My battery box is rubber mounted just like everyone elses and I keep it strapped to the battery box door.
Yesterday the module was hot hot when it failed and I sent the crank trtigger too.
My Dyna's are hooked up perfectly according to the books and not just me but I also had my boss and my partner at the shop check my work.
I always have them check my work and I will continue to do so because I hate mistakes and I have made way too many but I aint making the same mistakes over and over again except using aftermarket stuff on my so called hot rod bikes.
This is a fucked up situation and maybe I will get to the bottom of it and maybe I won't.
For now I just want an ignition system that works even if it is bone stock.

SPARK!!!
There's nothing quite like it , and in this case even a teeny tiny stock spark is a much welcomed creature comfort Razz Razz Razz

The dyna units are potted so vibration is unlikely to be a problem.

Potted means an epoxy sort of resin that is poured over the entire internal contents and circuit components and sets hard - thats why the units are so heavy for the relatively small size. Thats also why they are not repairable, as noted in an earlier post.

I am fortunate enough to have 2 dyna 2000s, one is running my ignition, one is a spare cable-tied underneath the seat by the rear brake light as a working replacement. Until I'm convinced that all is good I'm not riding without the spare unit at hand. Very Happy

I like that idea .... i think i'll invest in a spare and mount it on the bike somewhere even though mine has been pretty much trouble free ,but after reading about all these failures i feel like i'm about to be Jinxed over here Laughing

I have 2 Dyna's and have not had any problems for the past 14 months. Both are mounted over the tailight, like Bluesmans. 6,000+ miles on one and 2,000+ miles on the other.

After finding and installing 4 different advance units on the end of the crank, I finally found one that was not broken. Now my bike is running well on the stock CB1100/900/750F ignition parts.
Fuck, I hate broken expensive parts.

Glad you're up and running again Ray. I never did find those damn ignitors. Now it's me that's down, not my bike, it's my back, I can hardly walk. It'll clear up soon.

You guys should drive a 1000 miles to have a Dyna unit fail and not be able to race.

The old MC1 unit was only an amplifier and would work with any 12 volt sender, even points. The Dyna main problem is it is designed with lower voltage components,at least as far as as I understand

I used Dyna to gain power over stock and it did but also failed. Got tired of Dyna excuses and put on an MSD and never failed another. You can power the old MC1 with anything and the stock senders work fine.

The new MSD takes a unit that looks like a Dyna "S" but according to instuctions will not fire coils directly,ie the current capabilty is not high enough.

The only thing I can say for sure is the power of these bikes is directly related to the quality/power of the ignition system. This was true 20 yrs ago and still true today. The old stock ignitors and old MC1 might be barbaric but does work.

I tested my rev limiter today on the replacement unit. It does work. The other day when I wasn't sure if it was working was because as I said I shift at 9000 and thought I had set the limiter at 9000. I did go over and thought the limiter should have kicked in. Well it was set at 9500. Today I dropped it down to 8500 and tested it a couple of times and each time it worked.
Ray, you mentioned that your's was hot hot when it failed. There have been a couple of occasions where there was an unusual amount of heat right under the seat or between my thighs. (Holy crap, I just typed tights instead of thighs. Thinking tight thighs against tank. OK, let's move on.) The next time I notice it I'll have to check the module.

No not yet Gary but as soon as I do I will post the results.
I have a bone stock ignition in my blue bike and need a module for the red bike to run unless I put the stock ignition back on but that is a HiPer motor in there and I think it needs a HiPer ignition.

Ray, have you heard back from Dyna yet? I sent my system to them 2 weeks ago with a note asking to please let me know what they find wrong with it. I called them this afternoon and they tell me a new unit has been sent. When I asked what was wrong with my old one, they don't know, the 2000 has been extremely reliable. I will give kudos to Dyna, when I receive mine, for not jerking me around about replacing it but with no explanation for the failure coupled with the number of failures I am seeing from this board I think my new system from Dyna will be for sale when it gets here..... Bummer.

I finally got my Dyna modules {2 of them} and 1 set of P/U coils back from Dyna today and went to the garage to fire up my red bike and the damn battery was dead.
I am going to charge the battery at the shop tomorrow and also buy myself 5 more gallons of race gas. She is back on the road as of tomorrow. It is too hot today to go outside.

Gee,
What I get from this thread is that the Dyna's junk. It makes no difference how good they are, the bottom line is if it fails as often as you guys are stating, then they are junk and completely useless. I will would rather go to points rather than have such unreliable stuff on my bike.

I hear many good responses regarding MSD... how about Accel or are they out of business too?

Seems to me the award should be given to you if you get there with out either of your Dynas taking a shit on you!!

Truthfully, I wish you the best and of course a safe journey!

I'm still reluctant to take mine further than 25 miles from home and always make sure the cell phone has a full charge!!

Just the sort of confidence I have in Dyna anymore. Come to think of it, and I sorta hate to say this, but a number of things I have purchased lately, that were made in the good ol' USA, have failed me miseriablily!!

I will let you take my extra Dyna module with you too if you want Lee? I would like to have faith in the equipment but I don't and I would feel guilty if you got stuck out in the middle of the 120 degree desert which you will be riding thru. Twisted Evil

... we could have an award for the most money spent on dynas for a single trip

... or most dynas fried on a single leg of a trip

... or most miles on one dyna before all the spark runs out

...last one with a working dyna wins Laughing

I sent them two modules and one pair of crank triggers and they sent me back one new module and my old triggers and module saying they tested fine, we will see.
Today I am going to the shop with the red bike and change the starter motor for one thing and I will see about raising the idle a bit too.
Lee, you aint had a problem with your Dyna module and you won't either. Have a great time and tell them all I said hello when you see them. Wink
Oh yeah, I got that 5 gallons of 111 octane rocket fuel yesterday and that stuff smells like power.

I found a MSD MC-1 ignition and installed it on my bike. I put 600mi on the bike this weekend, probably 400mi above 4500rpm's. The MSD ran great. I will be listing my Dyna 2000 complete in the 'For Sale' section later this week once I've taken some pics.

Post pics of how you mounted that big box up !

I thought about using an MC-1 a long time ago when i 1st got my bike in '97...or '98 not quite sure but close to those years.
But the limited space on these F's turned me off even though i loved them Msd's on our Z1's.

Ray,
Be pissed,..that's fine. But demand satisfaction. Send the unit back and find out what the F%&k is going on with these things. Like it or not you are more then less the F bike front man for the Dyna 2000 delema. Matter of fact,..I'd keep send the things back C.O.D. until the fix is solid. Better yet, ride down there and let them install one on your bike, per the freakin' book,..and see what happens.

It is a sad state of affairs alright, but I think you're doing the right thing Ray. If you can prove to them what is going on, they ought to owe you a solid, and everybody else will benefit from a more reliable product too. I realize I'm preaching to the choir, but I'm singing along too. You need any help getting back and forth or whatever, I'm here, just down the street Wink

Hey... I'll call you about your schedule... Cool
