Hello,

New to the forum and new to bike building so I'm excited!

I had a search but couldn't find the answer I'm after. Noob question alert:

I've been scrubbing the engine of my newly acquired 1979 CB750k for 3 days now with less than satisfactory results so I'm leaning towards getting it soda/media blasted, especially after seeing so many photos of great looking engines.

I've never dismantled an engine before so I'm looking for insight into how big a task it is to take it apart to be treated.
Will I have to completely dismantle the engine including camshaft, pistons, valves etc or can it be done keeping 'sections' together?

Time isn't really an issue but I'm concerned about opening a can of worms and creating problems for myself, bearing in mind my lack of experience and the fact that the engine was running.

On the other hand it could be a learning curve and a chance to service the engine.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Hello, you have to make choice if you want to clean and paint the engine or also take it apart for servicework.
I would say if the engine is running okay and compression is okay, chains etc okay why would you take it apart?
Anyway it`s not a big deal to take the engine out of the frame for blasting with soda or dry ice.
Imediately after preperation you can paint it with the proper paint.
Cheers,
Wim

Thanks. I wasn't sure how much of a risk it would be to blast and paint the engine while it is fully assembled.
I've also read about mixed reviews about soda blasting so I'm tempted to go the whole hog and bead/sandblast it.

Have a look at the results from vapor blasting that Nils offers.

Probably someone in your area offering the service.

I blocked off the intake and exhaust openings on my son's 1100F engine and soda blasted it while it was completely intact. If you do some degreasing first and then take your time, you'll be surprised at how clean it will come out just by soda blasting. I wouldn't sand or bead blast an assembled engine and even apart is risky for media getting left behind. After soda blasting, pressure wash it with full strength purple power (or something similar) and an engine cleaning gun like this: https://www.harborfreight.com/engine-cleaning-gun-68290.html. Rinse off, blow dry with compressed air and let it sit for a couple of days. If you can put it on an engine stand like many of us have, you'll be able to paint the entire thing top to bottom. A good two part high temp ceramic paint will give you good results. There are numerous other great high temp paints out there, such as VHT.

I have used purple power, a stiff bristle brush and a pressure washer to prep an assembled engine for paint. Plug the inlet and exhaust first of course. Then I took off the various covers (clutch, alt, starter, cam etc) and refinished them speratly. The end result was pretty sweet without needing to strip the motor.

Yup I used balled up rags then covered over in plastic and zip tied on. Need to keep out the pressure washer.

Do you mean that was blasted fully assembled or fully stripped down?
