crowd. Mostly the 4 wheel guys like all cool cars.
This is the way I am. I like all cool bikes and cars. I could care less who the rider and/or driver is.
I think a HD can be cool. I think a Ford flathead V8 can be cool.
Would I ride across country on a HD? No...
Would I install a flathead in a Ford Taurus for commuting? No...
The machine does not make the person. The problem is that some people think it does. Riders (drivers) think they are judged by their machine. Observers, will judge others based on their machine.
Remember, the jerk that rides a HD was a jerk before he mounted it.
The same jerk riding a Honda is still a jerk.
A great guy who chooses a HD does not suddenly become a jerk...
So let’s set an example here in our website and accept all machines for what they are and not be judgmental about the owners based on their purchasing choices in life.
In my case. Feel free to laugh at my 2001 Ford Taurus with 128K miles. I do.
Would I love to own a new Corvette? You bet! But then I would have to spend too much concern over other people’s opinion of my endowment.
With the Taurus it is obvious I am secure in such matters… |

lots of interesting food for thought here......seperate from the "32 highboy" type of Harley is the Porsche inspired Vrod. It is one smooth powerful enjoyable bike to ride. I would prefer my F for a variety of reasons. It handles better stops better accelerates on par or better than the Vrod but the Harleys riding position is great for a leisurly cruise on a nice day. Would I like to own one (like Stouts Corvette comment) - why yes I would. Will I? Hell no. The 25K price tag up here in the great white north makes it cost prohibitive........... |

When my wife and I were younger (and a lot sillier) we decided to take a naked midnight drive in a 300ZX she'd bought home from the Nissan dealership she worked at. T-Tops out we went cruising around for about an hour before we drove back home and ran back into the house. We laugh about it now, but what the hell would we have done if the car had broken down .
Is it spring yet? |

No. And papa has a good reason to own one. And I say that it's a great way for him to spend his money.
Not calling people jerks because of what they ride. calling them stupid for thinking it makes them cool. And when that is the only reason they get one, then they can ride off the nearest cliff opposite of my direction. |

OK, RF - now I can make some more sense of your view. I do agree. But in its own way, it applies to a hell of a lot of riders/drivers (come on, who has never ridden along looking at their own reflection in the shop windows?) |

Human nature...interesting. Got my first bike at age 17, in the late sixties, a 250 Suzuki 2 stroke twin.
At the time you just never saw Harleys in Australia, except for old ex army bikes.
Most of the big bikes were Triumphs, Nortons, BSAs and some of their riders refered to our Jap` bikes as
'jap crap'.
Then the mighty CB750 was released and it blew everything else away.
These days, I would say Harley has probably the biggest % of large touring bikes on the road in Aus`.
Just for the record.. my bike history...250 Suzuki,(fast, but needed cdi ignition)
1954 BSA M21 600 single side valve(80kph top, but fun & reliable))
Triumph 650 twin (ex police bike)
Yamaha tx750 (worst motor ever put in a bike)
Yamaha SR500 single(fun & very reliable)
`82 CB750F (JUST GREAT) |

I didn`t bother reading all the posts on this subject before posting a reply. so excuse me if I`m repeating something or missing a point.
Everyone points to the Harley XR750 flat tracker as an icon, which it is , an I luv `em. But the only reason it has no real competition, is because of Harley`s past influence with the AMA.
When the Brits came over to race (50`s), Harley used their influence to try to screw them at every turn. They even had them declared illegal to run when they showed up at Daytona, with no kickstarters on `em. They had OHV motors restricted to 500cc., against their 750 side valves. Race winners were listed as HD or other US brands. If it wasn`t US, it just said "other".
When they were developing a 750 OHV they applied to have the limit lifted. When they found out a HD privateer had already short stroked a Sportster motor to comply, they screwed him too, by delaying the rule change `till they could catch up.
Honda had much success against the XR750. Everytime they got close to winning, Harley applied to have them restricted. Eventually against all this crap, they won the National title, decided enuff was enuff & packed it in.
I don`t hate HDs, I hate what they did to Flat track racing.
They did the same for streetbikes in the late 70`s, early `80`s. They had the US government put import tarriffs on bikes over 750cc, to make HDs more competitive against the Jap imports (in terms of price, `cos HDs were crap!).
Alot of the "metric cruisers" are crap too !. But they can`t win. If they build something original, people say " it`s too Japaneese". If they build something retro, people say "they`re copying HD" !.
The HD "V Rod" is the most advanced bike HD makes ( besides the Buell). And even it is based on a race motor that never won a race!. How many do they sell, compared to the traditional "Big V Twin" ?.
I find it irritating , that HD is held up as the "God" of motorcycling. |

The V-Rod engine also has quite a bit of Porsche R&D knowledge in it. |

remember this:
God I hate harleys.....
My woman and I blasted past a huge group of them on the 1 freeway here in LA completely blocking the entire freeway at 50 mph....motorcycles, CLOGGING THE FREEWAY. It's a disgrace.....
or this:
What do you call a group of Harley Owners with a collective IQ of 120?
Sturgis !
How is a Harley Davidson like a Porcupine?
Both have pricks on their back.
How is a Harley Davidson like an old dog?
If you leave them alone long enough, they'll both mark their territory.
What do you get when you have 32 Harley owners in the same room?
A full set of teeth.
What do you have when you put 10,000 Harley Davidson motorcycles on the bottom of the ocean?A good start.
What is the most common accessory for Harley's?
A pickup truck.
What does a Harley and a hemorhoid have in common?
Sooner or later every asshole gets one.
Why do they have all those Harley billboards along the highway?
So the owners will know how far it is to the next repair shop.
Why do harley riders never ride faster than 50mph?
Any faster and they can't see where the parts fell off.
Why do harley riders chrome all their parts?
It makes them easier to spot on the side of the road.
Why do Harley riders put tassels on the ends of their handlebars?
So they can tell if they are moving! |

Jeeberz I would much rather enjoy my bike than hate someone elses.
And I would rather enjoy myself than worry about whatever somebody else thinks is cool. Life is too fuckin short as it is.
I have some very good friends that ride Harleys. Most of them used to own Japanese sportbikes or Wings. We have been to many bike runs together, and I know for a fact that any one of them would defend me with their life if need be just like I would for them. Some things matter more than what kind of bike you like.
There was only one of my friend's Harleys that ever kept up with my 900 converted into an 1100, but it had to be ridden by his 90 pound wife to do it. |
