Everyone shared in my success so let's be real world and share my failure also. Remember how I said this red paint / dye was unforgiving, well I got the dreaded run. Crying or Very sad In order to fix it's back to the primer. I used thinner to remove the bases and tomorrow I will wet sand again.

But on a better note here is the bike with the new seat. Smile

It's not a failure. It's part of the journey. We've all learnt a considerable amount following your project, and this is just another case study. Don't be so harsh on yourself. That's a killer bike you have there.

+1 Ian. Bamaf, never a failure - you have done one fine fine job there - and taught us plenty.

Bama, your "failure" is not getting the tank perfect on your first attempt (almost everything else you did in this project came out perfect the first try). Being a perfectionist, and very skilled, you're fixing it the right way rather than trying to hide or camouflage the run in the paint. I still don't have any doubt that the finished product will be well worthy of your efforts. It's stunning even as it sits.! beerchug We just have to be a little more patient to see the final results.

Really it's just all the prep work that was done and at least a part that has to be redone. Not once did I think of trying to get by with out taking it back down to the primer. I just walked away for a couple of days. The good thing is I can ride with the crap tank untill I finish painting the other. Smile The bad thing is I KNEW better than to spray the tank with all of it's curves using this dye and a smaller fan setting. Embarassed

Joe,
I don't think you need NOS parts considering the job you do on old ones. Your paint work is better than the factory.

Hi Bamaf

I see that you powder coated your engine incl fins, head etc. How has this held up, does it not become sticky when the engine warms up? I am thinking of doing the same but am concerned that the PC will melt. My local powder coater reckons they bake at 180oC (about 380oF).

Just use a high temp powder for the top-end and you will be fine. The head and cylinder are the only parts that get hot enough to matter. My valve cover is std temp clear and does not get soft nor does any of the bottom-end parts which are also std temp powder.

If I had gone with the oem red it would have been much eaiser but I think the finished product will be worth the effort. Now if I can just do the white, clear, decals and clear without any more "brain farts". Rolling Eyes
Rick did you pick up the 1100 project that was close to you?

No, I missed out. I was out of the house that day, and when Phil (Wamkap 1100) called me I called the guy right away, but he was already waiting for a Paypal money exchange from someone down to the south of Abq. Presumably, he got his money, because he didn't return my follow up phone call. It would have been almost as extensive as your project, but since you're almost done with yours, I was going to ask you to do mine next! LOL!

The "Secret Saving Acct" is growing nicely, now that Soccer Season is here, and the Minister of Finance has endorsed my plan to devote refereeing money to the 1100, so hopefully, it won't be too much longer, and I'll be able to add an 11 to the Stable...

Keep up the great job, still waiting patiently to see the finished version, you are the man!

Ian I think the wife's smile means she has some projects for me and now I have no excuse! Rolling Eyes
Andy this tri-color was a challenge and I learned a few things in the process, like "you know solid black sure would look nice". Laughing Laughing
I will put on the petcock, cap and lock this weekend and take some good photos outside. Looks a bit better than when I started but there are still a few items that I hope to find in better condition than what I have. Projects are never done are they, just moved to another level. Very Happy

Nice sunset BTW.

Wow That's just amazing. This whole project, I would have said, could never turn out this nice.

It looks like it's just off the showroom floor.
