Backstory: Bought my first street bike stock 7 years ago, besides it having a big bore 985. It was not treated nicely, but the price was right. Learned how to rebuild it, mod it, using all the upgrade parts, tensioners, guides, F2 front end, rear f2 wheel, etc. etc. Learned how to lap valves, set valve guides, sync carbs. Many failures and stressful times, but was an amazing feeling when it was finally running. Then finally took the trek from Cleveland to NY for the spring ride and met a bunch of you guys. That was an amazing trip.

2 years ago the cam chain busted so the bike has been down for 2 years. Life stuff, buying a house, and also the dread of having to take this motor out again.

Recently I started to tackle it again and fix issues that I never messed with, a sheered engine mount, which I didn't do, on the lower case and some grooves on the inside damaged from the snapped chain. Met with a local repair guy and in agreement, it would cost more to fabricate the weld then to get a lower crankcase half.

I know it's a silly question to ask on the forum, but how much more money am I willing to dump into this thing? I'm tired of not being able to ride since it's my only bike.

This is mostly a venting post that I needed to get out of my head. Just a bit defeated and unsure of my next steps.

Hope all of you are well and are out there enjoying the season.

well your not going to just replace the lower crankcase half

as far as how much money your willing to spend on it, only you can determine that, motorcycles rarely are a good return on investment

You can't replace just half a case, they are machined together as a set. You need to keep both halves together as a set. So you'd need to replace your top and bottom cases with both from a different motor.

Welding on the cases is best left to experts. It's easy to warp them up if the heat isn't handled appropriately.

High performance motorcycles are not generally known as being cheap form of transportation, and old ones can get even more expensive to fix and keep running.

Jim Sawtell has some used motors that run. I would check with him, bite the bullet and fix it that way. Ask on this forum also. There are members with used engines and / or cases they are willing to sell.

Your grin would be wider if you replaced it with an 1100f engine. Very Happy

I happen to have one sitting here (upstate NY) that came with an 1100f I bought and it was supposedly checked out by a forum member. Bring your bike and we stick it in, only buy it if you like how it runs.

PM me if that is something you might be interested in.

HOW can you resist THAT OFFER????

Someone is not only offering you a Drive BEFORE you buy but is also willing to help with the labor of doing a motor switch.

NO HESITATION--DO IT!!!!!!!!!

That does sound like an amazing offer, but when I have already purchased all the gaskets, and parts to put a 985f back together, not having a trailer to cart my frame, extra vacation time I'll need to plan, and 100's of dollars in gas getting there, and a price yet unknown for the engine, I just can't go that route at the moment. I will look into it further though. It's a solid option.

Some bikes we keep, because it's never worth the value to sell. Others, never have a price.

I have a 900F on a floor dolly that needs valve shims and a starter clutch - if memory serves. Central Wisconsin. ...also a CB900C on a dolly.
