I came across a CB 900 that the guy is selling very cheap, only $350, the bike needs a lot of minor cosmetic, but handle bar, speedometer and thank is in OK shape. Engine is still working, electrical charging system isn't working porperly. I'm seriously thinking about buying it a making it a streetfighter project. So I'm looking for inputs from the forum, what should I look for as far as mechanical issues and if anyone had done some similar thing. |

Before everybody starts going crazy, you might want to go to your account and fill in your location. |

There is Assloads of information on this board and enough people with such expertise to help you, with the help of this board, you could build ANYTHING....
Just go buy it! $350?? even if the tank and the exhaust is straight you can make your $$ back from Ebay.
.....and the whole point of filling in the location is so that an F'er near you can come help! People get weird about it around here...

Dude buy it before someone else does. I purchased a 79 for $200 bucks a couple of months ago. It looked rough. But a few hundred dollars later it still looks rough but much better.
Before
Missing entire tail section, ugliest seat in the world, and leaking oil from mor places than I cared to count. No side covers or turn signals
After
About $300 more into it and it doesn't leak oil, has turn signals side covers a tail section new seat new carbs(yes Ray you were right) and no more pods.
So for around $500 I am here Still have a ways to go. New tires paint things like that but I am riding. And before someone suggests I shrink the pics I don't know how to do that!! |

Dood! you were half way to Cafe!! All you needed was a short tail and a different seat and it was ON! aww oh well. I want a 750 Cafe' pretty badly I guess... Someday Im going to steal my K model back from Ray and put the wire wheels back on and Cafe' it all out....
Nice improvement though!! Where did that guy get that seat from!??! Jeez......... |

All done with the location thing, next question, what is the main reason for the battery charging system not to be working, do I need a new alternator or it could be something else. This is tthe only problem so far on the bike. CB 900 |

Most likely your charging rotor is bad and needs to be replaced with a new unit. You most likely don't need a whole alternator but, you do need a part of it. |

The first seat or the second? The first one came on the bike the one that is on there now came from 8ball. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse. |

not to knock Ray but could just be brushes are worn maybe, kinda, could be possible but for 350 hell you could replace the rotor, the stator and if that don't work still sell the whole thing for 700-800 and make your money back. |

The charging system is a fairly simple test. some of which you can do without the removal of anything other than the side panal and checking a few terminals with a multimeter. Do a search on our forums and check out this link, it helped me http://home.earthlink.net/~trinomial/DOHCcharge.html. |

I spent $700 for my 9, 15 years ago. About $3500 later, I wouldnt dream of parting with her.....
Regarding the charging system. That was a major investment when I took the 900 home. Over time, I bit the bullet and replaced, coils, stator, rotor, brushes, pulse generator, solenoid, key switch, plugs/plug wires, battery, AND spark units!!!
1st battery, wasnt a Big Crank, but it was an excellent final addition to the rest.. Now I have a rock solid charging system, and no money to buy gas |
