The guy i bought my bike from says he just puts his helmet over the rear view mirror and walks away.
I always use the helmet lock or take it with.
But i do see allot of people just hanging it on their bikes and walking away.
I suppose i`m not trusting enough but i would hate to lose a helmet.

My look went missing some years ago, but for short periods I set it on the mirror.
if it will be a while and it ain't going to rain I put it on the chicken bars. this helmet has some kinda snap thing that ain't to user friendly hard to open in a rush or panic. so it probably wouldn't walk away.

Its a pain to use the helmet lock, so I pretty much carry mine with me. But thats a pain also so sometimes I just risk it. But they will walk away real easy. If people will steal stereos out of cars without thinking twice to get there crack what do you think there going to do with a $100-$800 helmet just sitting there for anyone to take. There going to go and sell it for $10. Rolling Eyes

If the bike is going to remain in site I put mine on the ground, that way it won't fall anywhere. Very Happy
At work I take it in with me, and when I'm just going into the store for a moment I lock it to the bike with the stock lock.

I take it with me, or lock it on the bike. I cannot afford to loose my Shoei.
I got lucky enough to get it for a great price.

Depends on where I go if I take it woth me.
A few places, I have the person at the door take it. Like in WalMart. I hand it to the greeter, and ask them if they can keep an eye on it. That is easier than locking it on my bike. THe strap is a little short on the D ring side, and it is a pin in the neck to get it on the little hard to reach lock we have on our F's.

One qustion I always have, is where to put my jacket. Question Confused

To hot to wear it while I am not moving. And I hate having to carry it.

I am always using the helmet holder/lock. All of my bikes have one. Those that didn't when I got them, had one installed. I use it, not so much because I am afraid someone would steal it - I like to think nobody would want to wear another person's sweaty lid Rolling Eyes - but because I like to prevent it from falling down and hitting the ground. Cool

Most of the time I just plunk it down on the rearview, but if I'm going out of sight for some time, I'll use the helmet lock. I use a T shaped thing that goes through the D ring which makes it a lot more practical to use.

When I am at work, in the parking garage, I leave it on the bike a lot, but sometimes take it in. Probably shouldn't trust the people I work with any more than someone on the street. There are 1000's where I work, and I don't know most of them Smile

When not at work? I take it in with me.

I don't have a lock for it on my CB750, but I sure like the sound of keeping it secure, if not from theft, from a fall... I think I will get a lock for it after all!

Thanks all, this is exactly the kind of thing that make me like the forums!

i take my helmet in with me when i ride to work. montana has no helmet requirements for adult riders, so usually i dont wear one. when i do, i feel pretty secure using the helmet lock on the bike. i know the stock helmet lock has problems, like its hard to use, can only hold one helmet [unless you are inventive] and wont stop someone from cutting the D ring off the strap and walking away with it.
when i go with other riders, i like to use a short piece of bike lock cable. it is plastic covered so it wont marr, and i can attach a couple helmets, and even lock up my saddle bags or tie in my jacket if i am not going too far. usually in a crowd of bikes, there will usually be a few guys who hang out with the bikes while everyone else is in getting coffee or standing around bullsitting. i dont go to malls unless at gunpoint, and i dont usually go shopping on my bike. Thanks to Griz, I have a usable lock and I use it!! I wear my brain bucket where ever I go on the bike, and armored jacket. When I go inside I stuff the jacket under my back pack that is on my rack. The net is over all of them and my helmet is on the lock with my gloves in my helmet. I figure that if someone wants it bad enough, they have to cut it and they will be missing the D ring. Besides, most people in Montana don't wear helmets...so why would they steal one.

I also take it with me or lock it up. I cannot afford to buy a new helmet because I am spending a fortune on new bike parts getting ready for the winter build. Laughing Rolling Eyes

I had problems with getting the D ring onto the lock too but then I tried it by lifting the visor and reaching through the opening and it is much easier to put on the bike lock.

I hand it to either of my sons (older one or the younger one doesn't matter) if I want it to be dropped for sure......... Razz Really Mad Kill Me

It either gets locked on the helmet holder or I have a 6 foot cable that I run throught the visor opening and then through the sleeve(s) of my jacket and then lock that to the helmet holder.
The cable came with a padlock, bracket and glue and is meant for securing things like a computer. It's made by "Bulldog", go figure! Yes the cable can be cut, so can a chinstrap on a helmet but it's enough to stop or at least slow down the grab and run sphincters.
If I'm around my bike and know that there isn't an issue I usually put it on the ground beside the bike, it can't fall from the ground!

If I have the F, I always take the helmet with me.

I have a Shoei X-11 and even if I lock it on the bike I still have a $65 shield that just pops right off.

Takin' no chances!

I would like to add though, if I'm at some kind of big bike gathering, I have no problems trusting my fellow bikers, so in this case, I just let it sit on the seat. Never have had a problem.

i'll lock mine on the bike if i'm planning on getting the bike again soon... if i'm gonna be somewhere where i'm not gonna be grabbing the bike in the next hour or two (i.e. my apartment, school, work), i'll take it with.

It all depends on the situation. Sometimes I leave the helmet/s on the bike and sometimes they come with us. Like if we ride to the movies, I bring them with us and take up an extra chair in the theater. They come in at the resturant we eat at but any time we are at a bike function or the Rock Store, I leave the helmets there.

He must have used a cheap helmet to just leave it on the bike.

Yup, all depends on the situation. Often it gets left on the seat, never have had a problem. If I am worried about it - same deal - cable with disc lock. Cable goes thru the helmet, up the jacket sleeve, and thru the grab bar. Then I just place the jacket over the helmet, you can't even see the cable & lock. Anything can be stolen if somone wants it bad enough. The idea is to slow them down or make it more trouble than it is worth.
