.....I'm sticking to it ........
Way back in 1980 I bought my first new bike... a Honda CB400T Hawk. I read all about it and was all juiced up to go drag some footpegs. The Kaw KZ550 was a contender too, but just a little more expensive, plus the Honda dealer basically did a better job sucking me in and making the sell.
Well, that bike was fun but it just didn't have enough power. I kept it 6 months and traded it in on a nice shiny 81 CB750F!!
I must have read Motorcyclist, Cycle World, Cycle Guide and Cycle articles on the CB750F, the KZ750E, the GS750 and the Yamaha XJ750 about twenty times, carefully weighing out the good, the bad and the ugly points about each bike.
The F was the bike !! Just sitting still in the garage I would have been happy with it. Although the KZ was a slightly better all around performer, and fit me much better, the Honda just was a couple notches up in the quality and style dept. The Suzuki absolutely bored me to tears, and Yamaha .......well, who knows what they were thinking ?? (do they drug test at Yamaha?)
Anyway, so I plopped my cash down for the F and rode happily into the sunset. After break in, the first time I cracked the throttle open, I thought I was going to die. This bike was soooo FREAKIN fast !!! It really did scare me and I thought I WAS going to end up killing myself with all that power (this is rather funny to think about now).
Another thing with the F was, it was so darn top heavy. I am only 5'7" and had to kind of tip toe the bike around at stops. Even so, I absolutely loved the bike, until I saw the new GPz550s come out .... suddenly, I knew what I had to do.
A few years later I got a screaming deal on a 81 900F. That bike was such a blast because I became a very good rider on the GPz550 Kaw and was finally ready for something fast!! The 900 was even cooler looking than the 750 and although heavier, it was a bit better in several ways. I love tearing down the back roads and getting crazy in those skinny little tires. got to the point where I could exit corners hang the back end out a bit dirt track style.
Problems with the F bikes? ...... the 750F felt like it had a hinge in the middle on bumpy corners, but the 900F was rock steady. I guess they stiffened the frame up in the right places. ..... that and the 750 had the shifting problem that I fixed thanks to an article in Motorcyclist..... other than that, they were great.
So much for the good ol days !!!
I recently purchased a low mile 900F and all these old Honda memories are coming back...... thought I would share them here.
Great website !!!
Here is a pic of my new 900F
Here is a goofy action shot of my original 81 (note the 1100F in the background)
...and finally the good ol 81 750F
They are still one of the coolest bikes that ever rolled out of Japan !! |

The shot of the 81 is awesome - and as you pointed out in your email, there appears to be a red 1100F exiting the shot - way cool .
With that kind of history with these bikes, why are you selling the 900? |

I am reconsidering. I may keep it for a while. With only 193 mile though, I kind of hate to put miles on it...... it was a weird find. |

One thing that I envy you is that you have a new 900F that you could take care of it right from the beginning. |

No they are a little discolored. My 750 turned yellow/bronze and my other 900 turned purplish. |

I wasn't serious....sorry if it sounded like I was...
just keep it and keep it in nice shape... you will enjoy it for many years. Unless you are hurting for money don't sell it.... |

900 supersport, did you grow up in Phoenix, my best friend started with a CB400T Hawk then had a brand spanking new black 750 F when they first came out. Man was I jealous of that F. Infact when I saw a 900F advertised locally 3 years ago, I bought it just because I lusted that 750 soooooo much. I've lost track of him and your story brought back lots of great memories. |

No, I did most of my riding around Dallas, Tx. I lived there 80-92
That Hawk actually was a fun little bike.... I have no regrets other than they bumped it up to a 450 Hawk, lowered the price and styled it more like the F bikes a year later |

You own a KRR too. That's the only Yamaha I have ever wanted. Almost bought one, a leftover in a crate in like 1994. The dealership wanted crazy money for it and I walked away. |

I've told my buddy with a 68 SHelby
If you're not going to enjoy it and let other people enjoy seeing it out, then just take a picture of it so you know what it looked like and then get rid of it. If your just looking at it then you get the same thing from a picture.
Bikes, cars, boats, planes... they're made to run and it just breaks their spirit to sit. If your not enjoying them by using them then you don't understand their true appeal......
So... Yes I'm jealous of your 900 and I hope you enjoy the hell out of if it!
Where in Ohio are you? My brother lives there and is an HD guy that really needs to be buzzed with some classy Honda iron.
Welcome to the forum man! |

thanks...... I know, I should just ride it and enjoy it for what it is.
I'm around Akron. This place is really heavy with the loud pipes Harley crowd and to a lesser extent, the sport bike wheelie crazy lunetics.
.....not much in between I bet the 900F would be a big head turner around here |
