This is a shop job.
A guy at work recommended the place, but I just walk in off the street.
The guy who did it does broach welding and has repair part for other bikes.
Just amazed he only charged $20 |

I'm amzed too at the $20 price tag........ .........I thought you were going to say you did it yourself for $20 in materials....aluminum welding scares me.....bbrandt did a similar job on his alt cover .....but he has all the toys and a location to do it in........ |

I welded once like in Jr high. I can "teach" a robot to weld both spot and mig. But I can't color inside the lines, That stuff is all art to me. |

20 bucks to turn on a $3000 plus TIG welder, likely no less than 4 pieces of 3/32" or 1/8" x 36" filler rod, argon, and no less than 20 minutes of prep welding plus the ability to do the job. Can't go wrong at that price.
Did you have to clean up the weld or did he do it for you?
From what I can see a bit of careful work with a file and paper and it will be barely noticeable.
I never throw out any broken aluminum covers, either they can be repaired or they are good for donor parts when you need that piece that disappeared. |

$20?
I, too, originally figured you meant your rig, just your cost for rods, etc. You did well. Remember that shop: for that matter, brag about that shop to anyone who can use its services.
Last year, I had a bike with a bent peg bracket. The wrench-bender up the road said he'd carefully heat & straighten it. He did, & threw in a couple of coats of black paint, after wire-brushing it bare. He asked $5; I gave him $10, & my word-of-mouth advertising.
I do the same, I just realized. Somebody walks in off the street & needs the job done (in my case calibration & repair), I put them in the front of the line, & probably undercharge them. People remember immediate, helpful, inexpensive service. I could charge an amount to justify the hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of the branch's equipment, but I'd rather they remember. It gets us more. TB |

The before pics are how the part went to the shop minus the stator and brushes.
The after pics are how I picked it up the next day. they sand blasted it ac cleand up the welds. what you see is what I got. |
