Forgot to mention this earlier, but for those of you that have "stock" airboxes on your CB1100F or CB900F and were riding in the rain.....

Go under the bike on the RH side, below the battery by the trailing arm you will find (or should find) your air box breather hose. It should have a black cap in the end of it (some people remove them - not good) but anyway, if you have the cap in place - REMOVE IT AND DRAIN THE WATER if you were caught in those Smoky Mountain rainstorms! When I was cleaning my bike this past Sunday after the Hoot (and I mean ALL FRIGG'N DAY) I pulled that cap and at least 1/3 of a cup of water came out of that hose - that's by design - but you DO HAVE TO REMEMBER to clear that hose after riding in the rain.

Just a thought. I know many of you had those "Ricky Racer Pods/Filters" but for those with the stock air boxes...check & DRAIN that hose!!

The plug missing = vacuum leak in the airbox and if you have oil in there it will leak down into your rear tire. Both bad things.

Ohhhh, well I think I had better go find where I threw that plug. I think its in the garbage and long gone, but it might be in one of my many parts boxes. Thanks, and good points.

Should there be suction on the open end of the drain hose? Doesn't the system have a baffle or check valve in it? Don't know, just asking. I know mine is open, so what kind of plug should be used? Newbie just would like to learn. Ray

There's no check valve. Minor suction. It's mostly about the oil draining back into your rear wheel if you have blowby in the engine. You could use a plastic screw. The plug is just plastic.

I haven't ridden in the rain with my F, but looking over my bike the other day I noticed water in that hose and wondered about it. Now I know that I need to drain it/clean it out. Thanks! I thought it didn't look right.

Ok, so I drained the hose today and this is what came out!

Image

HOLY CRUD!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

It smells like old oil, the bottom layer (must be 2-3 ozs.) looks like gas (I don't know if it is) and the top layer (must be another 1-1.5 ozs.) is just some cruddy looking goop.

Yuck.
