I did an oil change and installed the new oil filter cover I got from Tom K. at the Spring Ride. I bought a new bolt for it too.

Was getting ready to finish up Cookie, a Canadian 1100f rescue and decided the beautiful finish on the outside of the tank was not matched by there crappy liner that some PO had done. Luckily I had a red tank that was just as nice on the outside but had some surface rust on the inside. I ended up rigging a tank cleaner using a pump and a brewery spray nozzle to scrub the recesses of the tank. Started with this:
Image

Setup looks like this, tank was set over a container to allow it to drain and be recirculated by the pump. The rust remover was a product called Rust Release which I confirmed did not harm the paint:
Image

And the results, hopefully it will stay nice and clean for a long time.

Nice. Are you up to doing another and making your new tool make you some money? I have a nice tank that needs this same treatment.
Let me know.

Peace, Jim

My molasses gunk works perfectly also, without harming the paint. The key from this point on is to be totally anal about keeping the tank full of gas (the real gas, not the ethanol infused CTDY crap they try to sell us now).

My 900(985) tank still looks perfect on the inside (outside too!!!).

Steve

The tank when I got the bike:

The (my opinion) Holy Grail of gas tank rust removal gunk:

And after the sweet juice worked it's magic:

The tank still looks just as clean (because I keep it full of ethanol free gas) today!

Both methods seem to work really well. I'm finishing up rust removal from my '86 VFR750F tank using electrolysis. I've flushed the tank 3 times and clean the sacrificial anode each time. I can't believe how much rust it picked up after the fourth time I pulled it out:

Image

Tonight it will get the final flush and then a good cleaning to remove the thin layer of black slime that gets left behind.

I agree that keeping the tank full of gas is important, although we don't have ethanol-free gas anywhere close by. Sad

Recently I bought a couple 1100’s. One was a forum members from WA but not sure who he is because I got it from someone else.
It was the nicer of the two but it was in a bad crash and broke the case around he stator cover. I bolted on another stator, installed a different throttle assembly (the stock one was broke to hell from the crash), installed a new battery and put some gas in it. Then I drained the oil and pulled the oil pan. There wasn’t any big nasty stuff in the pan so I installed a Headless oil screen and bolted the pan back on. Fresh oil and filter and it was time.

She fired right up and runs like a top. Installed a 900 headlight assembly and clocks. Then put a fender and tail light assembly on it. Now it was time to go test ride. Had a blast and am off to get it titled and plated today. First I have ridden since I crashed in 15 and will go do a track day with Melchiro next month. I can’t wait. Of course I’m going to mod the shit out of it.

The best part is. I paid $600.00, then sold the lattice rearsets and the primo side covers and the owners manual. Now I’m into the bike for $50.00 and still have the carbs, forks, wheels, Kerker pipe and the swing arm left to sell. Got to love a bike that is making me money and I get to keep it and ride it.

Have a great Monday, Jim

Got the nerve up to apply some decals to a 2nd set of body work I have. 1st I tried the drop of water and soap method. OMG, way too many air bubbles. So I tried the next piece with original Windex and the results were outstanding, zero bubbles.

I installed my new Hindle yesterday. It's nicely engineered and easy to install. Without a doubt, it's the best deal out there for a new SS performance exhaust, and it sounds awesome!

I can now consider this bike completed. Smile

I take that back.

The bike will have to be totally disassembled and restored again. I predicted to myself that at least one smartass would point out the rusty nut on my upper frame mount. That was done through email earlier this morning. Chico wins the prize and will get that rusty nut once I've completed a full restoration. Cool

Lol, It's so obvious now that the rest of the bike is in like-new condition. That one nut really pops out! I'm surprised you didn't have more feedback about it.

What ratio of molasses to water do you use ? How long does the process take ? Is there any thing to look for in the contents of the molasses ? Brand ??

Installed my Chris Lee Design exhaust system tonight, went on without trouble and looks great, just need to make a hanger since it doesn't work with my rearsets.

G'day Sillygoose.
Is that an Aussie model in the US? Front end, wheels and rear grab rail give it away. Love the rear sets. What make? A rod from the top shock bolt will do.
Cheers

Different people use different ratios. 50/50, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80, it really doesn't matter. My feeling is just get the consistency to something easily pourable. The process does take a while (weeks). AFAIK any molasses will work. The "feed" molasses from a farm store (which is what I use) is WAY cheaper than the grocery store.

The molasses does not harm paint, but it WILL eat aluminum, so remove the petcock and plug with a rubber stopper.

Steve

Rearsets are from Over Racing, purchased used on Yahoo Japan.

Canada also got the same 1100f as you did but this bike is a mongrel. It is a US bike that a PO put the gold boomies and 1000C headlight/meters on, I just added clipons, Mickey Mouse meters, and grab bar tail cowl to complete the look. I call them my Canadian girls since the other two are real Canadian 1100f.

Image

Funny you mention the mount from the shock, it is one of the options. I have this one that is meant for an upswept exhaust so is too short but offered to help me out with a stay so we will see what comes up with. In the meantime, I have some Al stock to fashion a rudimentary stay.

Good one Sillygoose. The rear exhaust mount needs to be able to stop rearward movement. I had the can come lose and drop off the pipe and pole vault the rear wheel 2" high at 80mph.
Wonder why AU and CA got the good looking ones?
Cheers

Just use a rubber band attached to the swing arm. That will allow the swinger to move. Laughing

What would we do without your wisdom and insight? Plus my sister will miss you greatly, she already is worried your production is not what it used to be.

Anyhow, not having a suitable rubber band but with access to a grinder, vise, and drill I made this work of art until I can get something prettier to hold it together.
