Did the engine builder have a shop cat? When I had one (I miss that cat badly) there was cat hair everywhere. I had to be very careful when building engines.

I hope that's not fibers out of an oil filter.

G'day Scotty,

Given you had the engine built by another fellow, it would be worth asking him what type of shop rags he used, or comparing your gluggy hair balls to the type of rag he used.

When I did mine back in 2008/9, I thought I was scrupulously clean during my engine build. But on the first oil change when, like you, I also dropped the pan, I was amazed to see how much 'fluff' and detritus had turned up down there. And yes, we had a cat helping in the build too and his signature fur was in there too.

I think just clean it up, and then ride it like you stole it (and be happy you had the nouse to pull the pan and catch it before it caused any problems and that the screen was clearly doing its job)

God knows you well truly deserve it after all your trials and tribulations with this ride. BTW, how's yer starter motor blues?

Cheers...Tony

Yeah mate. 2 cats and he feeds them in the garage where he built my engine. I'll quiz him on it next time I see him.

I changed the oil filter and it looked to be OK. I put the oil filter in the engine only 200km ago and I used K&N which I have always bought from the same bike shop.

Maybe I'll pull the sump off in say 1000km from now to check again.

Who did the R6 starter clutch, and was an authentic Yamaha unit used or a Taiwan replacement?

Rexe bought the cheaper version from eBay, read his comment on page 3.

http://www.cb1100f.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=71638&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=starter&start=60

For what it's worth mine has 15,000 kms on it now and still starting fine. It was a second hand unit with unknown kilometres but it was an oem part which makes all the difference it seems.

I'm guessing that the centering is very critical to longevity, as well as part quality.

Turning the hub like Cary does undoubtedly helps too.

The failures that I have seen seem to be related to ones from Taiwan ....none that are genuine Yamaha pieces.

Absolutely, I've sold about 250 units using the Taiwanese part and have only 3 failures. If the proper diameter is too large and the surface is already worn out then you'll have more failures. Also, having a bevel on the hub allows for an easy installation that could otherwise damage the sprag.

Scott, make sure find all 20 dogs and it looks like the ring sheared and there are another 20 rectangular fragments to locate.

I've not counted all the parts yet, but I also haven't thrown anything out.

I will get the pieces together and count them for piece of mind.

Cheers
