Now that I have changed my rear sprocket, I'm good for 100mph/160kmh
at 6000 rpm in top gear...
Lately, my cruising speed on the highway is 85 - 100 mph..
My F keeps up with no problem whatsoever.

Holy crap, you really like to get movin'!

I typically only exceed the speed limits by 9 MPH, which means I'm usually doing a max of 74 around here. I rode a CB500k to Montana many years ago, back in the "reasonable and prudent" era. Got'er up to about 115 for a few miles. That's the fastest I've ever gone on a bike, and I only did it that once.

I usually cruise at 130-150kmh on the highway here, I did 220kmh (135 mph) on the autobahn on the speedo of my 900f! that was with mikuni's, dyna and supertrapp, it ran out of steam because of the redline + limiter

I guess it could use a bigger front sprocket, but then again I don't drive that fast every day. I was surprised that it could still reach it's topspeed after 20+ years and it's not a slow bike compared to most modern bikes. however, compared to modern 'sport' bikes it's not fast at all but they don't have that 80's superbike-mojo. Cool

Those were the good ole days...They changed that rule not to long ago, maybe 6 to 7 years.

I like around 80, unless I'm passing people.

" my masreatti does 185, I lost my license and now i don't drive, I stay in hotels and knock out the walls. I have accountants who pay for it all. Lifes been go to me SO FAR."

Californias basis speed law "never drive faster than is safe under the conditions". sounds like reasonable advise. see Intimadators post.

Every so often, there is some discussion on this site about how great it is to go fast. I have never commented before, but I will now. Speed is nice, but getting home in one piece at the end of the day is better. Do I always ride at a safe, reasonable speed? No, I can't say always do, but the more I ride and the more I see and hear, the more time I spend closer to safe speeds. There are many factors involved in crashes, but speed is at the top of the list. I don't think there is much debate anymore about that. And the faster you crash at, the more likely you will be mangled or dead.

Some of you will think that I am just another 40+ guy who is already half dead and doesn't understand. Well, you're right. I am middle age, and have a wife and three teenage kids. And I guess that's what it comes down to for me. If you have no one that would be devastated if you crashed and died, or was seriously injured, then go as fast as you want...so long as you when you crash you don't crash into the side of my mini-van while my wife and kids are driving to the beach and take them out with you...or my neighbour...or my friend.

Anyway, I don't want to preach, but like I said...speed is nice, but save it for the race track - and not our roads and highways. Ride safe guys, and ride another day.

Oh...and for those of you whose usual "cruising" speed is 100 mph, I sincerely hope that you lose your privelege to drive on the roads soon.

Check out Midnight's post above. He said he usually cruises at 130-150 Kilometers per hour, NOT MILES PER HOUR. Big difference. I usually drive with the speed of traffic. Up until someone gets right on my ass. Then I downshift and take off for more personal space and then slow down. My only fear in a crash is being run over, The rest would be my own stupidity. I will air it out if I am on an open road with no traffic around me. But when I come up to traffic, the game is over. Period.

I was not referring to Midnight...I am not familiar with the highways where he lives, and am not talking about the autobahn. I am familiar with the roads around here, and was thinking about weasel in Fonthill Ontario, and others like him.

I like putting an 18t sprocket on the front for highway cruising too. You only really notice the loss of torque at very low speeds, but it seems hard on the clutch if you ride in heavy traffic.

At highway speeds the extra gearing gives you amazing passing power. You can easily maintain that magic 160kph(100mph) if need be, without much effort. This is the best safety feature available for highway riding: the ability to effortlessly leave the cages in the dust, and keep them in the dust. I'll take my chances with speed on an open stretch, rather than obey the speed limit and have ride in a clump with some dip-shit's bumper 4 feet from my rear tire. Razz

My old Interstate faired Custom (1063 w/ cams, MSD, Smoothbores, and lotsa gears) did 135 easily, I did it several times and would back down, but it was still climbing Laughing

I didn't do it... much... but I did over 100 frequently, and right quick like too Twisted Evil

Thanks for the concern there fella !!
But Weasel is alright, don't worry I don't open her up in stupid situations....
I like to avoid the stupid people on the highway.
If you are familiar with our roads then you will agree there is alot of them on there...
For me, speed is an itch I have to scratch!!!

Here we go.

Posted this quote on another thread just last night.
I just got done watching the movie, The Worlds Fastest Indian.
He sums it up well.

"You live more in five minutes on a bike like this going flat out than some people live in a lifetime." -Burt Munro

However, I wanna live multiple times doing it. So I try to keep safe. Nothing too crazy. But I have maxed out my older 750F a few times now. And I think each time I maxed her out it was in places like I-10.
I-10 from Phoenix to Tucson is a straight piece of what seems like endless highway. Easy to see far ahead and open her up.
At the same time I have done 115 in the mountain roads around here in short bursts. That really is living. Cool

OH Man. As the auther of this string i didnt mean to start anything between members. I only have my one personal thing to say about speed and that is it.

I to am a father and a husband. But before i was either i was a human and a man. I think about my wife and my kids every single time i twist my throttle past the needed point. What i do is the same as what everybody does and has done and that is speed once and a while. The fact is only when somebody crashes do we say that someone is "stupid" when in all actuallity we are just beng hippocrites. Becouse it doesnt matter how much we have raced around in the past, what matters is the one time that something out of the ordinary happens this time. Then at this time we get called "stupid" or "irresponsible". But in reality to actually speed once and a while when no one else is around and to have some fun and a little rush is not "wrong"---------- its human.

As far as I'm concerned, somebody that hasn't gone fast and pushed the limits on their motorcycle in speed and handling probably shouldn't be riding one. It's not something you should do in rush hour traffic, but needs to be learned out on a decent deserted road or the track or a safety course. Those skills can save your life. I've been down several times, once seriously, but it was never from running flat out. I hone my skills nowadays in the canyons, usually on the tail of an F... the guys never saw a Custom do that Wink Laughing

The only real problem near me is animals..
last night had 2 racoons run accross my path in 2 separate places..
People are easy, you see them animals are so small, and the little buggers really boogie across the road.
