That's insane.
Everyone is driving on the wrong side of the road. No wonder sfhess thinks it shows a death wish.

I thought that was pretty normal, no point in having a bike and sitting stuck in traffic

I was expecting a night rideresque blast around the Paris ring roads, much disappointment.

Not only is that normal in NSW, it’s legal! (Except the breakdown lane part).

Normally I don't either. I usually split between the two left lanes. This was a little different because I was on the on ramp and it was a safer move.

How much of what you were doing is legal in CA? Here, lane splitting is illegal, as is riding in the breakdown lane on a highway. Had you been here in MA, that cop you passed would certainly have pulled you over. And apart from legality, how do other drivers take it? I saw one or two make room for you, and one or two others crowd you. Again, here, someone might well have thrown open their door just for shits and giggles and to get you into their laps.

I would take the risks only if the weather was really hot, and the bike was overheating, though those facts probably wouldn't save me a ticket.

More power to ya!

I very rarely see anyone crowd me intentionally, more like they are not caring. Quite a few do move over. The shoulder move is indeed illegal, but if a cop had been right there and witnessed it it would be a crapshoot to get pulled over. It would be a warning anyway. Lane splitting is completely legal within reason, speed and room are considered. The CHP put out a bulletin advising how to do it and reduce risk.

California Highway Patrol website states the following...

Lane splitting by motorcyclists is legal in California.

Intentionally blocking or impeding a motorcyclist in a way that could cause harm to the rider is illegal.

Opening a vehicle door to impede a motorcyclist is illegal.

Drivers in the far left lane should move to the left of their lane to give motorcyclists ample room to pass.

Travel at a speed that is no more than 10 MPH faster than other traffic – danger increases at higher speed differentials.
It is not advisable to lane split when traffic flow is at 30 mph or faster – danger increases as overall speed increases.
Typically, it is more desirable to split between the #1 and #2 lanes than between other lanes.
Consider the total environment in which you are splitting, including the width of the lanes, size of surrounding vehicles, as well as roadway, weather, and lighting conditions.
Be alert and anticipate possible movements by other road users.

If the speed of traffic is variable and there are slowdowns, lane splitting will keep you from getting rear ended.

+1

Helps at stop lights too. Friend died waiting at the back of a line of stopped cars, mowed down by an old woman not paying attention driving a high end Mercedes. If he'd only split the lanes and gone forward to the front of the pack, he'd undoubtedly still be alive.
