Ok will post updates going forward...
Firstly though I should point out that this restoration has been supported directly and indirectly through the forum, particularly by bizzcb1100F and sillygoose who facilitated supply of parts for the RC and one for a Eurospec F that is also under restoration. Thanks must go to other members have sourced parts stateside for me.
So I have four restorations going on the moment, 2 RC's 1 eurospec 1100F and 79 CBX very rare in Black which was one of a few produced late 79 before the 80A was launched.
This one is the first one under restoration which is a light restoration as the bike was in good original condition with 46000 kms and completely original save the exhausts. Work undertaken to date is a complete nut and bolt strip down, inspection of all mechanical components to ensure they meet factory specification, source parts where required. Frame tank, fairing and mudguards have all been painted to a very high standard and seat re-trimmed - so the rebuild now commences.
Finally I should point out that this bike is too good for a concourse restoration, it will be left with as it should be in my personal opinion a 35 year patina on all fixtures as none are corroded. Again in my personal view concourse restorations should be left to bikes that require renewing/plating of fixtures and fittings.
Keep watching for updates as they will be coming thick and fast.. |

I think my F was in a similar condition, maybe less corrosion, was missing a few parts but thanks to this forum I have sourced most of them.
Today the project progressed at a good pace only to be held up as it was found that a marked "2" tolerance conrod was found to be out of spec. by some margin and "locked" when tightening on to its respective journal. This is extremely unusual especially for Honda, but after 3 hours of fettling I have decided to borrow the machine shops honing machine on Monday and relieve 1.5 thou to bring it back in spec. to the purchased bearing.. it was going so well. Apologies pictures are in reverse order.
Back to household chores tomorrow.. time to fix the swimming pool leak... |

So the 4 bikes are progressing but now focusing on the first RC (number 1316 of 1500) which will remain in my collection. The other CB1100F and RC wil follow on closely behind followed by the 79 CBX. All bikes will be nut and bolt restorations back to factory specifications using original parts where possible. Progress will be rapid in the next couple of weeks..
If you have not seen this video on youtube I suggest you start at part 12 and follow through or just be gratuitous and start on part 14.. through to 16 ..Wayne Gardner in the six hour 1982 on a CB1100R... its amazing stuff.. hairy chested big balls stuff.. on 530lb machines from a bygone age..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOyOCq6LGXM part 12
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyYZ2xbes6U part 14
Got the clipons finished today just need the rest of the bike.. |

Good day all,
Just thought I would provide an update, the project was delayed as I decided that the bike required a nut and bolt restoration. The paintwork undertaken was so good the rest of the bike would have been out of character without re-plating the zinc, I am however undertaking to try and not over restore the bike but try and maintain a factory finish.
All paintwork for all bodywork and tank finished just waiting for shipment of new rubber grommets direct from Japan to complete the rebuild of the frame and components.
Here are some photos of the restored parts or parts waiting restoration |

Afternoon from Southern Africa..
I have been busy chasing around and collecting outstanding items for the rebuild. Should be pulling it all together during the next couple of weeks.
The exhausts have been made from a pattern OEM set and include the balance pipe. The exhausts are hand made in stainless by an artisan who has been plying his trade in exhaust making for 40 years, the only issue is I cannot get black chrome undertaken in South Africa so it will have to be a ceramic coating yet to be defined, maybe even good quality ceramic VHT baked on.
If any one wants a set of these exhausts for either an F or RC they can be had for $650 + shipping - the package includes the 2 step brackets and 4 x collar please PM me if your interested.
BTW please let me know if you feel I am putting to many pictures up, but want to show as much detail as possible. |

Please keep posting the pics and the updates from your resto.
The lack of responses doesn't mean people aren't following along.
Some lovely looking hardware in the back of the van. |

Thanks smurdoch just need to know people are looking and interested. Just do not want to go over the top with pictures...
Anyone watching please feel free to critique the build as I want to get to near perfection to a stock build as it came out of Japan - on this bike in particular, without critique that cannot be achieved.
I am very lucky where I live in SA, it is full of old school engineering capabilities and plating shops that are fast disappearing elsewhere in the world due to CNC and environmental considerations on the plating side. Wish I had as easy access to these capabilities back in the UK - the cost is 60% less here and a lot of the time free |

Your bike is coming out absolutely spectacular. Post as many pictures as you have since we love bike porn. And I love that custom-made SS exhaust.
I'd be reluctant to have it ceramic coated for two reasons: one, you can't get a gloss black finish and two, it has a limited lifetime. An honest ceramic coating shop will tell you that the finish in the header pipes will probably only last a few years. You might be better off to go with a gloss high temp paint.
Keep the pictures coming!

Hi Tom,
Many thanks for the feedback, as stated I am striving for perfection and want to share my journey with like minded people. I am so fortunate to work with great people in South Africa who go unnoticed around the rest of the world. Life is tough here whether you are black or white, so seeing the passion coming out in my bike through the artisans who I work with is testament to their skills.
Thanks for the feedback on the coating on the exhausts I will proceed with VHT, actually the RC had matt exhausts, the RD and the F had a gloss finish. So if you see the bike with a matt black finish its how it came from the factory. I was told to spray a light covering of VHT and then ride the bike like you stole it.. problem is new rings and bearing wont like that so going to look for an oven circa 300F/150Centigrade and bake the finish before fitting.
If anyone else has experience please let us all know..
Cheers for now its getting late..
Cary |

Why coat them with anything? They look great as bare stainless. The paint will wear off just like ceramic and you'll have to respray. The ceramic headers on my bronco looked good for about 7 years but they are under the hood and not really exposed to the elements. They were coated inside and out and did run cooler. I would not paint a beautiful stainless exhaust. Your restorations look really nice. Good job! |

Most likely to look stock, if I had an R I would want it to be stock and the exhaust painted to match the factory.
However, if petrat did my resto R and it had sexy Italian wheels and an Ohlins suspension, then stainless would be my choice. |

I see sillygooses point but I would run them just as they are. What would shipping to USA be on the exhaust ( new York)? |

Thanks guys for the support.
Cary I have the rubbers for the RB RC and the RD
also CBX because they are like the RB.
If you are interested let me know can send pictures of them.
I have a mould for pressing the rubbers and many members have them.
Can also do the glueing if nessecary.
Regards,
Wim |

Cary, I meant to say how impressed I am with those custom-made exhausts. The local artisan that you know is incredibly talented and his price to make them is quite reasonable. Can you get some sort of idea on what shipping to the U.S. would be? I bet more than one of us would be interested in having a set made.
