Hey Guys,
Experimenting with some acrylic paint on my New exhaust, tell me what you think! Nevermind that it's messy (I'm still in the process of experimenting with the paint, how it might cure on the pipe, and how to be neater!)
That being said, any of you professional painters have any ideas as to the best way to go about doing this? I was looking for a kind of glossy / candy like finish
the brushes are really hard to control since the stamp wasn't particularly deep. So far the best luck I've had is to be messy, and scrape it off after drying with my fingernail and x-acto knife.
Thanks!

Hmmm... Cool idea. You should try the rattle can VHT high temp paint. Spray a bunch out into a little cup, then use to brush on. Then take rag or better yet a Qtip with some mineral spirits, lightly rub off excess paint. Since it's debossed shouldn't really be too bad to clean up.
Try to brush the paint from the center of each part to the edges. If you get a good enough amount of paint to start with, it should actually work it's way to the edges on its own. A little tapping vibration with your hand helps move the paint around too.
VHT makes a sweet anodized blue that would probably work great. Ohhhh... also this would best be done with the pipe off, logo facing up, so the paint won't drip down the can. Now that would be annoyingly messy.

If I were trying to do this, I would start with a clean pipe and spray paint the area of the embossed logo , and then when dry wrap a piece of fine sandpaper ( 600 grit ? ) on a block of wood and sand the high parts off. Just make sure you go around the pipe, not the length of it .IMHO |

If the logo is the same depth as the one on a NOS VF1000F SuperTrapp that I have, then it's a simple powder coat job. I'd carefully clean out the depressions, but not blast them. Then I'd mask off the bulk of the can, shoot the letters, then wipe off the excess around the edges with a damp fingertip. I use this method all the time with great success. Here are a few examples:
Seb - if you bring the muffler over some Saturday morning, I'll do it for free if I have the color you want. How's this?
Otherwise, you buy the powder and my labor is free. |
