Looking to put up new/more lights in my garage. Thinking 8' strip lights from the local home center. In the past always went florescent but with them being phased out was hoping something new in LED. Anyone have any recommendations?

I used more 4' lights strategically located. Florescent with T5 tubes and one led 4'. I like the led as it gives a lot of light but it's only a single tube

They're pretty good.

I converted my 4-foot fixtures using LED tubes from 1000bulbs.com

LED for sure, I currently have 8 x 100w equivelent CFL daylight bulbs in the shop but recently installed 2 x 4ft 3000 lumem LED shop lights..Wow , what a difference. The area i have them is so much brighter than the rest of the shop....go for it .. you won't look back.

I had 8 100 watt bulbs in my shop. It is 1000 sq ft. I bought 300 watt CFLs. They draw 65 watts each and kick out 3900 lumens each. That made a huge difference. Just screwed them in. I have a 10 ft ceiling and these lights are long..9.5 inches, so may not be good for a lower ceiling. The costco lights look like a good deal because they are plug and play. I may get one of those for my workbench area. 16 bucks each at Lowes or Menards. I mix bright white and off white colors

If you don't want to hang light fixtures, and you already have standard bulb sockets on the ceiling, try these:

http://dlclights.com/40w-led-standard-e26-base-with-free-e39-base-converter-commercial-retrofit-light-bulb-4500-lumens-5000k-daylight-125w-hid-mh-replacement-ac100-277v/

You can pick them up at walmart.com shipped to your house for around $27 a piece. They aren't pretty, but man are they bright. I have a 3.5 car garage with 10' ceilings. 3 of these things make it like daylight in there.

White and bright.

I may try a couple of those. It says the base gets hot? Have you noticed that at all? 4500 lumens at 40w is very good!

No heat all. You can grab and hold the base while they are on. I checked

Ya know what? I put some of these with lower wattage in my front room fan. I'm amazed at the amount of light output.

Costco sells a double tube pack of 4' LED T8 tubes (if you already have the fixtures). They are $17 for a pair. I think they sell a 4 pack too. I have been replacing the lights in my shop with them. Much better than standard cool white T8's. You do not need a special LED fixture either as they work in a regular T8 fixture.

I do have a standard bulb socket in the center of the garage that I was going to convert to a plug box to hang fixtures. But this could be a good option. Then over benches I will surly go LED. Thank you all!

The only negative about the lights I mentioned are that they take about half a second to go on after you flip the switch. This slight delay is pretty common in LED's, but I thought I would mention it.
